[1.01b] The Old Light

The ruins of the Old Light are hard to miss. The original height of this tower is unknown but the ruins that remain are nearly 200 feet tall. It is built into the face of a 120' tall cliff with the tower extending another 50' above that level to culminate in a ragged ruin. It appears to be a crumbling shell of ancient design and yet it is still standing, jutting up above the rock and waves in open defiance to the ravages of the ocean air, winds, and time.

[1.01b] The Old Light

One of the local carpenter's, Jodar Provolost, is set up near the Old Lighthouse with a barrel full of training bows and arrows. At 15, 30 and 50 yards are hay bales with targets tied to them. The targets appear to be some sort of winged monster with large bat wings and a fire-breathing horse's head.

A sign nearby reads:
quote:
Archere Contest
2 Shots = 1 copper
Fabulus Prizes too be had!

"Step right up! Come defend Sandpoint against the infamous Sandpoint Devil!"</red>

Whenever anyone walks by he starts up a carnival barker's pitch to them.

"You there, come step up and take your shot at defending the town against this monster! Ladies take the middle target and fellas take the far target."

He grabs a shortbows in one hand but holds out the other for the copper pieces.

OOC: Make a shot with a bow! Roll to-hit as normal. It is AC 20 to hit the bullseye, 18 to hit the first ring, 16 to hit the second, 14 to hit the third, 12 to hit the fourth and 10 to hit the board at all.

[1.01b] The Old Light

Closer to the Old Light is a dwarf next to what appears to be a miniature catapult. It stands about two feet tall and the wooden beam has been crafted to look like a giant's arm with the throwing stone in its "hand". About 20' away down range is a pile of stones stacked into a pyramid shape.

A nice sign with clear, legible blocky script sets the rules and stipulations.

Come Knock Down The Old Light
2cp = 3 shots.

OOC: Unless you happen to have proficiency in engineering/math/siege weapons (spoiler, you don't :P) using the catapult is an untrained attack. You get three rolls and your goal is to get three "hits". AC 12 counts as 1 hit, AC 16 counts as 2 hits, and AC 20 counts as 3 hits

Kaddock heads up to the lighthouse point and gazes at it with awe.  He heads over to the man set up with arrows and targets.  "That lighthouse is impressive who built it?  And is that devil based on a reality that lurks nearby?"

In reply to Jodar Provolost (msg # 2):

Talitha approaches the man and hand over a court coin.
"I'll give it a try!"
But she's clearly had one beer to many in the tavern.
She laughs at her poor accuracy.
"At least I hit the board!!"

Jodar smiles as he takes the coin from Talitha and laughs as she barely hits the board.

"Oh no! The Sandpoint Devil is gonna tear up the town now! You want to try it again, maybe a be a better hero next time?"

He flashes her a friendly wink. When Kaddock asks the question he just shrugs.

"I ain't no scholar or nothing but it's been there forever just crumbling into the sea. I'll tell you who built it, some old dead fool who thought it would last forever. Heh."

Faeli goes wide eyed as she is offered the opportunity to defeat the Sandpoint Devil. She rushes to the barker's side and offers him 1 copper.

"I'll take a shot! That darn devil will not know what hit 'em"

Faeli rolled 11 using 1d20+1 with rolls of 10.  Shortbow Attack (Untrained) with Dex Mod applied.

In reply to Aesrick Battlehorn (msg # 3):

Seeing her next distraction Faeli rushes over to the dwarf's side. "How much?" she paid the 2 copper and listened intently to the rules of the game and then went to the machine.

She thoughtfully looked over the machine Walking in front of it, examining it from the side and then walking in front of it again.

"Okay, I think I got it." After he first attack goes wide the gnome grimaces and then smiles to the dwarf. "Sorry..." she adjusts her mathematics mentally and lets fly her second attack which also goes wide.

Faelie giggles maddly and shrugs her shoulders and then with one hand over he eyes she pulls the level for her third and final attack-and hits.

The gnome opens her mouth wide in shock as the rock lands. "I hit it! I hit it!" she exclaimed.

Jodar tips his head, nodding approvingly.

"Aye, that'll do. The Sandpoint Devil's been slain! All hail the mighty hero!"

He rolls his eyes as he delivers the line but the smile on his face makes it clear it is all in good fun. He opens up the chest next to him and pulls out a small fruit pie that is still slightly warm to the touch.

"Courtesy of Ms. Avertinz from Sandpoint Savories."

She smiles as she sees the kids devouring the pie in an unhealthy short amount of time.

Faeli's first couple of catapult shots go wide but the last one is a solid hit. Unfortunately it leaves a couple stones standing.

"Aye, tough luck lass. At least ya win a partin' gift."

Faeli doesn't get herself a sweet new slingshot but she does get a little mechanical contraption. A couple of pieces of wood with a hinge, it seems the only purpose is that if you shake it back and forth the wood flips over clacking against the other pierce forming a noisemaker/clapper toy. It might not be expensive but it is quite loud if shook hard enough.

"The Sandpoint Devil has been slain, keen elf. Take your prize!"

He reaches into the box and pulls out another small fruit pie.

"I guess what they say about the elven archers isn't just a myth...although you didn't quite hit the bullseye now did you?"

He grins to let her know the gentle ribbing is all in good fun.

"Well perhaps that is a testament to the quality of the bow rather than the skill of the archer."

From behind Arialis appears a well dressed aristocrat or merchant. His clothes alone look to be worth a fortune and yet he seems to be walking around and enjoying the festival the same as anyone else.

"If you'd be so kind I wouldn't mind a chance to slay this Devil."

He hands over the copper and picks up the bow. He tries a few test pulls before swiftly letting loose a pair of arrows. Both of them end up clustered together in the center of the target.

Jodar stares slack jawed and a few passing townsfolk pause and stare at the sudden display of archery. Suddenly the focus of attention the well-dressed man flushes a little and shrugs sheepishly.

"I noticed it pulls a little to the left, that's all. Beginner's luck."

Like Razyll when he gets his pie he quickly passes it along to the next family he sees with a tip of his hat and a smile.

"It is not always about hitting the bullseye, but hitting the target and your grouping." She said with a chuckle and a smile to Jodar as she retrieved her prize. Then like both Razyll and the nobel she will walk over to one of the families, she will look for one that appears to be at the festival but cannot afford to play many of the games, then offer the pie to their children. "Here you go. A gift. Would you like to fire the little catapults?" She asked the kids.
