Re: The Winter Merchants' Faire

Aelasuria Soulwater:
Honestly due to the wedding I really need to be in five places at once.

That's how it goes with weddings.

Meanwhile, back at the Dwarfmart:

Cirostis has an edge most Dwarves do not.  Having had his own business, he knows about those strange, unpredictable, oft-confusing, very aggravating, yet entirely indispensable things known as customers.  You can't yell at them, or give them orders (usually- sometimes, they think is part of the “atmosphere” and Cirostis has already discovered that some customers here expect their Dwarves to be gruff and grim... just not selling any fabric in a color that is named after a fruit.  There is just no way for Dunduin to say “why we don't we look at this Autumn Peach Satin” without provoking giggles.)  You have to treat them with... diplomacy!

And fortunately, this is a skill Cirostis has.

While the curious gather to listen to Arctos's orations, Cirostis does what he can.  But as we said... he's got choices to make.

The Elves are certainly interested in the cloth.  They would gladly take the whole load, a package deal.
The Wererat crews, who consider themselves “brokers” will buy almost anything, of course.

The Elves are the better customers to pursue if Cirostis is after a staight cash return.   Or perhaps even some potions or “minor” magic.  (Having just come through a desperate war, Elves are somewhat hesistant to part with significant magic weapons or armor they may happen to own.)

The Wererat Crews, on the other hand, won't pay as well in cash, but clearly have an assortment of “interesting” stuff they've acquired that they would be willing to trade.  And it may seem odd to expect that they would make a favorable deal with magic in return for cloth, but Cirostis also knows a thing or two about economics, and he knows that the Wererats know:  like gold, cloth is a “liquid” asset.  It can be readily sold or traded anywhere.  There might be two or three people in the whole city interested in a specific magic item... or maybe no one at all... but lots of people want clothes.  Also, whereas an item must be sold as an item, it's easy to sell a few yards of cloth from a roll.  And far more people can afford a few yards of satin than can afford a magic item.  That means, from the merchant's point of view, cloth is a much easier commodity than magic items, and so the Wererats might be eager to trade.

So the Dwarves have choices here.  They have possible buyers lined up, but do they want to deal with the Elves or the Wererats?

* * * * * * *

Theoderic settles the tab with Udna.

"I promise you a bath," he says to his bride-to-be.  "But I'm wondering, where to build it.  These last few months has seen my kingdom grow, and in directions I didn't expect.  Can I manage all of Belgica from little Raviniacum, or will we have to move?  I don't think I want to be in a city."

Udna lets them recover together, two very relaxed customers feeling the pleasant warmth of well worked muscles.

Erm... Yes well I could make boots like that ... But ... Um ... How to say ... The uh wedding is very soon.

The truth is, Scolo would love to make things for awhile - hell do it for free - but he is not sure how long they intend to stay, and he wanted to learn more spells, and try to find his people or maybe ... Oh I don't know. He sees something shiny in the distance.

Dunduin has some experience with requesting supplies and obtaining goods but rarely had to deal with selling wares. As a result he tells Cirostis "Cirostis, I'm entrusting you completely with this task. You have the knowledge and diplomacy to work this out. My knowledge is..well..more strategic in nature" he smiles. "I'm going to check in periodically with you and spend some time seeing what sort of aid we can put together to aid our brethren. May Vulcan guide you."

"Oh, you have authority to enlist troops as needed for transporting and protecting wares. I think that covers it."

Thank you, Sir. I will take a quick break here and visit the wererats to trade my cloak and a few things of my own. Then I will return and sell the cloth ... Are you selling your armor or anything else as well?

He approaches the Were Rats with the strange cube that opens doors first.
He greets them, Good Afternoon - I have a few things of my own I'm interested in trading and wanted to see what kinds of trades we could make.

Re: The Winter Merchants' Faire

Aelasuria is able to provide some further information about some of the magic possessed by the Wererat crews.  They don’t like people doing too much poking, but they know she is considered a friend by the Duke and Duchess and they give her a little leeway.

Along with the Cirostis, she takes a closer look at some of the Wererat wares.  She doesn’t have time to study everything, but some things come to her attention, but Cirostis has narrowed the investigation to the Wererats with that peculiar crystal cube:

There is an Elven Rapier.  It’s an old blade, thin, and flexible, a light, quick weapon well suited to the Elven style of fighting.  But as the Elves often do, they wove an additional enchantment into it.  Not only does it have a moderate enchantment as a weapon (+2), it has the odd ability to provide the user with an uncanny sixth sense of where the opponents are.  The wielder of this blade gains the “blind fighting” feat while using it.

