[1.02] Party Crashers

The young priest looks noticeably abashed at the reception set up for him. He wears the traditional ceremonial robes of a priest of Desna and a shiny silver holy symbol about his neck. He smiles and tries to calm the crowd down, eventually speaking when the applause has subsided.

"Thank you. Thank you Cyrdak. And thank all of you for coming to join us on this most Holy day. Today ushers in the new Fall season. A season I have always thought was named appropriately, as today was the day Desna fell from the heavens during battle with Lamashtu. Though all the world wept for the loss of the goddess, in truth she survived. She was discovered on the rocks of a beach by a blind orphan, forgotten and cast aside by the rest of the world. Though the orphan didn’t know who she was and could do little for the wounded goddess she still stayed by her side holding a vigil on the beach tending to her as best she could and praying to her god, Desna. When other followers had abandoned Desna, the orphan empathized and held hope in her faith. Through the care of this orphan Desna recovered and revealed herself to the blind girl. In return Desna transformed her into an angel and offered the girl ascension to Desna's palace in the heavens. It is now there and forever that they shall remain."

Father Zantus motions toward the newly finished cathedral, the sunlight glittering off the stained glass windows.

"This story reminds us that tragedy is just a setback, not an end. Though our place of worship was destroyed and our previous priest, Father Tobyn, perished in the flame we have preserved as Desna would desire and built anew. Today is our day of new beginnings. Our day of ascension. Friends of Sandpoint, I declare the Swallowtail Festival officially..."

[1.02] Party Crashers

His speech is interrupted by the crack of thunder. It reverberates through the air, echoing off the buildings around town. Instinctively the crowd looks up trying to catch sight of the rain clouds but the sky is clear and blue.

There is another blast of thunder, and another. The lightning strikes should be right on top of the crowd and yet the air is still clear. Confused the crowd starts drifting apart trying to figure out where the source of the sound is coming from.

A little boy calls out from the crowd.

"I saw something! I saw something! Over there!"

He points towards a nearby merchant stall. Several guardsmen draw their weapons and cautiously approach. More thunder cracks out from around town and the crowd of townsfolk begin to panic. Some are whispering that the gods are displeased, probably with Cyrdak's comedy routine, and have cursed the town.

Just then a figure emerges from beneath the cart, an old stray dog that had crawled underneath the stall to sleep out of the sun. Even with the sound of thunder continuing to blast around them the guardsmen relax, laughing and resheathing their weapons.

Then the screaming starts. The dog collapses onto the ground and a pool of blood starts to form out around it. Then the smell of smoke hits the air, a smell not coming from the cooking fires. More screams start to echo out around town in between the blasts of thunder that continue to strike the town.

"FIRE!"

And then another voice from around the corner

"WE'RE UNDER ATTACK! ALARM!"

Another blast of thunder drowns out the next few screams but finally it subsides enough to hear it clearly.

"GOBLINS!"

Faeli's heart jumped into her throat at which crack of thunder which sounds around the village but when the cry of "GOBLIN" rang out, she was drained of all color. The gnome's eyes darted nervously around the crowded area but all she caught was the midsections of most of Sandpoint's townsfolk.

Perhaps this was a good thing? Faeli though, her mind grasping for advantage against foes which she knew to be treacherous, cunning, and ruthless.

Perhaps I will be able to see those little monsters before they cut through the crowd. Faeli thought to herself.

That is, if I do not get trampled first...

Talitha was enjoying the different speakers and how they were mentioning one another. It was clear that in Sandpoint the people knew each other enough to make inside jokes with the whole town. That was nice, bit she least her small village to look for adventures, so it was still early to think about settling down in a place like this.
She was entertained with these thoughts when she heard the shout. "Goblins!" She should worry about the civilians around her, but she couldn't help but draw a smile in her face. She'd spent to long in the road with no action, so this would be a nice change.

And obviously, the best way to defend these people was with a strong attack. Win-win situation.
She looked around looking for the creatures, but so far her sword and shield were not yet in her arms, and that was a problem.
She hoped she would have time before they stroke.

