Considering a "criminal sandbox" reboot

'Bout a year ago, I tried to get a game that I had written going. It fell apart, probably because I couldn't get my vision across. Maybe I still can't I don't know, but I've been tweaking on the game for a fair bit since then. Maybe I'll take another stab at it. The game is called Crime and Chaos. I'll make the PDF available in the game threads if anyone decides it's worth trying out.

Considering a "criminal sandbox" reboot

I might be interested. Can you give me (and everyone else) an overview of the setting?

Considering a "criminal sandbox" reboot

Sort of. I wrote the game based on a combination of inspirations from GTA V and Saints Row 3-4 (although more 3 than 4). I have a bunch of parody names for a number of places. A thing that annoys me is that I will cue in on a name for something before some other thing takes it. I ran a game centered around the Sands of Time far before Prince of Persia ever latched onto it.

I digress. The first parody locale is called Broad City (had the idea for the name before the show because Chicago is apparently the City of Broad Shoulders). It's a bit of a combination of Las Vegas and Chicago. Frank Ridley even let me use a picture of Honest Gil as the President of Murica so long as I didn't use the words Honest, Gil, or Fulbright because those could be latched onto by represent.us, but he still had the rights to his image (more or less).

Broad City is the most relevant  locale, but there's also Fort Patton (Knox) Lala City (Sort of all of Urban Southern California, not just Las Angeles). I also have generalized caricatures of areas in the Deep South such as New Orleans (Nawlins) Florida and its indistinguishable beach cities, and of course, the part of Nointernetland I grew up in, Arkansas (although good on me, I've been living in one of the Internet capable Interstate Towns for about 7 years now). I don't have a name for the state or city of New York yet. Might do for one if a player's history puts their origin there.

So yeah, Murica is the nation the game takes place within--Sort of like regular America but with higher kill counts on their murderous/hate crime/negligent manslaughter sprees--But the game doesn't particularly care about that. The idea is that the players are anti-heroes à la those video games. These rules will be followed though, even if you don't necessarily follow them to a t when you play the noted video games:

quote:
if a game exists for the sole purpose of describing or playing out graphic sex in conjunction with crime, cruelty, or violence, it will not be permitted.  Likewise, games are not allowed which exist for the sole purpose of the graphic depiction of:
  • crime and gore;
  • ethnic, religious, or racial intolerance;
  • sexual assault;
  • torture;
  • dehumanizing murder; and/or
  • the abuse of children.

That is to say that while violence and death will be a part of the game, we're more likely to treat it like a joke/parody/testing game mechanics than glorification of it or social commentary.

Considering a "criminal sandbox" reboot

Also, since the game is (sort of) about modern murder-hobos, it's probably gonna be adult.

I like to get well more than enough, because I have never seen a game where half the players didn't bow out.

Re: Considering a "criminal sandbox" reboot

Sure. That's actually an interesting parody name of Europe. Being a foreigner is a disadvantage :D

Re: Considering a "criminal sandbox" reboot

Not having played GTA or Saint's Row (I know, I know, it's just not a game I want to play), would I be correct in assuming the game is all about a crew and their crime sprees, something similar, or something else entirely?

Mostly it's about crimes, although "sprees" is often less accurate than "heists" in the later games (GTA at least. For Saints Row, it's still quite a bit of crime sprees). Partly it's also about larger stories the characters get wrapped up in. A gang banger who gets busted by dirty cops and has to either play by their broken rules, or find out a way around them. A politician bringing in a paramilitary organization, and they both pretty much immediately try to play both sides. A gangster going to the world equivalent of the FBI to try to get out of the gang life, ending up in witness protection, and stuck in a position of Conflicted Loyalties with a friend who finds out and still prioritizes him and his family over past wounds. The crew being caught between a rock and a hard place with both places being government agencies variously either breathing down their necks or demanding the crew work for them (These are various examples from GTA SA, SR 3, and GTA V. All relevant, but none will dictate where I decide to take the game. At least not deliberately).

Re: Considering a "criminal sandbox" reboot

So in the interest of clarity, are 5 or have I miscounted? And are you guys OK with Adult? Nobody complained, but I've found that that doesn't always indicate complicity as much as obliviousness.

I've got no problems with Adult. It would probably make things easier -- to cover all the bases.