The Breast plate armor with the Wolf figure is “shifter’s armor”, a common magic item in Lucimburic,  In addition to providing some moderate additional protection (+2) it, and whatever clothing it is worn over and with, and anything in pockets, merges into the wearer’s body when the wearer shape shifts- either by Lycanthropy or Druid magic.

The Crystal Cube is a variant of a near-legendary thing called a Cubic Gate.  It can open magical portals between different places, by placing one’s hand on the appropriate face of the cube.  There is a way to reset the “home” side of the cube, which has now been set for here in Lucimburic.   The other faces can only be discovered by testing, although the Wererats are certain one opens into a “big muddy city”.

The Quilted Armor, which is brightly colored in green and yellow squares, has a moderate enchantment, and gives +2 to tumbling skill rolls.  It also provides DR 5 against blunt impact damage, like falls, and slam attacks.

The sling bullets are ordinary +1 sling bullets.

Aelasuria does not yet have time to study the red armor, or the bronze pyramid, or the two other items this crew shows them:  One, though, the wererats explain:  It is ring of improved climbing.  The wand they are not describing, only “It has spells”.

Cirostis strokes his beard.

Hmmm ... I'm not really interested in any of this ... but maybe that cube for the right trade.

Now - I thought there was more, right?

He shows them what he has to trade

I have this fine cloak, it allows someone to carry more than they normally would, tools and weapons are instantly available when needed. And these Dwarven Waraxes - you won't find the like from anyone else. I've also got 2 beautiful saddles, but ... I was thinking of holding off on selling those.

Our fine cloth is for sale or trade if there are things here that meet the needs of my companion - otherwise we will trade for cash out right.

Re: The Winter Merchants' Faire

Aelasuria smiles at Theo giving him a hug then gently taking his hands she gives them a affectionate squeeze. "It is something we will need to think about. Perhaps a Map will help you think as you can look it over to figure out what you feel is best. If you determine that Raviniacum is best then we will build our home there. If after we have a time to think and discuss the situation we discover we will build or home somewhere else I am fine with that. I don't know if you would consider your grandmothers mark or not for various reasons. Although I wanted you to have that in mind as well when you make a choice."

At a different time with Scolo Aelasuria listens to Scolo with a look of understanding. Obviously with the wedding so close it's not realistic to produce a magical item. "I understand Scolo. Please don't worry about it before the wedding. You are interested in having access to a Magical workshop correct? If you are Cirostis and I are going to the Tower of higher arts. They have magical workshops there Scolo. Perhaps you could take advantage of them if you desire?" She lets Scolo consider that and then decide if he wishes to come with them or not.

OOC: This is responding to Ben's letting me know what Items are what as I identify them for Cirostis.

Happily Aelasuria accompanies Cirostis to examine the Were-Rat stores. She after all had been eager to identify some of their stock for potential purchase. Plus she had offered to help him identify some of it.

"Cirostis this Elven Rapier is unusually. It's got a strong magical enhancement to make it likelier to hit a monster. It also appears to imbue it's wielder with the skill of blindfighting. The breastplate is meant for the werefolk of Lucimburic. It will go with them when they shapechange. It's enhancement gives greater protection from harm. Very useful to anyone that can shapechange."

When she gets to the crystal cube she perks up with interest. "This enables one to travel to other places. How much do you want for this Crystal cube?" She looks the were-rat in the eye with a calm expression. It had value of that there was no doubt she was afraid though it would likely cost far more then she had.

A bit later she continues regarding the quilted armor. "This one is good for a street performer. Or anyone that regularly tumbles or  is likely to suffer blunt impact damage. For example falling or in wrestling if you were to be slammed into something. The sling bullets have a weak but useful enchantment. They are more likely to hit and hurt whatever you cast them at."

She laughs and smiles at Cirostis with a merry tinkle in her green eyes. "You have a discerning eye Master dwarf. It seems we are both interested in the same item."

She had little interest in a ring of improved climbing. That might be handy for a ranger or those who's profession required climbing walls instead of using flight. For a moment she is rather excited to come across a wand. However her interest quickly fades when they say spells. Very few wands could cast more then one type of spell and the only one that came to mind was not one she would care to own. "Please tell me it isn't a wand of wonder."

