Friends list

Is the idea of a friends list something that the site has that I've missed/ have thought about/ have considered/ have rejected/ have started to work on?

I keep meeting fantastic people in games that the GM bails on and eventually the game gets archived and now those people are gone.
It's happened like 3 times in the last two months and I have started keeping a list on a piece of paper next to my comp but that seems like something that should be able to be put into the user account section.

This is an idea which has been proposed in the past, but it is not something that RPoL will add as a new feature.  There are already a number of places where you can keep a list of your own (scratchpad, account autobiography, in-game PM, for example).

You can simply ask people for contact information (user name, etc) and create your own list.

Note that RPoL has a strict privacy policy, which means that we will not give you a means to track people across games, or know when they are/were online, so any list that we provided would be just that - a list of names (exactly the same as you can create for yourself).

What about something like an rmail quick contacts option?  It wouldn't allow you to track players, but you could manually add users to a list in rmail, so when you went to send an rmail you could select from the dropdown list.  I don't know how complicated this would be to add, but it sounds simple enough and it would be a fairly reliable way to keep track of people on the site who you want to keep in contact with, as opposed to writing a list down elsewhere and possibly losing it or keeping it in a scratch pad where you also might lose it if that particular game goes away and you forget to copy the list elsewhere.

It's not a 'friends list' per say, but I think something like this might satisfy people who would like a friends list feature, and it would make it easier to keep track of RPoL contacts without breaching the privacy policy or requiring a big, complex addition to the site.

That wouldn't be, really, any different from keeping your own list and just copy/pasting names into an rMail.

Note that, as mentioned above, the scratchpad isn't your only option for keeping a list.

Friends list

As BBR has alluded to the issue with a friends list is that there's no way to automate something while retaining anonymity in games.  You can't click on a character and add the member to your friends list.

We may have backed ourselves into a corner with this whole anonymity thing but I think it's far more a boon than a hindrance.  I realise there are some people who don't care about such things and would rather have more of a.. hm.. social approach to friends/contacts/chatting etc.  I'm happy to investigate these things as long as it doesn't distract from the core of the site and is a deliberate opt-in to enable.  But at the moment there's so many other things to do that will enhance what's at the heart of the site (RolePlaying) that I find it hard to justify spending time on something that's going to save you writing a list!  (c;

Keep in mind that something like this will take about as much time for me to implement as things like;

I've cherry-picked the requests that will take about the same time, others will take (a lot) more time, some actually less.  I'm not trying to dishearten you or suggest it's a no, but what I devote my time on is a balancing act.  At the moment it's all dedicated to a responsive site version, and once that's completed then there's a huge outstanding list in the RPoL Development forum.

Friends list

 Form my games? the  folks who want to   get together  in other games and such, normally just  as in a PM to the other player, and  get an E-mail or FB name.

 I think its better this  way, were folks  can come in and be  their character    and Player without , over exposing.

 Having said this? The Players  who stay in my games, seem to form a bond, and we'll have  all kinds  of RL news  and such among us, that doesn't effect the game, and does..indeed..lead to  folks  getting e-mail addys  and keeping up the friendship out  side the game.

 Right now?   You have to get that information from the player...and that's how it should be.
