Wiki and Images

I'm having trouble with using images in a game's wiki. I know the img src code. I want to use rpol portraits next to their characters on their pages. When I do this, the images are there for awhile. A day. A few minutes. Then I come back later and they're broken. Is there something different to using an image from the portrait server on the wiki?

TIA

Nevermind. Worked it out. Thanks!

Hi Eggy,

Having the same problem - link to char portrait in my games wiki works one minute then broken the next, but they're displaying fine on the main site.

What was the fix you worked out, as I'm not getting anywhere fast !  :>

Cheers

Try going around the problem: put the image somewhere else, and link to that one.

  1. Right-click on the portrait, and select "Copy image address" (the exact phrasing might change between browsers).
  2. Go to imgur.com, create a new post, and paste the URL into it.
  3. Copy the address from that, and use it for your image link. (You may have to add a '.png' to the end.)

It may be the hotlinking, if you're trying to use pictures from RPoL's portrait gallery.  I know I've got my hosting set up to disable hotlinking except for certain sites and while I've got exceptions for RPoL built in, I have to have the exact addresses excepted.

Does the wiki use something besides rpol.net  (like wiki.rpol.net, for instance)?  If so, I can add an exception to see if that works, at least for the Male portraits.

Sorry. I don't remember what I did differently and that game and it's wiki folded up. They're gone.

I added wiki.rpol.net to the hotlinking allowed list for male portraits.  Let me know if that didn't help.  I'd check myself, but I am wiki illiterate and content to stay that way.  :-)

Aaand ... yup, male portraits are now viewable while female portraits still not, so that was it, thank ye kindly, Shannara.  :>

Can you set up hotlinking permissions for the female portraits server too, please.  Bet you were planning on doing that anyway once the test results were in !  <grins>

Thanks, LonePaladin - yes, that was my next move (using Google Drive to store them).

Talking of which - I also had trouble displaying images from Google Drive, but found the following syntax on the interwebs which seems to do the trick, if it's of any use to anyone else:

<img src="http://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=<IMAGE ID FROM GOOGLE>">