If there is time she will carefully try to identify it to confirm if that is the case. Looking over the wand for a bit as she tries to decipher it's secrets.

Re: The Winter Merchants' Faire

"The cloak is beautiful, but it is far beyond my price range," Rita responds to Cirostis. "Making a tabbard would be a good idea--if I had the skill to do it, which, unfortunately, I don't."

She doesn't take much notice of Arctos' speech. There is a lot of noise and talk everywhere with so many people shopping for gifts, so loud conversations don't seem unusual.

When Cirostis and Aelasuria go over to the rat shops, she goes along with them. It will be harder for any of the wererats to cheat her when there are friends nearby who  are likely less naive than she is and would pick up on that immediately.

The ring of improved climbing could be useful for Riordeg. So could the spear blunting armor.

"May I ask, how much are you asking for that ring? What are you charging for the spear blunting armor?"

The elven rapier looks like a very useful thing to have, but it might not be Riordeg's style of weapon.

She turns to Aelasuria. "Is an elven rapier usable only by elves, or can other races also use it?"

If it usable by non-elves, she will inquire about its cost as well.

The See No Evil ointments that make wearers invisible to evil could definitely be useful.

"How many uses are there in each vial, and how long does the invisibility to evil last?" she asks. "And how much are you asking for them?"

Rita also wants to purchase a crossbow for herself, as it would be quite useful for her to have a missile weapon. Then she could use it with the magical bolts that have powers against demons. She will ask the price of the bolts and where she might find an ordinary crossbow to buy.

Re: The Winter Merchants' Faire

Magic items have certain gold piece values... according to books Wererats never read.

The Wererats have their own thoughts about pricing things.  They are far more likely to think, "How much do I want this?  and How can I sell it?"

As a result, the "mysterious" magic items, the Bronze Pyramid and the Cubic Gate, they really don't value as much as they do the weapons and the armor and the wand.  And none of the items are anywhere "book" value, because the Wererats have no idea of the book value.

Aelasuria examines a rune-inscribed willow wand. The length is just shy of nine and three quarters inches long. It feels heavier than wood ought to be.

Cirostis has been negotiating with them for a while.  Here are the deals they will make:  (They will assume they get 2 saddlebags with a saddle)

There is an Elven Rapier:  Cirostis's cloak, or 2 saddles plus 8 Bolts of silk, or 1000 GP

The Breast plate armor with the Wolf figure:  Cirostis's cloak, or 2 saddles plus 8 Bolts of silk, or 1000 GP

The Crystal Cube:  1 saddle and four bolts of silk, or 8 bolts of silk, or 500 GP.

The Quilted Armor,  1 saddle and four bolts of silk, or 8 bolts of silk, or 500 GP.

The sling bullets:  5 for a gold piece.  The whole bag of 300 for a bolt of silk.

The Bronze Pyramid:   1 saddle and four bolts of silk, or 8 bolts of silk, or 500 GP.

The Wand:  The Two Dwarven Masterwork Axes

The Red Armor:  2000 GP

The Ring of Climbing:  1 saddle and four bolts of silk, or 8 bolts of silk, or 500

Aelasuria does not yet have time to study the red armor, or the bronze pyramid, or the two other items this crew shows them:  One, though, the wererats explain:  It is ring of improved climbing.  The wand they are not describing, only “It has spells”.

Re: The Winter Merchants' Faire

Seeing Arctos approach then smiles her green eyes have a sparkle in them when he talks about matrimony. It's clear she's excited about the wedding as she perks up at the thought of everyone gathering. Family and friends while the ceremony proceeds. "Yes Patre Theo and I will be married on the night of the solstice during the height of the celebration. Oh I think I can help you with that. Mergyon the Dukes seneschal must know all the master tailors of the kingdom. He is one who would settle for nothing less then the finest and I can assure you that is what you will get! I would be my pleasure to introduce you to him. For protective Ensorcelled clothing I think Scolo might be the wizard you seek. He did tell me he can make magical belts so why not shirts. However he is already under heavy obligations. I am afraid he would likely have to wait until after the Solstice to help you. If he agrees though he can use the Were-Owl workshops. His work is frankly amazing so I think you would be well pleased. If he doesn't I suggest the Were-Owl's their magic is very strong and I think they would do well by you. I am afraid I don't know where you can get War ponies. However I will enquire with Lady Babette about it. She knows many of the best shops in all of Lucimburic. And due to the Were folk's variety of natures I believe it's possible they might have ponies as well as war horses."

