Is there a way to browse the galleries other than through the Character Description screen?

Not at the moment, no.

Portrait updates have been done for the month, and the below table shows the updated galleries.  All additions can be found at the end of the category.

A reminder -- portrait updates are done (roughly) once a month.  This is the only notification given as to where portraits are located -- I no longer do individual emails because of the time it takes, the frequency of getting my emails bounced back, and the irritation of having my IP put on spam lists by people and/or their email providers because I'm responding to their emails.

Does the update inclue adding tags to the old pictures?

I am not adding tags as a part of the update process to either existing or new submissions.

There are a few people working on tags when they have time.  (I am occasionally one of them.)

Well, portraits are generally sorted according to how they appear, rather than who the character really is.  I don't know who Rukia is (don't watch Bleach), but someone, somewhere along the line, apparently thought Rukia looks like a male businessman (in a lot of cases, the person submitting the portrait suggests where the portrait should be filed, although that doesn't always end up being where they end up.)

Yep, I'm afraid "Rukia from bleach" doesn't mean anything to me, and probably not to the portrait editor (though she could surprise me :-) ).  It's all based on looks, rather than actual identity.

roger that. guess if you look at her right, and you think business men should have thick hair, she might look like one. :) gonna be up all night re-evaluating what my favorite pics could look like to other people. anyway, i guess sorry for the original post since it's not very revelent to the thread in general, and it led to this little side thread. anyway... thanks for the info.

I've made a couple submissions in the last couple months that weren't added, and a couple that were...not sure of the difference, if they didn't go through or were ignored and why; any way to find out?

You are allowed one submission her updating cycle.  If you submitted more than one portrait in a single cycle, only the first one will be accepted.

Could it be that you ran afoul of the limit on the number of submissions?

Basically if you submit one or two portraits in a month, then they will both be considered, and one may be added*.  If you submit three or more in a month, then they will all be rejected.

*Edit: Not necessarily the first submission.  Quality of the image and subject matter are considered.

Ah, bother; I thought it read three somewhere.  I guess I'll submit it for a third month.

And just to sate my curiosity, any clue why there are no member managed avatars?  This is just about the only board I've ever been on that won't allow that, and probably the one that could most use it.

It's because we prefer to maintain some control over content and quality.

Additionally, the people who actually pay for the portrait servers, and let RPoL use them for free, prefer to have some say in who actually has access to them.

Also considered is whether or not the same (or a very similar) image has already been added.  I know a few years ago there was a minor problem with duplicate images (I saw some in two or three different places).  Just because you've found THE perfect image for your character doesn't mean it hasn't already been posted on behalf of someone else...

Which is, I would guess, part of the reason behind having all the character portraits posted by administration, rather than by individual members.  Some people can't be bothered to actually verify that the image they want isn't already part of the database...rather than go to that effort, they'd just post it again elsewhere.

Ah, I didn't think storage of 100x100 pix would be much of an issue: props and thanks to whomever does that for us, then.  Still, for feedback, it would be very nice to be able to have our own avatars - I can understand not being able to store them here, if the server thing is an issue, but there are plenty of places that can be imbedded without trouble (photobucket comes to mind, for instance) and without any strain on the rpol servers.  It seems that would be a win-win to save you guys a bunch of effort and lead to a more satisfied membership.

It's not as much the storage as the constant access.  More space is easy, more bandwidth is expensive.

Not really saving us any effort, because then we'd have to be on the lookout for inappropriate images in games (rather than just rejecting them during the submission sorting process).

As I said above, we prefer to have control over the content of the portraits.

If you have the perfect image, I suppose you could embed it at the top of each post. Of course, subject to other rules and requirements.

Another thing to consider - are you sending it as a link or an attachment?  submissions with links are not opened or considered, even if they make it through my spam filters.

Are you looking at all the updated categories?  It may not have gone where you expected it to go.

Are you sending the email with a title and text along with an an attachment?  If not, your emails may not be making it through dual spam filters.

Is it a copyrighted image? (any submission with a copyright symbol needs to include permission to use).

If you are sending more than one email with submissions in each, I choose the one to use.

1) DISNEY images can NOT be used in the gallery -- Disney doesn't grant permission for their use on other sites.

2) Please do not send more than 3 images per cycle (of which we will accept a maximum of 1).

3) Send submissions as attachments -- please do not embed them in the email or send links to images hosted elsewhere.

4) Updates are done more or less monthly and a notice made in the forum here when the update is complete.  This is the only notice given when submissions are accepted.
