IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

I'd like to set up a game where the players take the place of the college students/campers/horror movie victims while another player becomes the monster/ghost/vampire/etc...

The twist is that the characters are in a perpetual cycle of death/rebirth with the lone surviving hero becoming the monster of the next cycle. As it continues the characters slowly begin to realize what's happening and attempt to break the cycle and fight the true enemy.

I think the best system for this is probably World of Darkness with the different monster splats.

IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

The characters would fit the basic tropes of the genre, like in cabin in the woods. Those being:
  1. The Athlete/Warrior
  2. The Virgin
  3. The Scholar
  4. The W****/ Promiscuous woman
  5. The Fool/Sidekick

The players would also play a monster as well:

  1. Vampire
  2. Werebeast
  3. Ghost
  4. Zombie/Undead
  5. Slasher

In reply to Vane66 (msg # 3):

Those archetypes could almost be represented by Tarot Major Arcana for a bit more flavor...

I had a much larger list when I started writing on mine, based on the tvtropes Sorting Algorithm of Mortality I can see why you went with a smaller list having done that, and I even ended up scrapping those in favor of Advantages and Disadvantages. I call that 4th one "Ms. Fanservice" It's my favorite one. That's not character calling, just an observation.

This is neat, although I'd have to ask would someone who chose say, Basic Trope #1 be required to play Monster Type #1?

And lastly, do you have a system in mind?

Re: IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

Would Primetime adventures or something more story/drama based work for this?

Re: IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

Certain ones would fit better paired, such as the person playing the athlete and their second character be the Slasher, but it doesn't matter over all.

It will have some good conflicts so I want a system that can handle that.

Re: IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

Personally if you were to pair them up i would pair them up this way.
The Athlete/Warrior- Slasher
The Virgin-werebeast(there are several legends relating the two of them)
The Scholar(ghost)
The W****/ Promiscuous woman(vampire)
The Fool/Sidekick(zombie/undead)

Those pairings make sense but I think it's be best to allow the characters to pick their own pairings.

Re: IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

Yeah it's a comparison I've made. The monsters are up for debate those were just examples I came up with. I was going to list monster as well as werebeast but felt they were too similar.

I'm trying to think of other types of enemies on horror movies besides demon. Maybe a witch/wizard?

Re: IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

The wizard is just a bad choice unless they were extremely limited. Not only could they just exterminate everyone extremely easily but they would easily be the ones to foil any future plans as well.
Creatures like

Gillman, mummy, Frankenstein, invisible man, and a dream monster should work pretty well.

Re: IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

A Frankenstein type creature could work as Well, all of these are covered in the new world of darkness splat. I'm open to most creatures as long as they are different enough from each other that the players are satisfied.

Re: IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

This is so great of an idea and I am so behind it.

I feel like an ooze type would work. Like the blob or a horror from the lake type thing even. There should be certain things with each monster to go with different settings and goals for the tropes to be able to win or succeed.

Re: IC: Monster/Horror Movie game.

honestly i don't think that works for this game. i know about as much as i can create a character and be rejected and feel satisfied with myself.

It's a stretch but I'm not familiar with any other games besides world of darkness that portrays monsters.

I thought this concept was interesting but I'm not a big fan of World of Darkness, so if you end up going with Mutants and Masterminds I'll give it a look.
