Ars Magica Bundle

The bundleofholding has a rather complete offering of Ars Magica books for about 25 in PDFs.

I heard good things, but would like to hear more, anyone have opinions on the system?

It's a rather crunchy system if that's a factor for you but the magic system is excellent and the campaign world is intricate, well researched and quite fun to play.

For anyone who picks up the (very reasonably priced) bundle, there is an Ars Magica discussion group on RPOL that would be happy to help you explore the game and how it works.

In essence, it's a fantasy game as viewed through the lens of 13th century Europe.  The focus of play a grouping of wizards who band together in communities of varying size and strength to pursue their dreams of knowledge, wealth, power or other esoteric things wizards want.  This community, called a Covenant, is as central a character as any of the players.  Events unfold over periods of time as short as the seasons of a year or decades depending on the game focus.

I'd be much more interested in the game if Character death wasn't practically hard coded in the rules, but I've never found a gm that would substitute being removed from play (Wanders off into the sunset/retires, what have you) in place of Actually actually dying.  From my perspective a minor fluff change that achieves the same end.

Given the particularly dire consequences of magic that I just got from skimming, I feel that AM is a “you toy with powers beyond your comprehension” kind of place?

Death isn't as hard coded as it was in Traveller where your character could die during creation ;)

Ars is a very 'hard fantasy's kind of game.  Death is sure for everyone eventually and it comes swiftly for the unwise and unlucky.  Wizards get a bit if a pass on the ravages of time but few others do.  And combat is pretty brutal but no worse than some other games.

The magic system is really, really flexible and is pretty much the Hallmark of the game.  Wizards dabble in all kinds of dangerous practices generally in the effort to catalog and quantify the Unknown into the Known.

I like the setting and the system and always have.  The Tribunal books are a fun read as are the books that cover the various magical Houses but you kind of have to understand the base rules before much of them make much sense.

If you have any questions, ferl free to rMail me and I'll do my best to help out or point you to someone who can.
