However, inside the thread, the most recent message number is #858... I suspect (but have not confirmed (because 800+ messages)), that this discrepancy is due to deleted posts.  Is this how the message number vs reply count works?

Correct - messages don't renumber to account for interim deleted ones - apart from other considerations, if they did renumber then any manual links to specific messages would break.   :>

... and to confirm using this thread, which has considerably less than 800 msgs <grins> I just deleted my test msg #4 which should give a message count of 4 (original and 3 replies) and latest message no of 5.

Don't ever want to have to recalculate unique post numbers.  Uggh.. **shudder**

Also remember that if a player deletes a message the GM can still see it.

So, of course, if you want to delete a scurrilous, drunken comment you made to the GM, first edit it to remove its contents, save it, and then finally delete it.  :-)
