Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Seti and the “meeting party” from the Huns at Turnacum meet, and talk, and they are watched by both sides- but Theoderic’s side is clearly the larger.

The Orc is very surprised that the Temple of Pluto has anything to say here.

”How does lives matter?”  the Orc says.  “Pluto!  Abyssal lord like ours, cast down, yet thinks he serves the decrepit Olympians!  He cares for lives?”

But as they speak, something else is evident.  Not all of the Humans here are thoroughly convinced that their service to the Huns is absolute.  Seti can see it in their eyes- guarding caravans, that’s one thing.  Breaking every custom of honor in warfare by using children as shields… that’s going too far.

Even their horses seem to dance a nervous dance beneath them, whickering and shifting their weight.

A sight which does not go unnoticed…

Theoderic did not send Seti up in secret.  This is a time for a show of power- the army is in full view of Turnacum, with his hundreds of horsemen front and center.  Theoderic leaves Melissa with Aelasuria for a moment, and takes a spot near the front with Titus on a gentle rise of land, where they can see what’s going on.

”Horses sense the discomfort of their riders,” Theoderic says quietly.  “They are sensitive to fear.  Those men Seti is talking to are bothered, and their horses know it.  Titus, from what Melissa told us, the Humans may break along this line- some deciding that whatever hold the Huns have over them, whatever they might gain or protect, it is not worth the price of turning to such evil as the Huns demand of them.  And some… well, some are already across the line.  Whether they simply have no sense of right or wrong, or are too far past the line to easily go back, some might stick with the Huns, no matter what Seti says or offers them.  This will be a risky moment.  I need you there in the middle of it, to be there when it happens.  Seti is wise and his demeanor is severe, but he is not the kind of person people will rally around in the moment that matters.  He is more the kind to send them running in fear or begging for forgiveness.”

He looks back for a moment, at Aelasuria.  “She is the kind they rally around, but I will not take such a risk in front of all those Orcs.. .they hate Elves.”

He leaves Titus with instructions to back up Seti, and be a focus for whichever Humans decide to break with the Huns at this point, and heads back for Aelasuria and Melissa.

* * * * * * *

Melissa has a vaguely smug, contented look, as if having Aelasuria a bit tongue tied pleases her.

”He’s coming back,” she says to Aelasuria. She has a brief smile.  “Well, of course I’ll have the decency not make my offer directly to him.  He’s probably not got that kind of thing on his mind right now, anyway.”

Theoderic arrives.

”Are there blackguards here?”  he asks.

”I don’t know,” Melissa says.  “Twenty six in total to support the Belgica war, but some, I have heard, are already dead.  And there’s me.  So where the others are… since this place is already taken by the Huns, there is no reason for them.  They would be out where they make a difference.  Unless there are priest killings going on.  Then they would be here too.”

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Titus nods when Theodoric gives him his orders, "Very well. I shall be ready to support Seti and those who bend our way."

When the King moves on, Titus nods to Gian, who rides behind him, and whistles to Felix as he moves to a place in the front of the line behind where the priest of Pluto is carrying out his negotiations. His gilded glinting armor help him stand out in a crowd, which is partly what Theodoric is thinking. He is no longer using the Shield of Burgundy, but his old red-painted shield with its gold-painted studs feels comfortable on his arm. This will be the first time, if it comes to it, that he's used his new sword and his hand rests on its hooked pommel. He looks calm at ease, but inside he is roiling nerves as most other are.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

She didn't like being left behind however she knows that being a elf would provoke the orcs beyond reason. For the sake of the children's lives she had to remain hidden from sight. That's why it was wiser to let Seti, Titus, and Theo handle things. Still she wanted to help in any way she can. She caresses Spica's neck looking worried. "Scolo Seti might feel he doesn't need your help. But you can still be there for him I think. Go to the front help in any way you can if you think there is need to persuade the human's to side with us. I think just by being there and seen it will help. One reason is that orcs respect power and your strength will be lent to the army's and Seti's words.  I hope that Seti can handle it and I think Titus will be able to help in his own way."

