In reply to BabsME (msg # 2261):

I too have been in that kind of situation years ago of lied gender and their motives behind it. It hurt deeply and while it's a hard lesson for us, it makes us stronger in the end. As a lesbian myself, I have come across many men in the world who spit out the usual "but if it was me, you'd change your mind" blah blah blah crap as they usually say. While yes, there are men who are handsome as I like to use, women are my forte and are the most beautiful creatures to have walked the Earth.

I hope whoever hurt you also finds the one for them and perhaps one day, they'll learn to be truthfully from the jump and not hurt someone else along the way.

Why, oh why, does the temperature have to drop twenty degrees AND the forecast include rain RIGHT ON Halloween?

Thanks, weather gods. Maybe you can come explain to my child why their costume suddenly can't be worn as planned.

Do you have a local Shopping Mall? Many host Halloween trick-or-treat events. Indoor, dry and warm events.

Letting go, even when said person(s) is ultimately destructive to you; is very hard.  Even when we know that we should remove said person from our life.  If there's a legal (written) agreement involved, look for a loophole.  Otherwise, put the person on notice that you're kicking them out; and be prepared to suffer the lash-back, usually from people who'd end up having to deal with them once you're not.   It'll be rough for a while, but ultimately worth it.

Cracked my toenail on my bed sheets and it hurts! Tried a bandage. Tried a band-aid next. Wrapped it in bandage and put a hair elastic on it. Now I'm just waiting, with it bare, if I can clip it off. It's going to tear if I put on socks or just go to bed...

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 3

Does anyone else get a silly bit of social anxiety just before pressing the 'Request for Access' button?  I don't know why I do it.  It's like every game just has to feel 'perfect' and at the same time I feel I want to have the 'perfect' character for a game - even though the history of rpol is such that these things rarely align.  Am I just worried about committing to games?  Or maybe doubting my ability to string sentences together to a high standard?  Who knows...

@Bazhsw I wouldn't worry about perfection, just applying to a game you will enjoy with a character you'll enjoy playing is usually all that matters. A game only works if the players and GM are working together. I'd rather have a group of players that can commit over someone that has the 'perfect' anything.

In reply to drew0500 (msg # 2269):

*ditto* I am on the opposite end of "perfect", being nearly useless as a GM. Often times the RTJs that are "perfect" are not good fits for my game. Those that are and get in, lose interest, they have high standard I can't meet as a GM. I prefer players that come somewhere inb the middle. They aren't using RL lingo in character, or describing a detection spell "lighting up like Christmas tree" but I also want my players to be people, flawed, in pursuit of fun, some bad grammar, but ultimately just good-natured, and forgiving; of me, of the other players, and of themselves. I have gamead professionally for a scant few years in my life. When I did, it was just that, a profession, and it was work and labor and a service for my clients not for me. I couldn't make minimum wage, for how seldom I did it throughout the year though, and demand was always low.

When I GM or play, I expect it to be a free to play, and so get what I put it in minus 20% to 50%. I find players or GMs that exceed double my capacity will outstrip my a participation, and the opposite is true too. If someone is operating on my very leisurely pace as half that pace, then they're going to get overtaken and overwhelmed.

That said...ALL that said. Yes, I get nervous when I RTJ as a player. I worry most about GM killing my character in a RTJ, or the seldom occasion a GM is antagonistic or mean. Getting accepted is always a deep sigh or relief but also "it's go time": kind of stress, like getting accepted to a part time job or a cast of play; I know by being accepted, I now am part of a greater system and I have to do my part. If I don't get accepted, I'm bummed, but am relieved that when new games come up that I RTJ, I'll have the time to commit to them. So yes, it's anxiety inducing, but I internalize both acceptance and denial with a certain level of anxiety for those reasons. My real fear is always that a GM will punch down. It's happened a few times, and even once made me leery.

I suspect that you're having a problem that I've had primarily in free-form games...mistaking post length for content.   I've touched on this subject rather recently myself; so it's fair to say that it's probably more common a concern than most of us realize.

