(not trying to flog Scrivener here, but) One of the many lovely things about that software is the way the 30-day trial works. If you don't use the software at all on a certain day, that day doesn't count. It's 30 one-day trials. Really gives you a chance to work with the software before you decide whether to buy it.

I've paid for and use Scrivener professionally. It's well worth the price tag, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

As you may or may not have seen, Jase is including a wiki in the next version. Very exciting for an information architect nerd like me :P

Online hosting or online download to make maps? I like Maptools, takes a little bit to get used to but quite powerful.

I've just used the RPOL scratchpad for most of my game notes. Google Docs for when things get too long or complicated.

No need to get fancy or expensive.

I use notepad and word documents stored in a Windows XP nested folder system to organize my campaign information.

I use local copy of TiddlyWiki http://tiddlywiki.com/

Fast, searchable, tags, all info in one file and makes automatic backups.

I use Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 to organise my online campaigns. Each major tab is a single campaign and each tab has `sub-tabs' in which to store information relevant to that campaign.

You can include pictures in the tabs and even include PDF files as printouts, plus a host of other useful things. Prior to the advent of onenote, I used Microsoft Word.

OneNote is pretty powerful, I'll attest. I use it in a work-context, as a digital project manager.

Here's some Scrivener competition that's FOSS*: Quoll Writer (http://quollwriter.com/). People who write more than I do might find it lacking, but it works for my needs. It has a section for characters (and automatically links their names to chapters when you type them), settings, chapters (obviously), and other organizational tools that I find helpful. I'm not participating in NaNo this year because, well, my master's program frankly takes too much time, but I have a piece of fanfic I'm writing on and off using Quoll, and it's really awesome for keeping me on task when I'm writing.

*FOSS = free open source software. I am all about this stuff.

I use http://www.wikidot.com/ - a nice simple wiki that I can use as a game website and to organise my game settings.  I have been using it for years - we used to design NWN Persistent Worlds using it :)

Trello is an obvious winner, if you haven't tried it yet, it's pretty easy and flexible.

Just wanted to add that Scrivener has periodic sales (NANOWRIMO aka November's "National Novel Writing Month" is one for sure, and there are others throughout the year) where it is half-price. I picked it up for $20 that way. Still haven't found the time to really learn how to use it, though.

Orgzly is really nice with many nice and easy to use features such as tags, note hierarchy, nots with subnotes can be moved easily even via cut n paste, multiple notebooks, sync with repository/dropbox, priority, optionally auto tag upon creation possibly including creation time, cross-platform, plus others.

Best part, it is free with no ads, but seems good enough to be well worth paying for.

I've been using Evernote for the past couple of years now. It's not super fancy, visually, but it's a pretty clean text editor, and the tags / notebook systems are kind of nice.

Bonus that the basic edition is free and you can access your work almost anywhere.

I don't know if it counts as an organizational tool as much as a tracking tool, but I use Kanboard for tracking the phases of larger writing projects.

Kanboard is a kanban board tool for Linux which is now cross-platform for Linux, FreeBSD, and Windows, in case anyone was wondering.

NOSTALGIA WARNING:

I remember something I used under MS-DOS a long time ago called Zoomracks!  I see Mac users might recognize it as a reincarnation of Hypercard...

It was basically a mutant database that emulated virtual rolodexes (called racks)that were sortable by any field on a "card", and could maintain several different racks of related "cards".  Cards could be easily cut from one rack and pasted to another.

Everything stored in Zoomracks! is stored as text.  I seem to remember it was also capable of linking within a rack from card to card...

Does this resemble Orgzly in some way?  Hmm... I may have to check that out.

END NOSTALGIA.  BEGIN OBLIGATORY ON-TOPIC CONTENT:

RPoL makes tools available to GMs to organize certain kinds of data (maps) and to link to offsite resources for a game.  I wrote up the rules of play for one of my games as a series of PDF documents stored on my Google Drive, and linked to them from a Notice, making them readily accessible to players.

This kind of thing doesn't help organize all your "shizzle", but it can help with the stuff you use a lot in-game.  I try to use the tools to good effect, then add to them what they don't provide directly with hypertext links, etc.