She wanted everyone there that could help. There was no reason to hold back especially since the orcs respected power. Something Theo's army, Seti's priestly power, and Scolo's wizardly might wouldn't be overlooked.

Blushing slightly at Melissa's words she was surprised wondering if Melissa thought to provoke. That or she was simply being honest and rather bold about what she wanted. She glances at Melissa noting the smuggness and shakes her head slightly feeling the woman had a way to go. "Perhaps you should talk with the clerics of Venus. They might help you to find the room in your heart for love. If there is one thing my mother taught me is that there is so much to learn. It's isn't easy to change ones way of thinking still... Open your eyes and take the time to actually get to know Theo. Don't prejudge him and assume he is like most of the men you have met before."

She listens to the latest conversation with Melissa then speaks softly. "It's wise to assume at least one is here. Then you can take that into account and should it be proven that no blackguard is here nothing is lost. I pray that the humans amoungst the hun army can be persuaded to turn against them on the matter of freeing the children. If they do the Huns will have little choice but to comply if they have any desire to live."

She walks gracefully away lightly touching scolo's arm for a moment to help him focus. Then let's him decide where he wanted to be. She walks with Spica careful to stay out of sight of the Huns. "It won't be long now Spica. The orcs will decide one way or another. We have to put our trust in, Seti, Theo and the others."

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

oh - Yes I think you have it .... look scary and go to the front ... hmmmm how does one look like a wizard?

Scolo's clothes change color and shape several times until he comes up with something that is all black with a stiff hat, his beard even straightens to a point as if oiled and his mustache curles and eyebrows flare making him look even taller and thiner than the tall thin man he is - he creates a mirror out of nothing and admires

oooh yes, thats it.

the bunny slippers are now little dragons with spiky tails going up his legs and wherever he walks he leaves a trail of light smoke.

he chuckles - and looks at his hands wich catch fire - The elf can tell after a minute that it is a fake trick fire, but it is the most realistic prestidigitation she has ever seen.

He smiles - Yes, this is my secret, my specialty.

One day - we can trade in spells, I won't hold you to a promise of assisting me.

The man in black with burning hands suddenly appears beside Theo.

Hello ...

Would you like me to go anywhere see or do anything special?

I could make appearances in different places around the perimeter ... or confuse a few people ... or turn a few into quivering mounds of flesh ...

He smiles at that last bit - and Edgar flies up to his shoulder completing the effect of an obvious wizard of some power and maybe a touch of evil.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Theoderic always had a problem with what wizards could or couldn’t do.  Magic was strange and unpredictable and he had never had the time to learn anything about it.  He knew though, that whatever he had learned, it wouldn’t matter with Scolo anyway.  Maybe out there were wizards who had learned things by the book- Scolo had probably ripped out all the pages, and made little butterflies out of the paper, and set them free.

“Is there any way to make our army look more impressive?  Not frightening.  There are people there I do not want to frighten.  But the stronger we look, the stronger Seti’s argument.   Take up a safe position with the troops if you can, and add some… some touch of magic that isn’t going to give people nightmares. “

* * * * * * *

Seti continues to talk to the group the Huns have sent forth.  No one can follow the conversation, but Seti is obviously being quiet dramatic.   Suddenly, one of the Human horsemen break away and rides back into the town.  It doesn’t look like the others wanted him to do that- they are calling after him.

Seti’s warnings are not making headway on the Orcs.  On the contrary, from their point of view, the very fact that Theoderic has sent someone up to negotiate tells them they are doing it right.  If they didn’t have their little hostages, Theoderic would just attack, but since he has his Human weaknesses….

But the Humans there are split.  Some will not cross this line.  Seti reminds them that they have moral responsibilities beyond what works in battle, and there are consequences and prices to pay, if not in this life than in the next.  Many Humans do believe this- and as a result, there is a divide starting, between those Humans who will obey the Hun orders to take hostages, and those who, despite all the Hun threats of retribution, will not.