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 3

In reply to Hunter (msg # 2271):

Quite the opposite, for me, at least. I favor short posts over long. Though I tend to be verbose even at my briefest. I had to GM for many years to learn what you're talking about. I've had GMs that had word count limit, and I did it, but no longer. Same idea as a plumber being paid more for one hour of work than the "better" guy who does the same job in three hours. The one hour plumber deserves more money, not the same. So in the case of posting, I try to focus on what I'd read as a GM. That's how I learned less is more. I have the same problem with RTJs.

It is as problem though. I'm more worried about grammar, ASD confusing the world genre, assuming GM knows, or is even using, something from an established setting, etc...

However, yes, I am verbose. *chuckles* That isn't confusion though. I'd shamefully aware of that.

A movie rant, no real spoilers involved.

Dear Rebel Moon.

Die in a fire for baiting-and-switching me with your advertising leading me to believe this was a multi-part ensemble film only to waste two hours of my life to find the best part of said ensemble unceremoniously removed in probably one of the worst-handled plot kinks ever put on film.

You could have done this well. You could have avoided lying to me in all the press. You could have at least wrapped up the plot hijinks -somehow- even if not well.

Instead, no, you wasted my time, and made me sad. I hate you so much right now, Zack Snyder. (And I say this as someone who actually prefers the Snyder cut of Justice League...)

In reply to SunRuanEr (msg # 2273):

Oh my! Yes! I didn't get the press in my hovel under a rock. ;) I heard the backlash though, and watched a spoiler (\which I won't recount here). Yeah....I'd be pissed off if I had doubts, and then wanted to give Snyder the benefit of his other works. I retroactively got shown the timeline of the press and outright deception and misdirection to "counter" that.

I'd be SOOO mad if I was on board that trainwreck.

I get attached to characters and plots that have SOO much potential, and then just light a match to that and make you want to throw gasoline on what they left pristine and putrid.

I remember a T.V. movie as a youth that was about this mystery of this man's wife getting abducted by high school criuminal, it was so emotional...and then the wife turned out, in literally 5 of the last 25 minutes was NOT commercials, and the wife; with no explanation, no warning, no freakin' foreshadowing, no rationale, was in on the abduction, that she had picked high school stundent because, ya know, they're IMMUNE for being minors, and then bizarrely (the ransom videos of her were shot with her in this big locker) she put the husband in where was held and they locked it. Then it ended. The maybe 45 minutes of actual plot of a commercial bloated 90 minute TV movie, was really good, and the only character you liked was the husband, and because he loved his wife, you cared about her too. Yet, nope. He's just dumb. The wife  character even said that. I was SO enraged.

That's the best analogy for what I imagine it was like.

Gah!

So I'm playing Scrabble on my phone during my lunch break and I'm in the last third of the game vs the computer and the tiles hand me the letters O, D, S, T, R, E, I....wait a minute that's STEROID which as a 7 letter word is a 50 point bonus!
But to my immense frustration, there's no where to play that word on the board!!

I have kept the faucets dripping. It is -7 F and the toilet in take pipe froze. It is so cold in the bathroom, the toilet brush froze to the floor. We called maintenance, but all they did was give us a heater. My anosmic roommate is pouring water in the toilet bowl to have some humanity, but this unethical. So we're launching a service issue in the morning. We already did last night.

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 3

Growing up in the Midwest, I was generally unaware of maintenance dangers like water pipes freezing in cold weather. My father just took care of it and never mentioned such things to us kids.

I bought an 8-flat in the inner city at 30 and had to learn the hard way, with an unheated 2500 sq. ft. basement. I knew about the dangers of propane torches, having visual evidence of fire from previous residents and/or owners. Nevertheless, I had to learn of the various vulnerabilities in the ground, the walls, and the ceilings. It helped immensely that lots of old men hung out at a local heating company and could offer advice and assistance when I had hard questions and issues. Thawing out pipes with fire is a skill like any other, just requiring care. My most challenging winter activity, however, was rodding out a frozen sewer line at -25. That took 23 hours.

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 3

Well, my place is scummy. They have an unfinished part of the underside of the vanity which goes to a gaping hole in the wall. It's theri fault for not a.) taking the initiatve when we told them this in freakin' June, b.) not then, come November and werather was still okay, installing the vnaity underside wall 3.) using, at this point, the heating, like you said, to unfreeze the pipe. It's going to burst and then run freely, and they are just acting like "we'll just put a space heater by it" when there's clearly a blister forming, and they called a plumber. The plumber is going to chew them out, I know, because it is a very preventable issue, he's going to take one look and say "What the hell?! There's your problem! Why do you dumbhats have this giant hole" Ugh I dunno! Dumbhats.

