IC: A big weird object filled with old video games

Hey, I'm thinking of running a game set on a mysterious space anomaly that appeared in Earth orbit (at L2) one day. Various space agencies of course sent missions to investigate, and what they found was a landscape seemingly drawing inspiration from 3rd and 4th generation video game consoles... sort of. It's a big weird mystery that they're keeping secret from the populace at large.

To help their field scientists navigate the strange environments, they're recruiting "experts" in the form of civilians who seem skilled at (or knowledgeable about) games of this era. That's the players: speedrunners, retrogamers, media historians, obsessive cosplayers, over-the-hill champs who won a tournament 30 years ago...

The game will be in GURPS. Familiarity is not required, as character creation will be ongoing as we play. If we hit a point where your character might have a skill, you can choose to take it, if it fits your concept and doesn't contradict anything previously established.

Inspirations: Event Horizon, Cube, Labyrinth, Stargate, Captain N: The Game Master
Mood: Mysterious, dangerous, thrilling, awe and wonder and horror

Why L2? And which L2, Earth-Sun or Earth-Moon?

I'm interested, pending more details.

In reply to tmagann (msg # 2):

Earth-Moon. It displaced the Webb telescope, which has seemingly vanished. The object appears to be capable of self-correcting to the degree that it hasn't fallen out of its L2 orbit.

This game isn't going to be so much about the science as it is about the atmosphere and mystery. Hard science will be observed chiefly in its absence.

But the ships' solar cells will work, and the space station will be blocked from Earth View. The first bit is probably more important than the second, but you never know.

Yeah, there are no direct eyes on it.