* * * * * * * * *

Melissa's eyes are a little watery, talking to Aelasuria.  "It might be interesting," she says.  "Though I know some of those priestesses of Venus, and it's hard to have faith in them.  Even if I did... how can I be free to do that?  I told Scolo and Seti about the things I've done.  Not good things, Miss Elf.  I don't know what's going to happen to me.  But if there is something I can do for you and Theoderic, ask.  I mean that."

Theoderic comes back for Aelasuria.  "We have to be ready," he says.  "Something is happening.  I don't think we're getting out of this without a fight, no matter what Seti does.  But who is on whose side... that is going to be very complicated."

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

She couldn't help but smile looking at Scolo's transformation with approval. He definitely would make a impression now. A good one that would help to spell out how unwise it would be to provoke a battle by harming a child. " Very nicely done Scolo! Thank you Scolo I look forward to that and good luck."

She pauses listening to Melissa nodding slightly. "I understand Melissa. Not all representatives of the gods and goddesses do them justice. I think it's only a matter of time till you get a bit more freedom. Till then perhaps we can bring a priestess of Venus to you. For the moment I ask that you keep hope and be patient. I will talk with Theo and since Eadoin is one of your supporters I will try to involve him. When your first let out someone will have to be present to chaperone you most of the time. Be it Eadoin, Scolo or someone else. In time I think we will make progress towards true freedom for you."

Looking to Theo she nods slightly giving him a gentle hug. "I will do my best Theo. Oddly enough I find it Ironic that the way to fool the orcs might have been to make it look like you didn't care. If they thought you would attack regardless of prisoners they wouldn't bother taking them. If we approached them at speed they might have simply tried to run leaving the children behind. We could have chased them straight into the Centaurs as you originally had in mind. It's to late for that now though. We couldn't take the risk anyway. Now I think it's important that no orc leaves the battle field. Not one of them can report this tactics effectiveness."

Preparing for battle she casts Mage armor on herself saving her short lived defensive magic for when the battle actually starts. "Theo there is very little I can do. Most of my magic would endanger the children. I can still cast web, sleep, magic missile, silence on someone giving orders, and invisibility on someone perhaps a child that would give needed advantage at a crucial moment. After that..."

She drops her hand to the sword she hasn't used in a long time. Wizards were not meant to use a blade like a warrior but in some situations there was little choice. "Theo I could serve as a battle field distraction. If there is a place you want the orcs to charge I probably have to do little more then show myself and provoke them. I just might be able to get them to forget common sense in a effort to get to me. With Displacement and Mirror image up for a short time I would be a difficult target to hit."

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Impressive, but not scary ... Hmmm ponders Scolo as he stands before the King - yes well I've got something. He walks the line of troops from end to end and as he passes them starting with the king and his immediate supporters everyones armor is cleaned and polished to a beautiful shine that reflects all light. Those peasants serving in rags and leather armor find a fake shiny breastplate that reflects in the distance but from close up resembles the appearance of spray paint on the clothes.

When done Scolo looks at the army and in the distance medium side cavalry unit s ride off to the side hiding themselves in the distance and appearing to move into surrounding positions on either side of the city.

Prestidigitation for shiny and clean armor. Silent image for glimpses of hidden cavalry in the distance.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

There are lots of books about the art of illusions in the Academy or Aurelianorum.  Scolo made it a point not to read them.  Too full of other people's theories and accepted, unchallenged wisdom handed down by gray haired wizards over centuries.

But sometimes, the old gray wizards had a point other than the one on the top of the hat.  Had Scolo only known, he'd have appreciated that his current strategy is in full agreement with the classical teachings on Illusion and Expectation.

This theory holds that Magic is only half the input into any good illusion.  Unlike other spells, with Illusions, the "victim" contributes much of the actual energy to the magic, and this is done by Expectation.  Basically, the more the illusion matches what the observer expects to see, the more effective it is.  The most capable of wizards can pull of an effective illusion with absolutely no magic at all, merely be building and controlling expectations.

In this case, Theoderic had deliberately spread out his army to make it look impressive.  And Scolo amplified the effect with some magic.