OOC: If you join us in the Tower of higher learning Arctos we can try to get what you need taken care of simultaneously. At least started.

She gives Rita a look of sympathy as she had considered the cloak as well. She whispers to Rita softly to keep it relatively private. "Rita if you really want the scale armor I can talk to Theo about it. Riordeg has been good to us and he's fighting for Theo. Maybe we can help you get it. Don't let the were-rats think you have deep pockets though there is no telling what they will do. You might be able to bargain them down a bit. Their first asking price is probably a bit high if they expect you to negotiate."

She smiles at Rita laughing a soft rich and lovely sound for a moment. Then she replies in a happy friendly tone. "Of course not. It's of elvish make however anyone can wield it that has the skill. However there are certain enchantments that can restrict a weapon to a certain person, their bloodline or a race. It's pretty rare though from what I have seen."

Her eyebrows shoot up at how much they want for the Elven rapier. She couldn't help but appreciate that they valued her peoples craftsmanship so much. They actually asked for Cirostis's cloak in exchange!

Seeing that the crystal Cube is actually possible to obtain she glances at Cirostis. If he bought it he would need help figuring it out. Well probably unless it was simple to use by anyone. He likely notes after she studies the wand her interest is renewed. "Well that is interesting."

She leans over whispering to Cirostis to keep it private to him. "The wand can summon a celestial Hippogriff. However I don't know if it has one charge or twenty. Wands usually are the purview of wizards such as myself. I am not sure if it's worth two of your  masterwork axes as I don't know their value." It's obvious that she's starting to have fun shopping. Perhaps a bit dimmed by the fact she can't buy most of it. Still it is enjoyable to get out and do a bit of shopping none the less!

In a normal voice to Rita, Cirostis, and Arctos. "If you need something identified I will be happy to help. It just takes time."

To the were rats she asks out of curiosity. "How much in gold for the wand?"

OOC: I know your busy Ben. Just wanted to remind you. Rita is interested in the scale armor that will blunt/break weapons that hit it.

Re: The Winter Merchants' Faire

The Wererats are a little peeved at Arctos's apparent sudden undercutting of Cirostis's negotiating authority.  They really don't like dealing with one appointed buyer, only to find that the buyer didn't have the position they thought he did.

But they're never going to turn down money.  They'll take 450 Gold for the wand.

* * * * * *

Over the long stretch of time, Dunduin has had time to get the armor and shield he acquired identified.

The Breastplate Armor is unique and quite peculiar.  Anakri, who identified it for Dunduin when they returned to Lucimburic, called it, "The Armor of the Compassionate Barbarian."

What the heck does that mean?

It means that in addition to providing it's +2 bonus, the armor, once daily, allows the wearer to become enraged.  During this time, the armor provides a temporary +2 bonus to Strength and Constitution, and to Will Saves, but curiously, causes ALL of the wearer's attacks to become "non-lethal", no matter what weapon he uses.  What's more, the effect wears off and the armor actually creates a penalty if the wearer or an ally attacks an opponent who has already been defeated, subdued, incapacitated, or whatever by non-lethal attacks.  Apparently the armor doesn't like that.

The Shield is an old Germanic piece called Wyrmturner.  It grants +1 protection, but this rises to +3 against any attack from Dragons or Dragonlike creatures.

Re: The Winter Merchants' Faire

There is more to the Winter Merchants’ Faire than the peculiar offerings of gangs of Wererat ruin scavengers.  When the Centaurs hit the market, they are drawn to other areas.

Most of the vendors are food vendors, and they run a broad range.  There are even some Halfings, and they’ve just arrived, having made (roughly) the same journey as many of the other characters, coming up the Meuse River through the Ardennes.  In fact, those who were at the Citadel at the Battle of Namaco would actually recognize a few!

There is an Elven food stand with light, puffy cookies made with almond flour, delicately sweetened and flavored.  Wild Honey collected from the forest- in fact, a variety of “gourmet” honeys, some with other ingredients.

There are artisans with small decorative trinkets- buttons, buckles, bells, and baubles… but nothing made of silver, because that metal is taboo here.

