Be Still, Oh Silent Night

In reply to Ondrea Avalor (msg # 26):

Relieved at being in safety, Boris agreed he could help out at Ondrea's urging and replied,

"Miss Human! Er, or elf, maybe? I fink your right! One sling, comin' up!"

He shrugged out of his backpack and, from a pouch on his belt, deployed the halfling's signature weapon, a sling. He fished around for a sling bullet.

"Hey, see if the blighter will yield, yeah?"

OOC: I imagine Boris can get his first attack in next turn.

Be Still, Oh Silent Night

Larz begins backing away from the darkness, back towards the gate and the light.  The sound rises again, an unknown howl with a hideous hiss; this time it sounded almost like three separate entities...and it was growing closer.  As Ondrea gauges her next shot, a sudden pain raises through her elbow.  She looses her grip and the arrow sails into the distance, striking the road at the outer edge.  Spinning around all she finds is Stoney sitting in the dirt as the newest arrival begins to fumble in his backpack. Once more the howls rise, louder still in pitch.  From the darkness, three figures appear.

Larger and more muscular, these creatures looked like giant, twisted goblins of some sort.  Course, black haired fell about their shoulders offset by their bright red eyes.  In an instant, they locked their sights on Larz and charged forward...

OOC: (Boris) Yes, you will easily be up and running for the next round.

Letting the arrow fall Ondrea took another and notched it on her bow string while watching the larger beasts that have appeared on the scene. Drawing back her elbow it smarted as she loosed the arrow towards the closest of the giant goblinkin.

Her hand then took up another arrow as she gave a quick glance towards those on the ground before bring it to her bow. "Would the walls hold once these beasts were on them" she thought to herself.

In reply to Ondrea Avalor (msg # 32):

Hearing the growls and snarls, Stoney looks up from the dirt.  Not seeing the creatures fully, because the cover of night, he starts racking his brain to identify what the creature could be.  He had plenty of study time in the abbey, albeit he was bottles deep in the cellar while doing so.
"What is that?  I feel like I should know what it is."
Not wanting to let anyone down, he is scrambling to get back up to help his friends & the town.
"Larz!  Larz, retreat, lets finish them off from a distance!"

Rolled a couple times, not sure if d20 or % roll, so I did both.  To see if Stoney knows what the creature could be.
08:46, Today: Stoney Applesmith rolled 25 using 1d100.  know what the creature is .

Finding a ladder, Boris climbed up onto the parapet of the wall.

Once up there, he fit a bullet into his sling and began twirling it around his head in a practiced manner. When the three warped figures stepped out he almost faltered at the sight! Steeling himself he continued his windup, the sling gave off a whistling sound as it got up to speed. Aiming at the closest figure he released it with a cry, "Yah!"

04:04, Today: Boris Underhill rolled 6 using 1d20.  To-Hit with Sling.

Boris gets a natural +1 to hit with a sling but I don't think that will do it!

In reply to Boris Underhill (msg # 34):

Larzander continued his tactical retreat, if nothing more than to draw the enemy closer to the wall and give the archers and such a better chance to hit. Not knowing how fast the creatures were he was reluctant to turn his back and run. Running from a fight was not the barbarian way, neither was getting killed.

"Cover me, I'm coming in!"
Larz called to his friends, "I'll be damned if I'm turning my back on those things!..."

OOC: Larz will continue his retreat. Hopefully the distance fighters can score a few hits and slow them down a bit. If the creatures charge him Larzander will go into beast mode, which is his best chance of survival.

As the creatures lurch forward, giving chase after Larz, one of them takes an arrow to the chest.  It pauses only momentarily to inspect the wound, pulls the arrow out and continues onward, dropping the missile to the ground.  Boris' shot sails high but lacks distance and falls, without incident, on the roadway behind Larz.

Stoney:  Despite your extensive knowledge, you honestly have no clue what these creatures may be.  For clarification, the roll is a simple d20 vs. your intelligence, plus or minus any modifiers that would come up.

Larz:  I need a saving throw vs. Paralyze with a -4 penalty

Ondrea lets another arrow fly over the wall towards the lead giant goblin. Hopping to slow it or even change its mind, though the arrow it pulled from its chest that was lying on the road would say otherwise.

Ondrea Avalor rolled 4 using 1d20+3.  Attack.

She losses sight of it as it sails off into the night.

In reply to Ondrea Avalor (msg # 38):

Stoney pulls himself to a seated position.  Still behind the gates, but not that far in, watches as the events unfold.
Having drank, studied holy scriptures and tomes his entire life, he recalls a story from one of the old manuscripts.  A story where a most devout priest had called upon holy favor of his God to aid him in his quest.  Stoney was devout, and religious, just not to a single deity. He did study the life & works of Pelor, since that was the abbey he spent most of his time.  Under pressure, he would identify with Pelor, but adter a few drinks, it is God(S).

Muttering under his breath:
"I know you can hear me, and if so, please imbue me with your holy favour to aid my friend."
Now in a louder voice booming, almost too loud to be from his small frame, staring at the creature closest to Larz.
"You will listen to me me creatures of evil.  You can hear my voice, and you will sleep!"