There is commotion from inside the town.  The Huns have realized; their Human allies are weak and cannot be trusted.  Not all, at least.  Some still know which side is the one to be on.  The Orcs start grouping together, aned heading across the drawbridge on the east side of town.  Behind them, within the town, there is some noise and confusion, but the view is blocked.  Seti is closest but he cannot see.

But at the "meeting", the Orcs have gotten bored.  They break off and head back for the town, warning Seti, "You come after us, your kiddies die!"

* * * * * * *

Theoderic sees that Seti has done what he can do.  There seems to be a lot of confusion- the Orcs have left Seti, but one of the Humans is still with him.

Theoderic watches Aelausuria prepare for the battle with spells.

"The Centaurs have got them cut off," he says.  "They can't escape.  Hostages or not, we will not let them.  But I think the Orcs have pushed the Humans with them too far.. .or Seti has pushed them.. something is happening."

He turns to Melissa.  "I think I have a job for you."

"Anything you want, I will do," she says.

"When this is over, if we take prisoners, or if some of these men wish to join us, I want you to look at them, and tell me if you recognize any as blackguards."

"Let's join up with Seti," he says to Aelasuria.  "Even if you can't use your Lightning, there are still many things you can do!"

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

She pats Spica gently on the shoulder as she slips gracefully onto the unicorn's back. "It's time Spica let's do the best that we can." She appreciated what Scolo had done for them. With the army appearing to be far larger then it really was the Orcs minds would be on anything but fighting if they could help it. Perhaps they would consider surrendering once they were cornered. Violent or not how eager could they be to die?

She looks to Theo taking his hand for a moment as much to reassure herself as Theo. They had to save the children as the alternative was unthinkable. "I am ready Theo. I will trust in Eadoin and his people. To be honest they might be the best to swiftly ride in and snatch up the children. Though I have no idea how things will start once they are scene. It would be nice if we could use fog to blind the orcs but not ourselves."

She looks to Melissa smiling at her with a slight nod. "See you can help even now. Perhaps she should wear a veil or something so they don't recognize her."

Turning her attention back to Theo she looks towards where Seti is. "All right Theo." She rides towards Seti's position holding out hope that the day would end well. Even if things looked very grim indeed at the moment.

Seti speaks with the human and stands deliberately firm in the road. Bored or not, the Orcs should be certain of their fate. As he feared, they may intend to call his bluff, but still.... a fearless Orc would have already attacked. An idle mind lets fear do its work as one approaches the gallows.

He does not want Theodoric to incite them. If they intend to "run the blockade", let them do the running. Seti intends to reinforce their stance - immovable.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Seti's "meeting party" breaks up even as Titus arrives, and they Humans among them turn away, towards the town.  One of the two riders shouts back to the town:  "We've done what we said for these Huns!  We've guarded their caravan, but we won't make war against the gods themselves!"

Not everyone is convinced.  There is a shout back:  "The gods are dying, Maddus, the Huns are the new power!  Don't be a fool!"

The Orcs turn back too, growling at Seti as they go.

Theoderic rushes forward on his horse.  As he does so there is a shouted report, relayed along his line of troops.  "Orcs at the east gate!  They're leaving!  With children!"

The Orcs are running the blockade, it seems- and as Theoderic predicted, it is to the east, towards the Centaurs.

Theoderic looks back- Gellas is behind him, ready to maneuver the troops. "Not too fast!" Theoderic  shouts.  "Let them spread out, and we can pick them off with less chance of hitting the children!  Spread them out, and let them go into the Centaurs!"  Gellas relays orders and scores of horsemen wheel off and ride to the east.

Then he looks at Titus and Aelasuria.  "It's going to be a panic," he says.  "Some of the Human fighters are going to be confused, scared... and we've got to get in there and take control.  If only there were a quick and easy way of telling who's on who's side, now.  Let's get to the gate ahead!"

* * * * * * *
The area map of Turnacum.