Tristen was a bit disappointed that he didn't get a closer spot when the speeches began. The disappointment dulled when it was apparent that a stage had been created for each speaker. He joined in on the humor and clapped with the others. He appreciated that the sheriff reminded the crowd that law and order would be maintained during this celebration. He craned his head and viewed the people that made the crowd. Each were good town folk and farmers. Abadar blessing would surely bless Sandpoint and its citizens.

He was ripped out of his silent prayer with the crack of thunder. He looked up expecting rain. But quickly realized it was something else as one town folk after another gave shouts of alarm, until someone finally shouted.

"GOBLINS!

"There! To the east! Three of them!!"

Kaddock enjoyed the games and food and had taken advantage of many of the booths and exercises of skill or luck.  He was currently munching on a stick holding roasted meats and vegetables as he listened to the speeches with amusement.  The ways of the city peoples were different  but he felt a growing bond with the friendly and enthusiastic people of this town.

When the cracking of thunder ripped through the town he looked about warily and moved closer to his erstwhile comrades.  As the creatures swarmed out into the town he called out as well.  "Goblins!  Goblins!  Get the women and children to shelter!"

[1.02] Party Crashers

The goblins pull out crude and cruel looking pieces of jagged metal, dogslicers as they often call them, and leap forward cutting into guards and townsfolk alike. All of them begin to take up a song, discordant and chaotic, as they begin their deadly work.

"Goblins chew and goblins bite
Goblins cut and goblins fight
Stab the dog and cut the horse
Goblins eat and take by force!"

Three goblins charge in at the two guardsmen to the north. Luckily their chainmail seems to take the brunt of the attacks but the goblins still draw a bit of blood.

To the west the goblins pounce on a young man trying to run away. Two goblins each grab his feet tripping him allowing the third to scamper up his back and slit his throat.

To the south instead the goblins use their daggers to cut down a young girl, stabbing her repeatedly as she falls to the ground.

The crowd screams and panic ensues. The only seemingly safe place to flee to is towards the Northern gate and that is where the crowd begins to surge towards.

OOC: Initiative order is
1. Guards w/ 22
2. PCs w/ 18
3. Goblins w/ 15
4. Civilians w/ 10

Round 2
The guards drop their crossbows and pull out clubs, striking at the goblins who bounce around, ducking and dodging their attacks.

Round 2
Talitha draws her giant sword and swings but the goblin ducks backwards, stumbling flat onto its back and her swing goes high. Faster than she can bring her sword back to bear, the goblin scrambles back to its feet and readies itself to strike back.

Faeli pushes her way through the crowd and unleashes her spell on the goblins. Her sparkles catch the goblins full in the face blinding and dazzling them.

Razyll draws his shield and sword and pushes his way through the crowd.

Tristen draws his sword, running down a goblin and piercing its chest with his sword.

Arialis rushes forward but her goblin sees what is coming and dives to the side avoiding being skewered.

Kaddock fires his arrow but with all the civilians running around his shot is spoiled.

Townsfolk begin fleeing all around trying toe escape the goblin's deadly attack. The musicians stop playing and flee to the north, the Sheriff draws his blade and steps in front of the mayor and other dignitaries and creates a safe bastion for commoners over by the front door of the cathedral as the cleric tries to unlock the front doors.

With only one road as a safe exit though the townsfolk quickly get bunched up into a tightly packed mob as too many people try to squeeze out along the road.

"Everyone, hold! Don't panic, stay calm!"

The sheriff is trying to maintain order and prevent people from being injured from being trampled by the panicked crowd.

Round 3

In the south the goblins are slowly shaking off the effects of the spell.

In the North the goblins all go into a scurry chasing after the crowds of civilians and hoping to escape the blades and clubs of seasoned warriors in favor of easier prey. They scatter among the crowd but there is quickly a cry as one of the goblins jumped on the back of a traveler and stabs her repeatedly in the back until she collapses.

To the West the goblins keep shifting around and both of them end up stabbing at Arialis. Teaming up against her they overwhelm her defenses and she ends up taking dozens of tiny stabs that start to really add up. A slash at her hamstring here, a stab into her abdomen there. If she was a lesser fighter it would be likely that overwhelming attack would be the end of her.

