Lack of 3rd party sheet hosting.

This is my first post on the site that isn't a game request, hooray for me.

I have noticed that people on this site tend to prefer people to post all of their information in threads rather than link a character sheet, can someone tell me why this is? Because I always saw websites like the tangled web and dndsheets as an easy way to store sheet information.

Re: Lack of 3rd party sheet hosting.

from my experience, having to go to a different site, even a linked one, is just one more step in a DM's workload, and can get a bit aggravating.   Several of my players do this, and while I don't really mind, it's just a little more tedious for me (or, at least, feels that way).

Re: Lack of 3rd party sheet hosting.

It's simpler.

I'm playing on this site, and I know how it works.  I don't want to have to go to X, Y, and Z site in order to play the game, and I certainly don't want to learn how to use another site to input a character sheet.

Occasionally as a GM, I have put player's sheets into a third party program and then hosted the output and imported that image into the sheet, but quite frankly it takes a lot more work on the GM's part for what is really very little benefit IMO.

RPoL's sheets work fine for me and it keeps it all in one place, which is how I like it.

Re: Lack of 3rd party sheet hosting.

Part of it is also compatibility. Third party sites are less likely to be viewable on phones and the like, which some of us use for a lot of our posting.

Re: Lack of 3rd party sheet hosting.

It's simplicity for me. I know I can find whatever I need in the little 'Character Details' link at the top of the page. It also allows me to insist that the character sheet I prefer is the one everyone uses.

So, two reasons: simplicity, and dictatorial impunity.

Re: Lack of 3rd party sheet hosting.

Also, 3rd party hosts can be a bit of a chore.  Yeah, maybe going and registering and sifting through your e-mail for the confirmation link and replying then going and getting used to the layout and starting your sheet isn't a big deal if you use them on a regular basis.

But for a lot of realistic players who know the game will probably last less than two months, it can be a dealbreaker.

Re: Lack of 3rd party sheet hosting.

Plus many of the third party sites seem only have sheets for whatever game systems are most popular this month.  Or just choose to specialise for their own reasons.

A GM who wants to run something a bit more unusual is going to have a hard time finding a site for it.  Whereas he can always throw together a plain text sheet that suits his preferences, and use it on RPoL.

And I would say that most GMs prefer to use RPoL's in-game character sheet pages, not a thread.  Games where the GM asks for character sheets to be posted in a thread are definitely in the minority.

Maybe WAP phones, but this is 100% not true for modern smart phones.  No offence.

That being said it would be nice to have more than just ascii options.

I have a super nice HTML sheet that I coded in my game.  It's not very user friendly to edit, but viewing it is amazing. It even has links to D20srd.org for quick reference of skills and whatnots.

It would be sweet to have some options for non-ascii sheets.   Either here, or by leveraging 3rd party sites.
