Re: The Battle of Turnacum
“Where is Ovo?” Rita asks when Aelasuria says she expects him back soon. “I’ve been so preoccupied with my own responsibilities that I don’t remember where he went. Is he out scouting?
Do we know which River Goddess is tired from recently battling a demon? Are you referring to the one we helped at the Oise? That was months ago. I don’t know how quickly a River Goddess would recover. Besides, I thought we can only call upon the goddess of the particular river we are near. I don’t know if the goddess of a distant river can send a sister to help out a river that is not either of theirs.”
She looks to Aelasuria, hoping her friend can provide some answers.
Rita understands that Aelasuria needs her magic for the upcoming battle. “It makes sense keeping Cirrus at the rear. I don’t know whether wearing armor would slow her down and mute some of her abilities,” she says.
She listens in horror as Seti reports their enemy is an insect-like giant demon who may very well have shaman powers. How many demons are in this world now, she wonders. For every one they kill, several more seem to appear.
“Is it the spirit of this River who is tired?” she asks Seti. “And should we expect the demon to be a spellcaster, some sort of demon shaman?
A demon like that almost certainly can be hit only by magical weapons. We should make sure to enchant the weapons anyone planning to fight will use, if they are not already enchanted. If Dagnish can fight like Vagrenk, we should put him on a horse and bring him along. Vagrenk played a critical role in killing such creatures. When I cast a strength spell on him, he was even more powerful. If we can get Dagnish a magical weapon, I can cast the strength spell on him.
Do we expect the iron warriors to be there as well? Are we going to have to fight them and a demon at the same time?”
“The demon’s bodyguard could very well be another demon,” she thinks out loud. Then Melissa shows up.
“Do you know anything of this creature, what it can do and what its weaknesses are? If you do, please share that knowledge with us, as it will be of tremendous help.”
If Theoderic’s group is battling a demon, she should be there, Rita thinks to herself. But before she can say anything, Titus speaks up, recommending Theoderic bring her along.
“What about Riordeg?” she asks the group, suddenly fearful of leaving him. “Is he to stay with the centaurs? If he is, please, at least let me say goodbye to him before we go,” she asks.
She doesn’t really want to be separated from Riordeg at a time like this. The only reason she had come over to this group to begin with was to discuss the unnaturally cold weather. It was supposed to be a quick trip, then back to Riordeg and the centaurs.
“And Squijjit—should he come with us? The last thing I want to do is risk his life. Perhaps he could head to the river unseen and there ask the River Goddess for help,” she recommends.
Rita realizes Seti has access to spells more powerful than her own.
Titus’ mention of Zerova only adds to the horror.
“Might Zerova be there as well? Are we even capable of fighting both her and this demon at the same time?” she asks the group.
I'm scaring everyone with all these worst case scenarios, she realizes. They might pick up on her fears, and that would weaken their own motivation. She tries to dismiss the growing fears from her mind, focusing instead on the Lord and Lady she serves.
"Lord Pluto and Lady Proserpina, please be with us in this fight," she prays aloud.
