Taking over as DM

I am not sure if this is the right place for this or not.  We lost our DM over a month ago and I was wanting to take the game over.  Could that be possible?

Maybe, but not yet.

First the GM has to be totally absent for at least three months, and the game must not be flagged for sole ownership.  Also, you have to already be a co-GM.

Then you rMail us, and if everything is okay, then we will transfer ownership.

What about games that already have been deleted but are still on the board? Can they be assumed as well?

Then, please do not purge those games now in Deleted status until a fair warning after that time.

Actually, we consider that their "deleted" status is a fair warning.

Note that a game flagged as "deleted" might not usually be purged from the site for several months.

So then no way for you all to put someone else as the GM even after 3 months?  Interesting...

No, we don't promote anybody to GM status, ever.

In reply to L0st S0ul (msg # 7):

You always have the option of recreating the game (as a new game) with a new GM and abandoning the old one completely.  Copy/paste is tedious, but better than losing the game completely.

Hmmm there are WAY too many posts to copy paste including PM's as well.

How do I know if it is sole owner?

If the game has been flagged as sole ownership, the if you click on the Game Info link, on the page that appears it will say:
quote:
The GM has marked this game as containing personal and intellectual property.
If the GM leaves or deletes the game nobody else will be able to continue the game.

So he wasn't sole owner, that is good.  Now if I wasn't co-gm then I still can't do anything?

In reply to L0st S0ul (msg # 12):

Apart from copying what you need to a new game, no.  Note that you probably don't need to copy the whole game.  And the other players can copy what they need from the PMs.

Okay thanks.  Just a suggestion, I think there needs to be a way to hand it off to someone if the GM isn't sole owner and has been away for so long.  Thanks for your answers though.

To give a little more information -- GMs have access to all PMs of a game and we view promoting someone to GM status to be a privacy issue.  We facilitate you to run games as you feel fit (within reason, of course) and don't interfere with the running of games.  If a game owner does not have any Co-GMs with access to all areas of the game then we will not contradict those wishes.

I realised this can be an inconvenience when a (sole) GM suddenly disappears, but I firmly believe this is the correct way to conduct ourselves and administer the site.  Basically we won't forsake our own morals for convenience.

As for deleted games, that's a recycle bin / trash can.  We keep deleted games for quite a while (the more posts in the game the longer we keep it, up to 12 months in fact) but at the end of the day it's still in the dumpster and you shouldn't be surprised if we take out the trash from time to time!
