Need a new GM?

Sometimes GMs get burnt out.
Sometimes GMs have real life issues that come up.

Wondering if there might be some usefulness in a feature/thread where GMs that are currently running a game and need a break can look for another GM to take over.  Or is this simply covered by "Wanted - GMs"?

Next, a way for games where a GM disappears to survive.   Some mechanism where if the GM disappears the players can look for a new GM or maybe a player steps up and moderators set up a new GM with access so that a game can go on.

Need a new GM?

These features already exist.

Wanted - GMs covers the need to find a new GM.

If a GM disappears, players can already ask the Moderators to transfer ownership of the game to one of them, with certain limitations:

  1. The player who wants to take over must already have GM status in that game - we will never promote a player or editor to GM.

  2. The original GM must not have set the "sole ownership" flag to "on".

  3. The original GM must have been absent from the game (ie: has not logged in at all) for at least three months.

I figured as much.

I kinda get some of the reasoning behind not allowing others to take over a GMless game but could you give the more official reasoning?

For what I perceive to be the more common issue, a game losing it's one and only GM...  Any recourse now besides a group finding a new GM and starting a "new" game from scratch?

Re:  Need a new GM?

The reason we won't promote somebody to GM status is that we don't want to give a new person access to all of the game's PMs (some of which may contain information that the players were happy to share with the original GM, but not with anybody else).  If they already have GM status, then they have access to those PMs already, so promotion to Primary GM just gives them some new GM options.

If a game loses it's only GM then yes, the only thing the players can do is find somebody to start a new game for them.

Re:  Need a new GM?

The reasoning would be that the system allows a GM to set a flag in advance denoting the OWNER of the material, the world, the characters, the NPCs and such, to set his wishes as to the disposal of HIS/HER material in the advent of his disappearance.

RPoL believes that the creator of the game is the SOLE owner of the game and allows that owner to decide in advance what to do with his property in the advent that he disappears (sort of a will).

Imagine what would happen if a GM went on vacation or was called out of town on military service and disappeared for three months, then came back and someone else now OWNED his game and made serious changes to it ? What would happen if a Cyberpunk2020 game was now a My Little Pony game ? How about if a player the GM did not particularly like was now the owner of his game after he came back from a serious accident ? It would not be pretty on either side.

Just my opinion though. Jace may have a different opinion. :) Or it could be like BBR says and be an issue of private PMs. (Guess we posted at the same time) :)
