Traveller's Aid Society

After some discussion in Community Chat about possibly forming a Traveller Player's Guild, I looked around and realized I had enough game slots open I could easily support such  an endeavor.

I'm seeking input, advice, and counsel on what folks who play or referee Traveller (in any flavor) might want from such a "game".

My own take on it would be a place where discussions could be held on a variety of subjects related to Traveller, in all its incarnations, where folks could share tips, experiences, gimmicks, playing or refereeing aids, etc., but that's just me.  I want to hear what you all think.

The task of administering what I anticipate might become a very busy board would make it almost a foregone conclusion that at least one or two Co-GM spots would need filling eventually.  That way, we'd be death proof in case I got hit by a donut wagon or something equally silly.

What say you?

Nice one, horus, and what better title for it?

I think the primary benefit of a 'guild' like this would be to learn which Rpol members are interested in playing the genre, and having a forum where we can discuss, advertize and respond to game proposals without pussyfooting around all the site regulations that tell us we can't mention this, and we can't discuss that.

Obviously, as a General rated forum we would still have to use our fruits and pastries, but that's no hardship.

Otherwise, ideas for house rules, interesting weapons, equipment, people, places - a supplement to each supplement, if you like. Ideally, material that is suitable for all versions and all settings.

I'd love to help you out with it, but time is always a problem for me. If there was a little job that didn't require regular attendance, maybe.

I'm in. I'd be up for Co-GM at some point after the holidays, if such were still needed at that time.

Perhaps a subreddit-style approach, where every new thread's title needs to include a tag (GMing, Game Ad, Creature Feature, World Building, Variant Rule, Genre Bender, etc.)?

Is it possible to pin a thread to the top of a discussion board, without closing it? That'd be a handy way to maintain a feedback thread, including suggestions for new tags. Otherwise, a closed and pinned list of simple rules, much as the mods do for official RPoL forums.

I'm excited. After D&D, Traveller is my second love.

In reply to icosahedron152 (msg # 2) and to Martel (msg # 3):

{NOTE:  when I use 'game' in single quotes, I'm referring to the one I'm proposing now, not to any game or games we may discuss there...}

Hi, icosahedron152.  I'm glad you're with us.

Hmm... I'm not really looking to circumvent regulations, as it were.  I may be overly cautious in my thinking, but that beats crossing the line once too many when I should have known better.

Points I'm pondering:

I think honestly that all advertising of games should be rightly done in the Wanted - Players and Wanted - GMs topics on the up and square.  It's seductive to give TAS members a priority, but we also want to encourage new players to join in, too.

We might open a topic for discussing concepts or ideas for specific games within this 'game' as that would give us greater latitude to bat things around before having to field something, I don't know (I'd like it if that were the case, though).  Thinking of the way some topics in GPIA get moved to Community Chat, yeah, I think that's workable.

I'm a former submarine sailor.  One thing being in the Navy has taught me is that profanity and obscenity are the last resort of the unimaginative.  I would hope good Imperial citizens such as ourselves would be better than that.  I quite agree with censoring of words, phrases or concepts deemed offensive or forbidden per the RPoL terms of service.

All the topic ideas you mentioned (house rules, weapons, gadgets, people, supplements, etc. and especially etc.) sound great - the kind of thing that could breathe some new life into Traveller gaming here on RPoL.

I don't know if further discussion of this is proper, though, until we field this new 'game'.

I know what it's like to be crunched for time.  Help out when you can, at your own pace - there's going to be no pressure to post or perish here.  If you don't want to Co-GM, participate as a member.  I'd value your presence there highly either way.

Thanks, Martel.  I don't know that I'll be cranking this up until after the holidays, anyway, as I'm likely to be tapped for some serious overtime between now and first of the year.

I'm not familiar with subreddit, but we could certainly develop something of a style guide and a tag set for members to use to keep things organized.

Pinning threads here is a matter of making them into Notices. So long as Notices are kept open, anyone in the group they are posted to can reply to them.  (I truly wish RPoL could support sub-threads, though.!)

Folks, my main reason for wanting at least a couple of GMs is, as I said before, to "death proof" the 'game'.

Horus, I didn't see it as circumventing rules. The Mods don't want people discussing games on the public boards because they have to moderate them. AFAIK, they have no objection to people discussing games within a 'game' where the burden of moderation rests with the GM - I'm not advocating anything against the ToC.

New blood is always good, but if we can get a core interested first, it gives a game more chance, IMO.

But you make the rules for your forum.

I'd be happy as a 'silent(ish) partner' Co-GM to death-proof the game.

Yeah, I may have been a bit too ticklish because I made a lot of mistakes when I came back to RPoL after being away for about three years (I just had no time).  I re-read the other thread that spawned this one and see where bigbadron explained how private boards are.  That helped clarify things for me.

A game owner has to trust his/her co-owners, because they have equal power to make rules in all respects but one.  I believe from our past interactions we think much alike, and I can work with you.  My style is really more collaborative and consensus-driven than top-down.

If we get enough interest, yeah... this could happen.  I look forward to putting it together with all of you.

Re: Traveller's Aid Society

Also very interested.  I have never been able to play Traveller face to face, only online.  And having a centralized discussion board is great !!

Re: Traveller's Aid Society

Glad you are with us, Aslanii76!  I'll probably put something together sometime tomorrow after I get back from taking the exam for my Technician-class Amateur Radio License.  (Wish me luck!)

When I do, you will see a link to that 'game'.  One of the first things I will do after putting up the bare bones of the thing is post to Wanted - Players letting more folks know about it.

I'm sure the four of us (and gawds only know how many others out there) would like to see a vibrant Traveller community grow here.

Bye for now, everyone.  Gotta go study for a while before bedtime.

Re: Traveller's Aid Society

Okay... I decided to strike while the iron is hot.

link to another game

There's not much but a bare framework there just yet, but I kinda want it that way, because I want each of you (and anyone else who joins us) to have a stake in ownership, so to speak.

I'll see you all there!
