IC: WEG Star Wars

Now having been in the discussion for the two other WEG Star Wars threads here I know there is enough interest in WEG Star Wars. What I need to know is what interests everybody more?

  ---Tales of the Jedi period
  ---Privateer Campaign
  ---Clone Wars Era
  ---Rebellion Era
  ---Post-Endor Era

Other than the Privateer campaign until I have an idea where interest lies I don't want to give any details in a campaign. However if there is enough interest I might just open a game and sandbox the thing in a Rebellion Era.

So Era and broad campaign concepts guys.  Not terribly fond of Imperial Campaigns mostly because everybody wants to be Imperial Guard at the beginning and honestly you barely get to qualify as a stormtrooper at the beginning.

Of those options, I'd be most interested in a Privateer campaign or a Rebellion Era Campaign, either one would be awesome.

When I had my WEG books, they were all for the Episode IV-VI Era, give or take. I prefer that era, with Jedi being rare or very untrained and the heroes generally feeling desperate and hunted and salvaging what they could from periodic disasters.

I've never been in a TotJ campaign. Not sure if it would be my first choice normally, but that sorta throws it to the top of my list.

Man, was worried you'd close this down before I got to a computer to chime in.

I've got a character idea each for all of your proposed eras. Of them, my top picks would be TotJ, Rebellion, and Post-Endor.

For some broad campaign concepts:

Tales of the Jedi: A group of young adventurers exploring what is currently the Outer Rim run into some sort of war between non-Republic factions, and can't get back to Republic space without help from one of them. Politics, a war in the stars, the unknown, and possibly even fresh takes on the Force.

Clone Wars: A deeper exploration on the cultures of the Republic and the Separatists further away from the front lines, showing the people just trying to live behind the moustache-twirling villains.

Rebellion: I really wouldn't mind following the prewritten adventures already released for WEG. I've never played one, and that makes me sad.

Post-Endor: Explorers taking stock of the state of the Galaxy in the wake of the Empire's fall, maybe helping stabilize strongly-affected regions of space.

Hopefully that's the sort of thing you were asking for. Also hopefully they're good. :P

It hasn't even been a day. Not closing it just yet.

So far it seems about even between Tales, Privateer, and Rebellion Era.

I am not a huge fan of the modules as a GM. Gotta change a ton of stuff to make them work anyway. Mostly because folks read them and the surprise is lost. That being said I have a campaign in mind for each set wanted to see if you guys had anything specific in mind. While Post-Endor opens things up a bit I am going to focus on Tales, Rebel, and Privateer from here on unless Post-Endor pulls ahead.

Ok so campaign concepts since I only got that feed back from one of you.

Tales --> My favorite things about Tales were the Jedi vs Sith conflict and Mandalorians. We know the Jedi fought the Mandalorians at this time as well, but not a ton of details of this conflict are known. We fill that in some or as another option we do something like Knights of the Old Republic with Revan not knowing who or what he was.

Rebellion Era --> Two thoughts run through my head here. Rebel or Independant(We know independant is a myth, but the characters don't just yet)
Rebel campaign would be either fleet based or ground based. Fleet based would be something like Rogue Squadron. Ground based would be liberating a planet. Something like Bilbringi or a made up planet.
Independant would be a tramp freighter crew. Smugglers or otherwise.

Privateer --> Anti-Imperial or maybe something like the Corporate Sector.

I will admit I am not really familiar with the Tales era, never played it so that might be worth a try. The Jedi/Sith/Mandalorian aspects certainly could be a draw. There sounds like a lot to pull from, I just never read the comics so I don't have enough to really give an opinion other than 'willing to give it a go'.

Rebellion era I would say fleet based like the Rogues. Lots of options locals and changes if needed and a feel of being part of the 'real rebellion'. That said, planet based can be a lot mote in depth with steady growth of the setting, it cones across a bit grittier to me though.

Privateer I would vote anti-Imperial. Still have the rebellion frosting, but really a different taste and substance.  Different themes to build on.

While the post Endor is not may favorite setting, the Empire is still a mighty foe, lots of chaos and and options either Rebel or Independent. Plenty of themes to play with and locals to have fun with, that said I really dislike the Yuuzhan Vong.

While I would be interested in campaign, the Rebellion Era is what we all fell in love with. I think branmac was write on target with his points.

A ground game is the easiest to develop depth and growth which I like, but a whole Star Wars game on a single planet would seem like something was missing. A counter point would be if you can run a major storyline where we liberate a whole planet on rpol, I would call that a huge success.

A fleet based game could have lots of locations, but everyone is an x-wing pilot really puts a damper a good character blend.