The "meeting party" is north of the town, at the location marked 1.  Theoderic's troops are right and left of that place, stretched out in a line.    The "rear area", where Theoderic and Aelasuria have just left Melissa, would be to the north along the road.

The road the party is on enters through the town through a small gate, just as it crosses the defensive canal that rings the town.

The Centaurs are east of the town, in the direction of 2, but further, off map.

It is hard to see what is going on in the town from the outside, but there is commotion, in the area marked 3.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

The securing of a town, as Theoderic has been taught, has always been a matter of the gate.  Get inside with sufficient force, and the battle is won.  It's been that way since Odysseus and the Trojan Horse.  Just a matter of getting inside the gate.

Thus he sees the issue now as centering on that gate, on the north side of town:  for the moment, it is open, and their is chaos beyond as orders are shouted and then ignored, by Humans, and by Orcs.  Without that gate, he cannot intervene easily in the town.

So Theoderic charges forwards, directing those near him to follow him.  He chases the Hun "meeting party" all the way to the gate.  Orcs can surprisingly fast when there is a charging warhorse behind  them.   Of course, as any good Orc knows, you don't have to outrun the warhorse, just the slowest Orc.  Theoderic catches up to the slowest Orc near the gate.

He is at the location marked 1 on the map below.

Inside, there is chaos and confusion.  Orcs are fighting humans, dragging people from their home, Humans are fighting Humans in the street, in a messy brawl.

Seti's warnings, coupled with the Orcs finally putting many of their Human mercenaries "over the top", has led to a breakdown. Most of the Orcs are clearly headed out to the east gate, where Theoderic is confident his cavalry, and the Centaurs, will bottle them in.  Some are trying to regain control of the Human warriors, using threats, promises, insults, and brute force where necessary.

And a few of the Humans have clearly made their choice- this might be a momentary problem, to them, but in the long run the Huns hold all the cards, and the warnings of priests serving has-been gods do not.  One man in armor, on an armored horse, is telling his men that the Huns will allow them to take slaves and plundered treasure, every man who makes it home will be rich as lord!  Theoderic will not allow that, because he gives everything he gets to the Elves!

Meanwhile, with a sparkly "poof" Scolo and Melissa appear on a roof top, at the place marked 3, on the right side of the street.  The triangular enclosure is the town's Caravanserai, the place used my merchants to park trading caravans.  It is an open area surrounding by low buildings and sheds, and one small tavern on the north side.

There are dozens of supply wagons here, some of them still loaded!

But in the street just outside, she can see the fighting.  Melissa does not bother to ask "are you crazy?".  She knows.

"Oh this is good," she says.  "We're right in the middle of a riot.  I've seen these.  Orcs have a very... functional way of stopping them.  Worgs in the street usually did it, back home."

So far, there are no Worgs.

Titus recognized the significance of the gate as well as Theodoric and any other experienced warrior on the field. That there seemed to be a riot ongoing also suggested that despite their efforts the children the Orcs had gathered might be save just as a result of the ensuing chaos between Theodoric's charge and whatever else is going on within the town. Accordingly he two charges to the gate signally to Gian to follow and stay near and whistling a command to Felix.

As he charges he shouts, "Dei Volunt!" as a counter to the Human warrior who had shouted that the Gods are dying. The Gods Will it!

King Theoderic's army vastly outnumbers the Huns. They can not win this battle and they can not escape. Do not throw your lives away and condemn your souls to the Abyss."

Seeing a armored man on a armored horse trying to rally the humans back to the Huns she takes action. "Be silent!" Aelasuria keeps in mind that there might be a Hun spell caster. If there is one she will reserve silence for him or her. If not she casts silence on the armored man. It certainly would help the chaos if he couldn't give orders.

Without the style of a charging warhorse, Seti runs forward behind the others, riding with Titus if such an offer is made, running if not. Such open battle is not his field of study, but it is his experience that there is always a leader amongst an enemy. He thinks over his familiarity with Orc culture. It seems like if the leader was an Orcish warrior, he would have parlayed directly, shown no fear, and made his leadership clear. However, a shaman, or a human would not be as likely to do so.

