Sarge is in the House

Hello everyone

Just came across the site today and decided to stay at least for a spell.  I've been RPGing since 1990 and PbP for about 4 years now.  I haven't played for quite some time and the bug is killing me.  I'm an old geezer with a lot of crust and crankiness.  I am retired so am available a lot.  I know that I'm an acquired taste so understand when others need to be rid of me.  Hope that is acceptable to the group.

I'm not a good DM/ST, but those who have played claim to enjoy themselves.

I'm not a rules nazi or glory hound.  My characters usually focus on support, to cover down on the party's weaknesses.

I would love to check out (never had the pleasure of playing); L5R

Old school preferences are;  AD&D/DnD 3.5, OWoD 20th Aniv, Star Trek, some WH.

I've DM/ST  0 lvl DnD campaign, College Student Dorm from Hell OWoD, and a Star Trek game.  GM/STed several shorter stories.

Considering GM/STing a Warhammer 40K Guardsman unit. VtM; New Orleans (historical/Time Travel), a new 0 lvl DnD Campaign, or a FASA 2ed Star Trek (original/TNG not sure which).

Hello everyone

Hi, Sarge!

We're glad you're here!  It sounds like you and I have chewed some of the same ground, and may have similar outlooks, I don't know.  I'm rather a geezer myself, and know what it's like to be cranky, but I try not to let it show too much here.

There really isn't a "the group" here -- it's more like many groups playing thousands of games.  (Yeah, I'm as literal-minded as a Tinaliya...)  I think you'll be able to find at least a few groups that will be a good fit for you.

Being retired can be a good thing, especially if you intend to run a game or two.

But that's the very definition of a good Game Master... give it a go and see what you know.

It's sounding more and more like you'd make a great GM and a great player.

As would I!  I'd have to study up on the rules, but anything set in ancient Nippon would definitely trip my trigger.

I go a bit older-school, me:  AD&D 2e, Classic Traveller, anything set in M.A.R. Barker's world of Tekumel, but that's all personal preference. As long as the game is fun, the players interesting, and the GM handles well, all is good.

WarHammer and Rogue Trader seem to be popular enough hereabouts.  Look in some of the places I mention further on and see what you can find.

Impressive.  Yeah, you really should consider being a GM here once you get your sea legs under ya.

It really sounds like you should jet out to Game Proposals, Input, and Advice (aka GPIA) and float some game proposals when you're ready to run.  That way you can see whether or not you have enough interest to justify putting all that work into developing a game.

(NOTE:  before posting anywhere on RPoL, it's a really good idea to look at the Notices that are stickied at the top of the topic list - those spell out what goes on (and what does not go on) in each forum.

If you need help getting set up, or have questions, ask away.  Good places for that are:  Community Chat (also great to just hang out and talk about whatever with folks and get to know the place), Game Systems (for rule or gameplay related stuff in a particular system.), and GPIA

If you're looking for a game to play in, GPIA is also great for finding games that are just starting up.  If already established games are what you seek, then look in Wanted - Players.

When you have set up a game, you can advertise for players in Wanted - Players  The "Wanted" boards are special forums and have special rules, so be sure you read the Notices there.

I've ran off at the keyboard quite enough, I think, for you to get the picture.
Get out there and get you some!  See ya 'round, Sarge!

In reply to horus (msg # 2):

Thank You for the warm welcome Horus.  Yea, I started with 1st Ed Unearthed Arcana (that DM had the largest library any military barracks could muster back then.  He was all books AD&D, Gurps, Paladian, etc).

I learned a valuable lesson already.  READ notices to the very end.  I started a game and right now am hunting to find THE notice that tells me how to 'request players' (shaking my head, its been that kind of a week).  I just didn't include them as they are a little too old school for the most active generations.  Not many could handle a 0 level DnD campaign.

My first ever character (Unearthed Arcana) was a -1000 xp Cavalier and boy those early days were hard.  I became the killer of steeds as I learned trained mounts will jump off cliffs for their knights... and never play with witches unless you have backup.  The Demons and DemiGods, Deities, and the other unforsaken books made the Monster Manuals look like preschool fingerpainting.

I will certainly bring this up in the general chats.  Thanks again for the welcome and advice.

Sure thing, Sarge.  I'll look for you in Community Chat, then.  If I don't find you there, I'll answer some of your questions here and try to help you find answers.

Well, I see where you floated a wide range of proposals in a single post in GPIA.  Prepare for some interest, 'cause some of those ideas are gonna reach some folks here in just the right way.

Nothing in Community Chat just yet, so let me take a crack at answering what you asked:

You might spend a good while in the Help System (look in Games --> the GM Menu) for the "accepting players" switch.

Hang on a tick while I find it in the private Q&A I maintain in case I have a "senior moment".  (It's basically a "where do I find X" kinda list):

quote:
Q:  Where do I find the switch to turn "Accepting Players" on and off?
A:  GM Menu --> Game Settings --> Edit Game Details --> Settings block.

So go to your game, find the link to GM Menu in the group of links at upper right, click on it, and off you go.

Look in the upper right of that Settings block when you get there.  While you're there, look around.  Lots of other neat stuff there, too.

When you're done looking around, if your game is actually ready to play, you should consider posting an advertisement in Wanted - Players, too.

I don't post much through the week (I work evening watch), but will be around if you need more help.

In reply to horus (msg # 4):

Glad that I've got so many people helping me out.  Thanks Horus.  Been busy once I realized 'finding players' go via PMs instead of posting on the recruitment thread. all at once a got a large group in two of my three stories.  One got officially started today and the second hopefully tomorrow.

The third I don't know how that is going to end up.  I see a lot more Star Wars fans than Star Trek.

And that Dagburn 'New Guy Parole' is killing me.
           Can't apply
Can't bump my 'seeking players' thread.

Being the 'New Guy' sucks sometimes. still having a great time and the community is a lot better than the ones I've been at in the past.

In reply to Sarge67 (msg # 5):

Yeah, about the probationary period:  if you use the two weeks to develop your games and get to know the GM toolkit, it will pass quickly.

Star Wars/Star Trek?  I'm ambivalent at best about the direction Disney has taken Star Wars -- too much of an old-school guy, I guess.

Star Trek always seemed to me one of the more hopeful futures ever created in fiction.  I am comfortable playing in this universe when I have the time.

I'm very glad to see a new GM here, and wish you well in all your endeavors!

That has nothing to do with "New Guy Parole", it's a permanent feature that applies to all site users, no matter how long they've been here.

Ads in the Wanted forums will only be bumped by new posts once every seven days.  Though you can post to them as often as you like (with updates, for example, or to respond to requests for clarification), the thread will not be bumped unless you are posting more than seven days after the previous bump.