Cast command on creature....command is to sleep
 Command (Enchantment/Charm)
Level: 1    Components: V   Range: 1"    Casting Time: 1 segment   Duration: 1 round    Saving Throw: Special   Area of Effect: One creature
Explanation/Description: This spell enables the cleric to issue a command of a single word. The command must be uttered in a language which the spell recipient is able to understand. The individual will obey to the best of his/her/its ability only so long as the command is absolutely clear and unequivocal, i.e. "Suicide!" could be a noun, so the creature would ignore the command. A command to "Die!" would cause the recipient to fall in a faint or cataleptic state for 1 round, but thereafter the creature would be alive and well. Typical command words are: back, halt, flee, run, stop, fall, fly, go, leave, surrender, sleep. rest, etc. Undead are not affected by a command. Creatures with intelligence of 13 or more, and creatures with 6 or more hit dice (or experience levels) are entitled to a saving throw versus magic. (Creatures with 13 or higher intelligence and 6 hit dice/levels do not get 2 saving throws!)

"Damn it! Come on, man! Run like the Devil is on your heels! Leave him behind!" Boris urged Larz to just bolt because it seemed like if he didn't he'd be overwhelmed. The large man seemed to be retreating but still trying to face his enemy. It's certainly not what Boris would do in his place.

Still panting from exertion, Boris reloaded the sling, twirled it around his head and released again. It looked like this shot would be worse than the last!

Both Ondreas' and Boris' missiles sail off into the darkness as the creatures continue to advance on Larz.  Just as the closest is about to reach striking distance of the fighter, it's eyes slam shut and the creature collapses face first into the dirt.  Captain Rasmir orders the towns' guardsmen to advance just beyond the gate and take up positions to either side.

OOC: Barring the one that is down, the creatures will be on Larz next round unless he attempts to turn and bolt off

Scrambling to his feet, and astonished that his prayers appear to be answered.
Excitedly shouts!
"Did you see that?  The power of Pelor is mighty!  All dark enemies will cower fade under Pelor's light!"
Grabs a small smooth water worn rock from his pocket.  Loads it in his sling.
Begins to spin it around and around, eventually raising it over his head.
"Thank you for answering my prayers lord.  I see you dont give up on those who stray from the path, slightly.  The lives of my new found friends are important.  Please guide this rock to help defeat the enemies of the light."

When the sound gets right.  Vroom...Vroom...Vroom Releases the rock.
Flies through the air, and strikes his target with a thud, squarely in the chest.

Ondrea shifts her aim to the next creature lumbering towards the wall. Letting her arrow fly she hopped it would serve as a distraction so the fighter could get behind the gates. She picks up another from her stack and notches it on her bow string.

The stillness of the forest was shattered as Larz releases a war cry the likes of which most anything living has not encountered.  Racing forward he smashes into the lead most creature.  Narrowly dodging it's long, dark claws, he lays a long, deep gash across the creatures upper torso.  It staggers backwards from the force of the hit, black liquid pouring forth from the fresh wound.  As it begins to regain its strength for another attack, it suddenly lurches forward as if its' feet were stuck.  Just to the creatures right, the previously injured monster also appeared to be struggling with movement.  Out of nowhere, a small stone smacks into the creatures chest.  It pauses from its struggling and looks down where the stone had landed, then back upwards toward the gate with an expression of confusion...an expression that changed rapidly as another arrow lodged deep into its abdomen.  The arrow was buried too deep this time for it to simply remove it and it appeared to be deeply effected by the shot as it buckled to one knee.  The third monster, still on the ground, also appeared to be struggling to regain its feet.

Ondrea was heartened to see the monster go down, even if it was onto one knee. For what ever reason her concentration was lost and the arrow she let fly again missed its mark. Reaching down she retrieved another and had it up on her bow.

Ondrea was muttering something under her breath as she again looked out along her arrow over the field before her.

In reply to Ondrea Avalor (msg # 48):

Having given himself to the burning bloodlust that flowed through him like a tidal wave Larzander continued his assault without concern for his own safety. His mind only let him see the enemy before him and nothing else mattered.

Growling like a beast himself Larz swung the sword in his hands wildly at the nearest beast. The there was a feral viciousness in the blow. Unfortunately the attack lacked accuracy and missed its mark. Missing only seemed to further enrage the barbarian warrior. Righting himself, he caught the beast solidly again with his back swing.

Suddenly Stoney is a very vocal advocate of Pelor, which moments ago you would have never known he was even religious, other than his clothes.
Shouting out
"Power of the light will prevail!"
Whirling his sling around his head for another attack.
Vroom...Vroom the sound of the sling becomes louder
At the right time, he releases and the stone flies out so fast your eyes cant detect where it went.  Or it could be it went so far off it's mark.

The warriors blade retraces its' path across the monsters body; black liquid spraying into the sky as bones crack, giving way to vital organs.  It collapses to the ground without uttering a sound.  Before he can recover, the second wounded beast rushes forth, flailing its claws through the air.  The first strike lands across Larz' face but his wits had returned and he easily avoided the second strike.  The third creature was now regaining its' feet...

With no clear shot Ondrea aims for the third creature that is just now getting to its feet. She lets fly, but it would seem that her luck had deserted her and Ondrea's last shots had been well off the mark. In this case she had not taken into account the distance and the arrow fell well short.

It was time to join Lars on the field of battle so he was not facing two foes alone. She grabbed the top of the palisade with one hand and her hammer with the other as she prepared to jump to the ground.
