Game map name

I'd like to be able to name a game map ... rather than "Map/Image for Group #", it'd be nice to be able to specify "The Green Dragon Tavern", and have it display "The Green Dragon Tavern (group #)".

Easier to navigate to the right map (when you're in multiple groups or the GM, then it's hard to remember which group = which map), and much more atmospheric. :>

Name would be another column on the upload map screen.  Name should persist until overtyped (ie doesn't have to be retyped if I upload an updated combat map), and if blank or deleted would default to "Map/Image for Group #".

Re: Game map name

Ooh...+1!  That would be nice.

Not awesomely amazingly I'll-still-be-buzzing-about-this-three-years-later like Language Groups, but nice.

Agreed, as long as the group was still visible as well.

Re: Game map name

As someone who has seen utter confusion (and been utterly confused) that could have likely been eliminated by such a feature, I would also like to see it implemented, if possible.

Re: Game map name

I usually just get rid of maps entirely for this reason once we are not explicitly using them in the game. If we could name them, I might keep around areas they are likely to visit again in the images.

Re: Game map name

Couldn't you just create a game maps thread and post the images of the maps with the name there?

Re: Game map name

Having a work around isn't an excuse.

There is a game map button. So it should be useful.

Re: Game map name

Actually the "work around" is the better option in a number of ways.  No limit on the map size for starters.

Re: Game map name

Cool? Second thing to fix?

I suppose you could use the wiki feature and post your maps on there too?

Re: Game map name

Yes, you could do that.

And no, it is not a "second thing to fix".  We have provided different options for maps, all of which are equally usable.  Just use the one that suits best.

Want maps above a certain size?  Then a thread (or the wiki) will do it.

Want maps above a certain size, and on RPoL?  Then a game thread is the way to go.

Want the simple option?  The Game Maps feature is very basic.

None of them is really a work around, they're just alternate options, depending on what you want.

Re: Game map name

But that's... kind of a thing here.

Skald didn't propose a whole new way of showing maps, so whether or not there are other ways to show maps that may or may not have their own strengths or weaknesses is totally irrelevant.

He just suggested a quick tweak to one of the features we have that would make it easier to use.

I'm only in a couple of games that use multiple maps, and none of them have more than, I'm pretty sure, four, running `at a time'.  At least, not for me -- I guess some of them might have maps in other Groups, but that's not my problem.

I still, when I do need to go look at a map in one of those games, notice that it's awkward to find the one I want.  Not `difficult'.  You just keep trying 'til you get it and it's usually only two tries.  But `awkward' is fair.

And this seems like an easy thing and it would be nice.  I like it.

Plus, it adds a little to the ambiance, which is one of RPoL's strengths over a lot of other forums.  I'm not going to loop at The Map For Group 0, I'm going to look at the Map of Talhamnoduin.

Which I can still spell without looking it up.  glares at Skald  I could have used those neurons for something useful, you know.  I'm sure there's a recipe or something they'd have been good for.

Re: Game map name

WOW, I just read the rules for this forum.

I don't think anyone is adverse to the maps being able to be named.

I propose the additional fix that Game Maps should be the best place to keep maps on RPOL. The first step being adding names for map and the second would be removing the size cap on maps, which in actionable terms would mean allowing a URL for an image to be assigned to the game map slots, Then we could just use an image hosting site for game maps rather than using RPOL's resources.

Re: Game map name

Descenting opinion.

Wouldn't this mean there would have to be a whole new scree that related the named maps to the groups that could observe them?

Re: Game map name

No. The Update Game Maps screen would just need another column.

I don't know how hard it would be to untie the maps from the one-per-Group deal we have now. That would also be nice, but while I do see games having to add everyone to another Group just to use a map, we have enough Groups available now that that seems not too inconvenient to me.

Re: Game map name

What's particularly useful to Mr about the map tab is that I can open it when I'm already in a post. I can't do that with a maps thread.

I +1 Skald's suggestion.

Re: Game map name

I've been using that tie-in feature with a game I recently started. I have a map that has unexplored areas blanked out; as the group uncovers more of it, I expose those parts of the map, save the file, and upload it here. All the action is currently in one Group; anyone reading the in-character post can just click on the Game Map link and go right to the correct map.

Sometimes they may have to clear their cache to see an update, but that'd apply to anyone.
