OOC Thread

Greetings one and all. What do we have? What do we need? Yngvar the Mad here. I can post everyday, many times if needed. I might miss a day every now and then due to doctors and such, but I assure you I'll be here. If I have a problem and can't play, I will inform you, I don't ghost. If we get along, we might have years of fun ahead! Housejohnson has a game with 171,000+ posts, so he's here to stay too!

Dungeon Master:
With the number of players joining I may be running two campaigns in our little city.  Otherwise there will be twenty seven of you trying to accomplish the same goal.

Verily, I care not how many games thou mayest run, Dungeon Master, but let it be known that the recovery of my stolen property is of utmost importance.

Thank you DM.

Wizard? Fighter? Or Fighter/Wizard? Sounds like there is a rogue, a druid. Is there a cleric? I usually play humans, but could play an elf Fighter/Mage.

Re: OOC Thread

Hi all, looking forward to gaming with you! :)

No firm plans about much yet classwise (I have a character idea but beyond 'adventurer' it could fit any class) though I had been considering thief. What do we have so far?

I rolled 14,14,12,15,10,13. No amazing attributes but not a bad spread.

But above average, decent for AD&D! Sounds like it might be two parties. I'm trying to figure what is needed too.

Re: OOC Thread

Right now no one knows what is needed.  Just make whatever you want to play and I'll figure it out, or we will figure it out together.

Basically somehow it will get figured out.

Re: OOC Thread

Can't say what other people are doing, but you've got a Paladin in me.

A corrupt city you say? It is the corrupt place that needs light the most.

I've played Paladins in every edition, though, so I'm pretty good at not being a jackass about it.

...I've also played Jedi and Samurai (L5R) for fun, so I'm pretty used to codes :)

I'm not Xenk, after all. I rather like my jokes and puns, among others.

Greetings. I used to run them, I hate the codes though,  more power to you. I go generic now. Easier to RP! ;-)

Re: OOC Thread

Was just looking through my PHB again, it's been awhile since I perused it. Multi-classing slows progression so much as it has to be divided, but it is a serious option, I got very good rolls on my character, so it opens options. Elf, Half-Elf, maybe something else. I first got AD&D mixed with D&D thinking there were caps on demi-humans. I play everything a far as versions, sometimes I get confused!

Availability - I'm online from approximately 4:00am to 6:00pm Eastern Time, I'm in Pennsylvania. I respond between those hours, I check the boards at least once an hour as well, so you won't wait too long for a reply.

In reply to Yngvar the Mad (msg # 32):

I saw your question before it was deleted, the answer to that is yes, we will be following the book rules for demi human level caps.

Unless someone can make a decent case against it, I know it was intended to create balance but I do not have a lot of experience with how it works in practice.

Re: OOC Thread

In reply to Dungeon Master (msg # 34):

I've never seen the practical side of it. When you play together a lot and the demi-humans cap out, the party becomes less fun, unbalanced as there are weak characters trying to keep up with increasingly powerful human characters.

May I suggest the following: Impose a 10% XP penalty to slow down advancement when they hit the cap to balance out demi-humans. It works and is a reasonable compromise. A lot of people simply ignore the cap, though.

Re: OOC Thread

If this game continues long enough that caps become an issue, we are blessed indeed. Especially if we're starting at 0 XP and level 1.

Re: OOC Thread

So I'm now strongly considering Magic-User for Rowan. I've guess I've been spoiled by 5e though since the idea of relying on one spell a day is a little terrifying. :)

Re: OOC Thread

Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards. Wizards who survive bend reality. Warriors just have +5 weapons. Or a Holy Avenger in my case.

Re: OOC Thread

I'm almost certain it was designed for balance. In 1e you can be an 11th level fighter, or a 10/10 Fighter cleric. A 12th level magic-user or an 11/11 fi/mu etc. It's hard to say no to all those levels in a second class for the sacrifice of just 1 level in your own without some sort of fee or cap.

Importantly, it disadvantages single classes who really only had unlimited progression going for them.

I also agree that the chances of one of us reaching a level cap is slim.

I also agree that if someone did reach a level cap it would detract a little from (but not ruin) their future fun.

My best guess for a balanced approach that would fit the bill is the following:

1) remove all level caps, AND
2) remove all bonus xp (for high primary stats) for all classes, AND
3) give single classes a flat 10% xp bonus.
