IC: (YES another) D&D 5e tropes & fractured traditions

I'm of the mind that I've seen too many non-standard approaches that are departures from tropes, and heavily-gutted genres versus slight but subtle alterations the classic scenarios.

So I'd like to run a fairly predictable, but still hopefully enjoyable game. I hope that it will be approachable for new players and this (me *waves*) new DM (for 5e).

You will see some of the tropes used quite deadpanned. Fighting sewer rats, killing goblin invaders, and slaying the dragon overlord are all ideas I have. And then there will be slight twists. Those twists will be based on infamous or famous fairy-tales. Mostly intact with a noticeable twist that may disguise them at face value.

I'm going to start at 1st level *groan* yeah, I know. I need to learn though, sorry. :s I've gotta take it one step at a time. I prefer higher level play too, people. In fact I want people who don't get bored at higher level. I just have no realistic hope we'll get there without lightning in a bottle. I can lie to you, but all I have is hopes and persistence. I am stubborn, but not always reliable. The game may seem several long pauses, but I'll try to keep the stories short. So we can finish what we start.

Is anyone interested??

I've never been part of a standard fare D&D game. I might be interested, or at least want to watch.

I hear what you're saying, V. Sometimes, with D&D (5e), the tried-and-true is best. Give me a standard party any day over a game whose players are "bored with the same old thing" and want to play an amphibious Kraken . . . "and with wings -- that would be soooo cool!", or maybe a Half-Orc, Half-Frost Giant. And don't forget the fire-breathing Unicorn whose horn fires ballista bolts, and with hugely big claws! Oh, and by the way, with all of the above being played as surly, angst-ridden, and moody.

The same can be said vis-à-vis the underpinnings of the campaign, as you have observed. Sometimes tried and true is best -- the campaign will stand or fall based on the quality of the DM and the players, not whether the party assembles in a tavern on a dark and stormy night. :)

I'll be happy to check out your game.

Nothing wrong with a well-crafted cheeseburger and fries.

I've only recently started D&D so I get a little wistful when I hear all this talk about avoiding all the "overdone" tropes which I've never actually been able to do or see in play!  I'm interested.

In reply to GreyGriffin (msg # 8):

This and the other comments above are all VERY encouraging. Forgive me for lumping them together under this reply tag. The cheeseburger and fries is exactlythe metaphor. It should be somewhat less gourmet,  but still very satisfying, and most of all quick and easy.

As for the firebrathing unicorn. hehe I am guilty of those characters. I have a half-dragon centaur in a 3.5 game currently, but mainly for their strength to carry a heavy fighter. You did capture my thought though, there's a REASON for these tropes.

Moreover than PCs, the saving the innocent from a dragon does not get old, for me. Fighting big hulking giants that "aren't cannibals!" but eat people, is something I'm getting emaciated from starvation. EVERY game I play or get tapped to GM needs an atypical attention, and THAT has become the new norm.

In reply to bkwrm79 (msg # 9):
YOU are precisely the kind of player I'm looking for. D&D 5e is still new enough. Yet many carry-over players from other iterations have somewhat cook-blocked those like yourself from enjoying what they were able to a decade or more ago. So do not fret. You are very good company. It is silly that atypical has to be the standard, with the only exception being modules.

With that said, this interest well exceeds my other idea. So I'm 90% sure I'll GM this. I do implore you, and ask you very desperately, don't forget about this pitch, please. I want to plan the campaign now that I have a group to play under me. You are welcome to quit if the game turns out less than you'd prefer, but just Rmail me if you lose interest. That way I can keep tabs on who is left.

5e is very current, so I should be able to find a group one way or the other, but I always like to make I have a group when I start the adventure work. I'll count you all as auto-accepted, so long as you don't come up with anything too bizzare, or even clearly bizarre at all. You don't have to play cookie cutter half-orc barbarians and half-elf bards though. I want that to be clear too.

I got into D&D 5e comparatively recently. This definitely catches my interest.

To prevent (illegally) bumping this thread, I'll give the game link now. Bear in mind it will take about two weeks to actually be ready for admission. You're welcome to RTJ though. :)
