The player splutters on wine as the sentence is read.  What can I say, it wasn't expected. LOL

It builds on Cassandra's comment- standing on the shoulders of giants, as it is! *L*

a crystal key (1,000 sp value) with a red tassel.

1000 silver? Is this a typo, and meant to be gp, or did they for some reason list this as 1000sp instead of in gp?
(If so, it would be 100gp in OSRIC, although only 50gp for the 1st edition AD&D the module was written for. Yay for favorable exchange rates for us!)

A sik purse requires a combination dex/chr check to be opened.

I regularly paste text from the module into this game. This was one of those times. There are no reliable sources of crystal concentrate within the forbidden city.

Re: OOC#2

We have not really had a caller, I do not think, but Cassandra kinda-sorta seemed to be doing directions in Tegal manor?

Archonia will be going in whatever direction anyone suggests. If we are at an impasse, she would probably go with whatever Hieroman suggests, since she thinks they are rivals, but also because Hieroman was kinda-sorta the one who recruited everyone to come here.

She was?  Different player obviously.  Any reason why she might think they are rivals when Hieroman is a druid and Archonia is a mage?

Re: OOC#2

The semi-hiring by Hieroman was the DM adding Hieroman to the group, although Chester urged us along into, in the 'The Paranormalist' thread (msg #147, 150, 154).

The 'rivalry' was borne out of the 'Dwellers of the Forbidden City' thread (msg #212, 214, 215, 217, and 220). As noted in this ooc thread at the time (msg #911), Archonia misread the situation, because she has a different relationship with reality. Archonia was not being sarcastic or giving an attitude in her comments about the net- she can play at that, but almost everything she says and does in genuinely earnest. she thinks everything we are doing is really happening, but is yet still performative at the same time, so Hieroman's rebuke to her seemed to her that the druid was adding a new dynamic to the game. Probably she will think this until something eventful happens where they work together, as it will then be the trope of former rivals becoming best friends.

So, the any/only reason is because Archonia is out of her gourd.

Re: OOC#2

You are obviously free to play it however you want, but here we are 12 days later than that post was made, and this is the first time you've posted that Archonia's words were not said sarcastically, which is why Hieroman responded as she did.  To me providing hindsight info re the post is misconstruing how the original post was presented and framing the scene to your own ends which robs Hieroman of a fair response at that time.

Archonia:
"Oh, you just wanted a visual for this scene, not effectiveness. Very well then," Archonia replied, taking a corner of the net, understanding the situation now.

Hieroman:
Hieroman a little taken aback by Archonia's attitude isn't offering her a corner now though.

It should have been stated at the time that Archonia was not being sarcastic because we all know it reads that way, without your latest retrospective insight.  I'm really not interested in roleplaying some constructed slight between the characters because it would never have happened if you had been forthcoming with Archonia's intent at that time.

Hieroman, the forms hidden in the vines are too concealed to be identified (let alone from a distance of 50+ feet).

Re: OOC#2

Friends, I have calamitous news. Our dear friend, Orwin, did not recover from his knee surgery and ultimately succumbed to heart disease.

I will share what another DM wrote upon learning of his death:

Friends, I've just this minute discovered some terrible news.

Our dear friend and colleague John Leland, player of Sanbanme no Senshu, passed away last Wednesday from heart disease.

John was one of the originals and greats of the SCA and the Pennsic War, and founded the Barony of Middle Marches in 1970, in his persona of Jehan de la Marche. I believe he attended every Pennsic War but one from the event's founding until his passing. Very sadly, he will not be at this year's event, and I expect a worthy tribute will be made to his memory.

I first met and befriended John in about 2016 when I joined the game
Heroes of the Haunted Highlands here on RPoL. As fellow historians (he professional and I amateur), we soon bored the rest of the group with chatter about English history and medieval society. He would regale us yearly with his tales from the Pennsic War, which were always a joy to hear.

When that game finally ended several years ago, I mentioned to John that I planned to start an OA game at some point, which he promised to be present for once it got going. Sure enough, he was among the first to arrive and join our merry band here, but I did not think that this game would be the last we would see of him. At least, I am glad to have had this time to continue my conversations with him, both in PMs and here in the public discussion thread. He was a stalwart and a warrior, a gentleman and a scholar, and I will miss his presence here, as shall we all.

You may read John's obituary here: https://www.tributearchive.com...0/john-lowell-leland

In honour of the impact he had on the SCA, I invite you to watch this video about the Pennsic War. John first appears at around the 5:45 mark: https://youtu.be/gLX9SDJRggQ?si=XV0BQCItreVwg-34</i>

The real life death of anyone is never an easy subject to broach, though the read and watch was a very interesting insight.  I knew nothing about the Pennsic War or John obviously.  I feel that will be my loss.

He will be sorely missed. He was great fun to share a table with and a very gracious soul. I enjoyed it when he shared stories of his travels.

A heart breaking loss. Ornwin most assuredly deserves a hero’s farewell.

Edit: Thank you for sharing the video. What an amazing legacy.

Re: OOC#2

Reposting here what I already shared in another game...

That is sad news indeed. Although I have not been here very long, I took an immediate liking to John. He was obviously smart and interesting, but also seemed like a genuinely good fellow. I will say a prayer for him and his loved ones, and I look forward to reading the full obituary and watching the video. Thank you for sharing those.

-------

Following up, I have spent the past two hours reading and thinking and talking with a friend about John and his life. It started with the YouTube video and the obituary, then continued as I researched several of the things mentioned therein. I had no idea what an interesting life he had lived or what a significant figure he was in the history of the SCA.

As a lifelong gamer I have always been familiar with the organization, but I have never been a member. I think I will remedy that and join up as a way to pay tribute to John.

I also have never attended Pennsic, but I am going to look into the possibility of making the trip this year. Not only would it be great fun, I imagine they will find a way to honor him, and it would be nice to be there for that.

Potentially you might also interest others at Pennsic to this slice of what was his life Bart, enriching everyone in the process.  I'm sure many of them would be interest to know that this avenue to get into their groove is available to them.
