The Northern Passage

A wave of intense heat races across you as a massive, blinding flash of fire fills the room.  For a moment, the world is illuminated with the intensity of the sun, and then it is gone, leaving only the smell of sulfur and whatever small items in the room that were flammable.  Any of the papers you had left were almost completely destroyed and the few remaining books were badly singed, several still smoldering.  Daring to peer into the now opened hatch, you find a small, bleached bone wand resting upon a metal cradle.

OOC: Ondrea, Stoney and Larz take 6 hp of fire damage, while poor Boris takes 12

"Ahhh! God in Heaven! Help, help, I'm burning!" Boris screamed as he tried to put out the flames. As "stop drop and roll" had not been invented yet he ran blindly for the door, missed it and slammed into the wall, falling down onto the bed on top of the corpse. "Aieee! The demon-cursed wretch has come back to life and is burning me alive!"

Ondrea and her soot covered face tried to calm Boris while making sure she was also still not on fire. "Are you alright. Damn traps... I hate them just put a strong lock on your valuables."

Once everyone seemed to have regained their wits she took a closer look at the hole in the floor. "What do you think this is ? Some sort of religious item ?"

Stoney - While you haven't seen this particular item before, from it's markings, you're almost certain it is magical in nature.

OOC: Sorry for the delay, just started a second job and still trying to get my timing down.

Beating out the last of the embers, Boris whined, "owww... I really am in a lot of pain."

There were some moderately severe-looking burns on his face and exposed skin, and his eyebrows and beard were singed. Standing up from the bed he brushed off soot and bits of charred skeleton.

"Well this bone thing is definitely magical, but I have no idea what it is or what it is for."

Looking at the skeleton, then back at the bone.
"Ya I have no idea.  I do know I dont want to put it near that skeleton, just in case it reanimates into a lich."
Taking a long drink at that though.

"And the only unrevealed part of this temple, if that is what this place is, is the trapped tunnel we found underneath the table (or altar). I recall there was a set of footprints that entered it and did not return. We must therefore remain vigilant for not just traps but perhaps an assailant."

OOC: Not sure why you're laying a cow on Boris but it apparently worked XD

quote:
As you slowly descend the staircase, the strong, musty odor of mold crawls up your nostrils.  The carved stone floor is slick, forcing you to move slowly so as not to lose your footing.  The passageway itself is rather small, only a few feet wide and barely tall enough for Larz and Ondrea to pass through and still remain upright; at points both are forced to bend over in order to continue.  Unfortunately, the torchlight is not strong enough for you to see any possible end to the tunnel forcing you onward.

As you move forward you once more encounter the sinister spiked grate that nearly ended Larz' adventure.  The hole in front of it still remains open as well as the passage forward.

quote:
The hole itself turns out to be a sharply declined ramp.  The trap was obviously setup to drop one or two unsuspecting individuals down the ramp to some unknown, and probably unsavory, locale, then seriously hampering any attempt at rescue.  The ramp itself is carved from the raw stone and seems to be coated in a clear, viscous fluid.  Crossing beyond it should be no problem, provided no more surprises have yet to be sprung.

Boris snapped, "for the love of Christ, man, just get on with... wait... ohhh.... yessss.... say, that feels a lot better now! Many thanks my friend! Praise be to God!

"I had faith your healing would work! There is much worship of Pelor and other gods in Outremer. The Catholic Church of Outremer believes that the One True God often works His miracles through these other gods. As He is the wellspring of all that is good in this way His love may still heal His faithful and provide other miracles, no matter the source whence it is channeled. These gods are not false Gods or in conflict with Him, and are holy beings still above the angels and saints. In this way a Christian priest may still heal a worshiper of Pelor, and vice-versa, as long as they maintain their faith on their own heavenly sovereigns.

"Now, let us carefully proceed down the formerly hidden tunnel!"

Ondrea leads them down the stairs, but should Boris wish to check for traps first she will follow him down instead. Once they have bypassed the ramp Ondrea will be on guard now they have entered the unknown.

In reply to The Powers That Be (msg # 105):

Already, Boris was looking more healthy. Soot-blackened and raw skin had stopped weeping, replaced in places by patches of pink healthy tissue.

"Mind the ramp down to the obliette," remarked Boris. He was aware of such pit traps. Intruders and prisoners were deposited in such holes with no chance of escape, there to die, erased from sight and forgotten. (Hence the name "obliette".)

He carefully crossed the mouth of the ramp in the floor, intending to continue down the passage. As he moved he examined the floor of the cramped corridor to determine if the unknown individual they were tracking had fallen prey to the spiked grating and the obliette hidden below. He also examined the ceiling and walls as he went, looking for danger or anything unusual.

Following behind Boris, but not as surefoot as the other healer.  Which I might add is remarkably well spoken and adept at finding traps, doors, burning, etc.