There is a whole line of shoe and boot makers.  Some of the boots are quite elaborate, and some even have special detachable seams, for the Lycanthrope who forgets to remove them before transforming.  The Centaurs have little interest in shoes and boots, though.

“Toy Animal Playsets” are very popular among the Lycanthropes.  With their caste based system, it is important for them to learn who is who and what is what, so there are sets of carved or molded animal figurines being displayed by various Lucimbrucian artisans.   These run a huge range in materials, quality and price.  Starting with simple, unpainted wooden figure sets worth a few gold pieces each, sets can run into the hundreds, with elaborate figures made of fine ceramic, highly decorated.

Apple Blossom drags Eadoin to see the farm implements being sold by blacksmiths.

It’s taken as a given that wizards and clerics enchant weapons, armor, and all kinds of other items.  But for some reason, simple agricultural tools are often overlooked.  But here they are- plows, some of which are enchanted.  Nothing incredible, because the farmers cannot afford incredible, but there are enchanted plows that are lighter, easier to use, or that promise larger and more bountiful crops.

A basic iron plow starts at 35 gold pieces here.  It is a heavy investment, but for a farmer should last a lifetime.  Or more.  Plenty of farmers use their father’s plow.  The magic plows cost a lot more, of course.

As the Centaurs disperse across the market, they’ll encounter familiar faces- for one, Rita, Riordeg and Aelasuria are fans of the merchants’ faire as well.

Meanwhile... The Wererats agree to Cirostis's offer.  They are puzzled by the pyramid themselves, but hey, if the Dwarf likes it, it's his.

Yes sir, we still have the paper the jewelry and your stuff as well as two waraxes one dwarf and one Orc. I have my cloak of course - that wizard identified the potion and i think we will want to keep it. If drunk before contact it protects against any poison or disease even the drainig power of undead. I think you should carry it - to prevent any uh difficulties between officers if you catch my meaning. I imagine we have some pay as well - how much is there?

Re: The Winter Merchants' Faire

She was slightly surprised when Arctos suddenly packs up all of the items interrupting negotiations with the were rats. She thought he might talk to Cirostis about it first they must have some prior arrangements. At least she hopes so!

She looks over at Scolo giving Edgar a sympathetic look as he flies away. Needless to say now she's curious about the bronze pyramid. After all Scolo seems to think it's important that Cirostis or Arctos buy it. After hearing his explanation though she's afraid if she wants to know she will have to identify it herself. Which would have to wait there were so many things at the shops!

"Thank you. I think I will attempt to acquire the cube. If nothing else it will enable me to visit friends in Lucimburic a bit easier. I very much like the idea of being able to visit Lady Babette and Duke Bastow as well as other friends I might make here. It's ideal actually if it can get me home as well. Not accounting for other possibilities it has such as adventure. The wand I truly hope has more then one charge I am uncertain if I have the ability to recharge it. I might try to acquire it depending on what happens. Since your already in negotiation for certain items could you please confirm what you have bought before I attempt to buy them for myself?" She's well aware the dwarves have far more buying power then she at the moment. No point in bidding against them and possibly driving prices up.

"Yes I wouldn't mind giving the cube a try. Since it can return us to Lucimburic it should be safe enough."

OOC: Just to be sure. Did you buy both the cube and the wand?

Needless to say when Aelasuria spots the centuars she takes a moment to greet Both Eadoin and Apple blossom. Brieftly she hugs apple blossom then Eadoin as best she can. "It's good to see you too. I am shopping with scolo and others at the were rat stores. Have fun you two I look forward to chatting when we have more time."

After things are settled at the stall where she might buy something. Probably not if the dwarves have already bought the items of interest. She moves on with Scolo to the second stall. "Shall we work together. I will idtentify the ax and you the Hammer? Or I can do both depending on what you have in mind."

She of course attemtps to identify a few interesting magical items. Needless to say in due time she goes with Cirostis and Arctos most likely to the tower of higher learning.

OOC: With Theo.

With Theo at Udna's she brings up the Dwarves needs. "Theo Cirostis, Dundain, and Arctos are deeply concerned about their people. The Huns have plagued them with a curse that appears to be trasnforming some of their people into something evil. We should bring this to Duke Barstows People as I believe they want our help." She then lets Theo consider yet one more problem the huns present.
