IC - Boot Hill (2e)

I’ve recently spent a bit of time with some cinematic western favorites: Open Range, Silverado, 3:10 to Yuma, as well as a number of Clint Eastwood’s films, and had the desire to recreate a “classic” western tale as a role-playing experience.

I have a copy of Kenzer & Company’s excellent Aces & Eights, but had some concerns about being able to translate that game effectively into a play-by-post format. Recently, I was fortunate enough to lay my hands on a copy of the second edition of TSR’s Boot Hill. It’s an excellent take on the western genre, which really captures the drama (and lethality) of gunfights in dusty, frontier streets. The system uses percentile (1d100) rolls to resolve major actions, so it would probably prove easy for players that are unfamiliar with the game to pick up.

I also obtained a copy of Burned Bush Wells, a scenario which tells a compelling story surrounding a town that is a frequent stop on Colorado cattle drives. The authors have done an excellent job in supplying a colorful supporting cast, along with multiple ways for players to become involved in some of the intrigues that have ensnared the area.

All that being said, I know that traditional western stories definitely appeal to a niche audience, so I wanted to inquire if there would be any interest in such a game before I set about the work of setting it up.

I would be interested in such a game, although I would need some help with the rules.

As an aside, you might also consider "Sidewinder: Recoiled", if you can get your hands on a copy of the rules. It is a d20-based system.

Will this be a GM'd game with a story or is to be an open ended sand box where the players make the game. I have started in too ... way too many sand box games where the GM just wanted the players to talk. I am hoping for guided missions or adventures and such ? Just thinking out loud. ... :) ... Similar to my old BootHill game ?

I'm interested.  Would this be like Deadlands with magic or just guns, bows, knives, swords, dynamite,  etc

I can't speak to the OP's intentions, but Boot Hill is your basic Wild West adventure game.

I have the Boot Hill 3rd Edition, which I really enjoy however I asked my question because the GM hinted of other books he might use, so wasn't sure what the background might be since BH wasn't the sole source game content.  ;)

Should I move forward with this, it would definitely be a plot-driven game, not a sandbox. Burned Bush Wells tells a definite story, one that’s in keeping with the traditions of western fiction and cinema. That said, it doesn’t railroad the players with regards to their approach. There are a number of different ways to tackle the problems that arise and quite a few subplots that the protagonists can become entangled in.

For the record, I’m very much a fan of Deadlands. But this game would not feature anything supernatural. It would be a straightforward western tale.

Knowing that I'll throw my hat in the ring. Most western games I've seen do sandbox and im not a fan. It bogs down.
Give me a story and im there

In reply to Loughcrew (msg # 11):

Would you include the racial tendencies towards Blacks, Indians, Chinese, Mexican etc?  I know this is part of the Western history, just thinking of what I might play.

Just curious, thanks.  ;)

Re: IC - Boot HIll (2e)

Soulforge, I think your question has to do with some of the prejudice that was prevalent in some areas of the Southwest at the time. I’ll be honest, that wouldn’t be an aspect of the story that was given much attention. You would be welcome to play a character of any background you chose, but I would not be emphasizing any kind negative attitudes that were held during the period. It’s just not something that I would feel comfortable depicting.

On a broader note, if I do ultimately decide to go ahead with the game, it would definitely be after the holidays, probably in the first couple of weeks in January. Should I elect to press ahead, I’ll be sure to let everyone who’s expressed interest know.
