Well - if you give them to all your players, rather just doing their advertising for them, I'll join your game  :P

Sadly, I don't know for sure if they're available on platforms other than android.

Re: Wiki Preview Issue

Oh, you mean electronic stuff, not the cool metal dice they sell.  Now I am disappointed, I imagined you with some really cool manual dice rolling systems. Shame.  I was getting some excellent visuals ...

I must admit,  I have never understood why people go off site to use digital dice rather than use the excellent dice roller that is built into RPoL.  *shrug*

In reply to JohnB (msg # 18):

In all seriousness, I don't, I was just going off the joke that had been running when I chimed in. I probably would use it on my discord, but I have a roller there too. I mostly use it because it's a "dice shaker", and it's fascinating to see the actual movement of the dice.

Ok.  My bad.   Although I do like the DnDice metal dice  :)  Mind you they are way to expensive for me :)

Re: Wiki Preview Issue

I'm not sure if I should be surprised that an app and a physical dice company use the exact same name, even to the point of capitalizing the same letters. I'm leaning toward no. In other news, that's actually a deal where I'm at. We don't have many gamer stores.

It seems, and correct me if I'm wrong, that where you are has internet. You can buy a pound of dice for about as much as a set of the metal ones.

I also have a couple of pounds of dice.  But that doesn't stop me getting the urge to buy more if I see a particularly nice set.  =)

Some people collect works of art, others consider a nice set of dice a work of art.

Nope - I run a tabletop Pathfinder game as her Birthday treat. A few of our mates come down and we play Friday evening to Sunday lunchtime, which gives them all time to get back home for work on Monday :)  It is the same bunch of guys each year - it started off with individual games, turned into a short campaign, and last year started up a long term campaign -  I have the next ten years planned out (in broad detail).

Ron - Ari now has so many dice we have to keep them in a set of matching boxes.  And we will probably need to upgrade this year ....

Re: Wiki Preview Issue

Right, let's see ...

I do use our Wiki - to cut a long story short, lost access to my old webpage where the background info for one of my games lived, so currently converting it all over to the Wiki format.  Surprisingly painless process - had to do a bit of minor redesign to workaround the loss of frames, but more than happy with the results.

Didn't know any other sites out there had an electronic dice roller and don't care overmuch. The one on RPoL is all I want.

Got a BIG box of dice (100+ of 'em) in a cupboard somewhere around here.  NOT buying any more, no matter how pretty or shiny or lovely they are.

Oh my gosh I have been collecting dice, since the boxed set, and I have so many dice. Have you seen the brass ones ? those are pretty nifty.

I feel that exact same way about horror films' prevalence of female upper torsos. Or really horror films in general.

Can someone tell this dinosaur what a wiki is, what it does, and how it can be used to improve a game?
I know the facility exists, but I have no clue how it works or what it can do for me.

Re: Wiki Preview Issue

A wiki is just an easy way of creating, sharing and storing information on the web. Wikipedia is a fine example of a wiki. I have used wikis in a few different ways to help my gaming.

At one point I used to build social systems for NWN persistent-worlds, which were a built as a collaboration of people all over the  (real) world.  In that case we utilised the co-operative nature of wikis.  One of us would start a wiki page and the others would add their bits to the page until we had the whole picture.  We also used bulletin boards  hosted on the same site to facilitate discussions between us - but that is pretty much the equivalent of an RPoL game thread or private message.  So the Wiki worked as a design tool.  This is one that harks from a few years back http://eots-pw.wikidot.com/home

I started supporting my tabletop and RPoL games with digital material some years ago - and kept that on a website.  I had maps, descriptions of area, details of what you could buy in the store - and it developed as the game went on.  I didn't document a town until the party went there - so it was all new to them (and me half the time :)   However, by the time they went back a second time I gad published notes about the place - and they knew what to expect.  It helps me keep my game world consistent, and means my players don't have to try and remember things from (real life) months ago.  In this version most of the work is mine, with less input from others -  so it is more like a website than a co-operative wiki.

This is an example of a wiki that supported a tabletop game - http://new-haven.wikidot.com/
This one supported my 3e D&D world and was used for two different games on  RPoL  http://urgon.wikidot.com/

I got fed up with all these different wikis and started  to pull everything together by in a single  Game Wiki covering my house rules, acting as a hub for other games material and supporting games that I run.  TBH, it doesn't work as well as I would like it to - mainly because I didn't really know what I really wanted at the time.  It is due for a revamp / redesign soon :)  his one is just a straight website replacement, with a forum.  As you will see, the forum effectively finished when the  game finished and it has become pure website :)

And I am sure there are many other ways that other  people use the

It's not notably different than what a lot of people do with their game's background info as it stands. But instead of a big long thread with a bunch of posts you can have a page for each topic and have them easily hyperlink to eachother.

So I'm basically using them as an organizational tool.

Can you upload images to it from your computer, or do they have to go via an image host like the threads, or does it not take images?

Re: Wiki Preview Issue

You have to host your own images (unless I missed an upload thing somewhere), so it's pretty much like the way it works in threads. If you want to see some examples, rmail me and I can throw some links your way.

Re: Wiki Preview Issue

With the RPOL Wiki you need to host your own images, although some Wikis allow you to upload images and incorporate them directly into a wiki page.

Re: Wiki Preview Issue

Thanks guys. Pretty much a cross between a website and an organizer, then.

Your examples are external wikis. On Rpol, do you have a different wiki for each game, or can information (such as your favourite rule set) be displayed for several games?

I think this would be overkill for most of my games, but there is one that might benefit from linked information pages, and I have another in the pipeline that might benefit, too.

Re: Wiki Preview Issue

Your rule set page would be in one game's wiki, but there is nothing stopping you from linking into it from a different game's page (you would just have to do it like an external link rather than using the double brackets).

Can't see any issue with it myself.

You can create an article anywhere but there are specially reserved areas for the GM to create an article (or articles) for a game.  These are restricted (by default) to GMs only, whereas the rest of the wiki defaults to open.

So yes, there is the ability to have a different wiki for each game, but it's not mandatory.