A privateer game would give a nice mix of character types and the ability to planet hop when needed. It could have a very different flavor as our main adversaries as crime lords instead of the Empire.

All of the above have a huge appeal and would be my first vote.

Tales would be my second vote. Everybody picks a strange alien race and a bunch of force powers and is sent out to save the galaxy. What could co wrong?

Nothing would make me happier on Thanksgiving then to make a Star Wars Character. Thanks for deciding to run a game.

I've always wanted to play a pilot. I mean, if we didn't go with TotJ era (and there are quite a few reasons not to, admittedly) I'd probably want to play one. I have to admit I'm not a big fan of the rebellion - I've always been a supporter of (competent) authoritarianism, and TIE Fighters are just awesome. But.... I could accept an X-wing game if I had to.

That said, I disagree with kingjawa that a group of x-wing pilots dampens individuality. It's the player who makes the individual, not the type of ship they fly. That having been said, if it's a real concern you might try something like those Star Trek sims - basically you're all the crew of a [insert ship class here] and do your duties. I've always liked the idea for a Star Wars game personally, but SW players don't seem to enjoy the same things ST players do.

I'm not big on privateers games, personally, though they have their place. I much prefer an imperial, rebel, or smuggler campaign. I absolutely love the DarkStryder Campaign (well, in theory - I've never had the chance to play it all the way through).

I hope you get the game off the ground as I love WEG Star Wars! Sadly these sort of games - in my experience - seem to fill up quick and fizzle out after a few weeks. Looking at your ideas, i like the Privateer option the most; It allows great versatility in character templates and to be honest, you could plug in this one to the others.

"Privateers in Tales of the Jedi" or "Privateers in the Post Endor" for example.

I'm biased in this option because of watching "Star Wars: Rebels". They were independents but held together by a fundamental purpose to do good in their little neck of the galaxy - hell, they didn't join the Rebellion officially till the end of season 2 beginning of season 3

Not a big person of joining themed groups too much - all Jedi for example - because i like a little diversity in a group.

I remember WEG Star Wars so very fondly. I'd be tentatively interested, but I'm checking on the health of a few games first to see about time commitment levels so take my thoughts with a caveat.

Rebellion or Privateers would be my top votes. Liberating a sector would definitely be more interesting than liberating a planet--or if the focus is a planet, doing so by interacting with extra-planetary conflicts, etc. It's just not Star Wars if it isn't hopping exotic planets, if you ask me. Privateers would be interesting as a private concern focused on corporate or small-scale governments, but quickly getting wrapped up in the Rebellion because 1) the rebels are desperate and hire them, and 2) the Empire is leaving less and less room for them to operate (semi-)legitimately. I mean, if the Empire starts labeling them as rebels anyway...

I could see two ways to go with a ship-based approach. One, don't focus on the fighters but rather the capital ships, in this case probably a smaller capital ship but still big enough that everyone has a role aboard during action. The other approach would be to make it a Rogue Squadron-type group but just give out some starfighter skills as an automatic baseline for everyone. With only 7D to spread around, "starfighter pilot" would be a niche in a mixed group and take up most of those skill points, but if everyone is a pilot you end up with pretty much the same skill set across the board (or else incompetence as a pilot, also not fun). But if you just gave everyone a starting package of (and I'm making this up from old memory here...) 2D Starfighter Pilot, 2D Starship Gunnery, 1D Starship Shields, 1D Sensors, or something like that, and keep the 2D cap at char gen, then everyone can use their free points to focus on what they are other than a pilot. It starts the characters with extra skills, but with the 2D cap it's just extra breadth, not depth, and there are tons of skills to spread points into anyway.

In reply to Knight_Vassal (msg # 10):

Late to the party here, but count me interested as well! Love Star Wars and the old-school WEG system.

Am currently running a WEG SW ship-based/smuggler-type game right now that managed to stay alive several months now.

I likewise prefer the rebellion era, and would be most interested in the capital ship or squadron angle.

And I agree w/ Big Brother that having an all-or-mostly wouldn't necessarily create too much character homogeny.
(And that's not just because we're shipmates in other SWD6 games, haha.)

First I rarely start a group with 7D just not enough skill points for a real person in my opinion. Second seems rebel is pulling ahead barely of Tales at this point so I will likely set up both. We will talk about what we want exactly out of both games in those games.

Ok first things first as of right now both games are rated general. Not likely to stay that way. Probably going to wind up as Mature mostly because of language and well people dying.

Now you can apply to both if you so choose. At no point am I promising anyone any spots. Acceptance to the game is not a first come first serve basis. If I get a large number of quality applications I will run different segments or work something out so that all the good players can play.