For now, the children are beyond his help, and Seti is certain that serendipity will bring the leader to the king, one way or another.

Silence is a very effective spell for shutting up an enemy commander.   Even without hearing him, Aelasuria knows immediately what he must be thinking, because she sees an angry glare from beneath that helmet.

Elf magic!

He turns his horse and heads along with the Orcs towards the east.

Theoderic gets through the gate, and into the street, and the others are close behind.  With the gate behind him, he rides right into the middle of where chaos seems the thickest.

”I am Theoderic, King of the Eastern Franks and Belgica!” he says.  “You who have served the Huns have one chance for amnesty, and it is now!”

The chaos in the street is not just Orcs and Humans fighting.  In fact, there are very few Orcs to be seen.  The Orcs that came out for the meeting were run down, or they fled, and there are only a few others in sight.  Most seem to be headed for the east gate and out.  But they have dragged with them a number of the children of the town, and now, the people of Turnacum start to think that just maybe, the Orcs won’t get away with this.  Many of them come out of homes and shops, explaining how their son/daughter/grandchildren/whatever was taken by the Huns and begging for immediate help.  The crowd grows quickly.

So many Humans, pressed together, frantic, excited… Spica can only take so much.  She rears up, scared, and backs away when some people begin to press towards her.  They don’t mean harm, in fact, Aelasuria hears some of them- they are just overwhelmed and amazed to see a Unicorn.

Gian follows along behind Titus.  He’s seen battles already… this is different.  This is chaos…  there are so many people coming into the street.  Before his eyes the nature of the situation is changing- its not so much a battle anymore as a large and emotional crowd, and he knows, that can be just as dangerous.  But he doesn’t ask “what do we do?”.  He just counts on Titus to know, and to do it… he watches Titus’s back and stays ready to help.

The same silence spell that nullified the Human commander's attempt to reform his troops also interrupts Scolo's spell casting.  Next to him, Melissa hears.. or rather doesn't hear.. the sudden lack of noise and knows they are in the area of a spell.  She grabs his arm and motions to move, scrambling along the tile rooftop.  She points southeast- across a street from where they are now is the town's cemetery, the yard behind the temple.  The street is crowded, but she points out a route through the graveyard that would take them to the far side of the temple, near the east gate.  As soon as she can speak again she tells him "We can cut them all off.  If we create even a short delay at the gate, Theoderic will have them all bottled up.  Can you do that teleport thing again?  But NOT to the temple, sometimes places like that have wards against that."

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

If we shut the gate I can keep it shut with magic.
Poof!
Scolo, Melissa and Edgar reappear at the gatehouse. He hands her his +3 oyster shucker and shruggs.

Edgar says: if you prefer you can use the waffle iron as a melee weapon - but that is less predictable.

Scolos handbag stiffens until it is completely erect. Anyone but Scolo might chuckle at this but he would not know why.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Seeing that her spell has the desired effect she's unfortinatly unaware that she managed to snag scolo as well. Seeing the angry glare gave her a sense of satisfaction. Annoying the commander was the least of what he had coming today for endangering the lives of children!

Gently she caresses spica's neck her voice warm and soothing as she speaks to her. "It's ok spica they mean you no harm. It's just the first time they have seen a wonder like you." Her expression is gentle and loving as she speaks. Then to the crowd. "Please make way so that we can help your children. King Theoderic, I and his army will do all in our power to save the children. Make way so that we can take action Immediately."

She keeps a eye on things trying to cease any opportunity to hinder the Huns and free the children with her magic.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Seti slides down from the back of Titus's horse, lest he get caught up in the combat and disembark less graciously. Perhaps here he could be of some use in calming the crowd.

He holds his staff high and shouts, in a booming voice, "Hold your place!"

"King Theodoric has offered his protection to all. Now either take up arms and follow him or return to your homes until the battle is won, else you may cause more harm than good. The Orcs shall not escape, nor any Human traitors. All efforts are being made to protect your children, and to eternally punish any who should harm them. Now choose wisely!"
