I've recently been reading the Golden Compass, and it's wonderfully vivid. I was thinking about how interesting it would be to play in a game set in the same world (I don't have the time to GM anything right now). Preferably it would be free-form or some sort of similar homebrew, and I'm open to whatever maturity rating the GM was most comfortable with.

I would love to play in this. Having a Deamon would be awesome. Don't know if I would want to gm it though

Kind of seems like your standard D&D wizard's familiar, even down to the xp loss if the link between the wizard and familiar is severed, albeit none of them can actually cast spells.  Basically, everyone in the world has this feat: http://dnd.arkalseif.info/feat...tain-familiar--2078/

Since one dies without the other I imagine it would be a bit more severe than an xp loss. And the world itself  is certainly a huge part of the appeal, not just the concept of daemons.