OOC: The two goblins end up dealing 13 piercing damage to Arilias as part of their team-up attack.

The two guards chase the goblins into the crowd and while they take a few swings with their clubs there is too much chaos fighting among the civilians and the goblins avoid taking any strikes.

[1.02] Party Crashers

Round 3
Razyll moves up and cuts down a goblin still stunned by Faeli's blinding blast.

Faeli flings a plate and knocks the goblin at O6 unconscious with a solid hit to the brainpan. She looks around for Koya but doesn't see her. Thinking back she didn't think that Koya had left her spot in the market further to the south and was likely busy with goblin raiders in another part of town.

Talitha crosses, chasing down a fleeing goblin and nearly cuts it in half.

In a blur of steel Arialis cuts down another goblin, flashing blades and burning anger turning the goblin into chunky salsa.

Tristen slices down another goblin, taking the time to retrieve his shield.

The last goblin, penned in by the guards, is shot down with an arrow through the chest by Kaddock.

For a brief second the din dies down as the goblins lie dead or dying (except for one blinded goblin wildly swinging its dog slicer around in the air. There is a pause as the crowd collects it collective breath and things seem to be turning in their favor. The priest unlocks the front door and the crowd starts pouring into the new cathedral and while there are sounds of fighting and fire coming from throughout Sandpoint the local area seems clear.

...then the chilling song starts again.

"Goblins race and goblins jump
Goblins slash and Goblins bump
Burn the skin and mash the head
Goblins here and you be dead!"

From the now abandoned food tents in the south comes a group of goblin commandos who had been crawling into position for an ambush. Now popping up to sing their song and brandish torches. Four goblins armed with dog slicers spill out, two heading for Faeli and Razyll while the other two are heading for the now screaming civilian crowds again.

Two more holding nothing but torches also appear and in the middle of their "formation" is one that seems to be leading the others in their song.

Round 4
The blinded goblin flails about wildly and while it ends up bumping right into Kaddock none of its wild swings come close at all to hitting him.

The newly arrived goblins can see and are much more keen on inflicting damage. One warrior each rushes up to engage Razyll and Faeli. The one facing Razyll slashes upwards with its dogslicer but Razyll deflects it with his shield.
OOC: Warrior O5: A1: Move A2: Attack - Miss A3: Attack - Miss.

The other goblin runs up onto the buffet table, kicking aside trays of freshly cooked meats and bread and it charges down and does a flying leap into the air at Faeli. It lands onto her shoulder using its dogslicer to dig a horrible gash into her shoulder and down her back as its weight slides it down opening a gaping wound.
Warrior M11: A1: Move A2: Attack - Crit! 8 damage A3: Attack - Miss

Meanwhile two more warriors dive into the crowd, cutting down townsfolk as they flee for cover inside the cathedral. They start stabbing with reckless abandon and two more festival goers are cut down like wheat in the field.

The goblin singer spills out over the food table onto the ground near Faeli and somehow manages to keep its wretched rhythm.

"Chase the baby, catch the pup
Bonk the head to shut it up
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed
We be goblins! You be food!"

To conclude it's stupid song it fires an arrow at Kaddock but buries it in the dirt at Kaddock's feet.

Warchanter K11: A1: Move A2: Goblin Song A3: Firing bow @ Kaddock - Miss
Razyll and Faeli are distracted by the goblin song and take -1 to Will saves for next round

Finally the two torch wielding goblins get into position. One of them reaches into the torch and pulls out a ball of flame. It cackles wildly and then throws it at Faeli before tossing it right in her face. It catches her hair on fire as it bursts onto her.
OOC: Pyro L12: A1: Move A2 & A3: Produce Flame - Crit! Faeli takes 3 fire damage and will take 2 more fire damage next round.

On the other side the other goblin torch bearer puts the torch up to his lips and blows out a jet of flame that engulfs several of the townsfolk still trying to crowd through the doors of the church. The sheriff is also engulfed but thanks to his armor and shield he is able to block most of the flames.

The guards both move back down to engage the new goblins but fail to connect with their clubs. The sheriff likewise steps forward to eliminate the goblin pyromancers but he swings wildly due to his eyes being seared from the flames.