This place is scummy. I risk even violating my NDA the case manager advised I sign. That is another issue.

I was evicted due to my roommate's negligence back in February 2022, so we had TWO evictions that were consecutive, leading to us being here. Anyway...I'm not mentioning apartment complex, because if I don't I'm unlikely to violate my NDA, but it's better than being te car or a hotel room for $2,200 a month. I did so much just to get here, and it's nightmarish..

And winter is doing a seriously good job of kicking my ass this year.    Not only is the cold feel colder than usual (to the point that I have to actually turn the thermostat up higher than an other year) but my depression picked the same time to drag me back down into the mire.

Ugh.

Seriously people, if you're going to ghost a game - ghost it right. Don't log in, don't check posts, and most certainly don't go and read the PMs that the GM sent you because they were worried about you and hoping you were okay without bothering to even say 'Thanks for checking on me man, but I'm just not feeling it anymore'.

Like, do you somehow think that NOT sucking it up and saying that you're not feeling it is going to make the GM think there's any other reason for your absence than you deciding to quit?

Re: Vents with allowed responses - 3

In reply to SunRuanEr (msg # 2285):

I agree ≈100%. One user I know I'm truly worried for if Karack. I name drop because, to be discrete he has huge problems. As in one being a loss of job he needed, and another, as serious as it sounds, brain injury. I have been grieving like I knew him, because he shared his life, like I do. I didn't know him well, but I felt like I knew him enough to know that if he died, or had to BE hospitalized, that I'd want to know. I kind of keep this lump in my head another arises in my heart and gut when I think on that mental lump. So yes, that is the right thing to feel if someone doesn't log in, you worry. I'm not saying it's wrong to l eave it casual only, but yeah, if you care about your players as seeking friendship and comradery, you want to know that that is worthwhile, or especially that when they don';t log in, it's a failsafe that let's you know, okay this not flaking. They have place when they come back, if they want to.

On the main ghosting though, which to fair, we don't know how much so, but it IS the majority of these people. I seriously hate giving non-updates (I'm usually GMing and right now exlcusively). but when I log in, I may not read all posts, so I'll give an update. Players ghostign sucks, but a GM ghosting is, for me, just horrid, because you have to wait, like Karack for me, to breathe, or you have to see they post in another game and just scoff in disgust. So I am actually very bad the other direction, giving "non-posts" to let players know, why and how I'm on the game.

For players, I have a few acronyms, one is TBTP, Too busy to post. It's actually an acronym I forget, sadly, and wonder wtf, but it's at least a clue that the player made the bare effort. I also welcome players telling me "I want to quit" I don't guilt them. I don';;t take it personally, which on an aside some players are offended I don't "try harder to keep" them. Which is absurd and I think think the reason, however ill practiced, players don't admit, hey I'm just not interested. I let my players take indefinite breaks. I don't do "milestone" XP in games that are like that, but I do consult the players as peers, not subordinates, and decide with the returning player what's fair. Sometimes players will get a gift package even, to show they weren't just not punished, but missed!

Anyway, I hate ghosting. Especially when I make it very clear my players have three options. Post content, post that you're on delay from days to indefinite, or quit. Otherwise I take control, eventually of their character when they log in, repeatedly and don't even put a single word. Literally. Just "Busy." is better than nothing. It's vague and terse, but it shows the bare minimum. I may still remove them if they never give more information and they have history of other games' problems, but pretty much I'll just put them on hiatus.

Anyway, as far as it goes for me. I am guilty of not posting when logging in. It's not often, it's not rare, but it's seldom a case where it's twice ina row, and never thrice. I will, however, occasionally log in, read and RL just pulls me away, and I have no indicator to rem ind me, oh yeah! They're waiting on ME! I realize this, when it happens, when I log int to check hwy it's slowed. I can't do anything but apologize and move forward. If it's twice in a row, it's because the second time I KNOW I need to post, and RL just pulls me away. Literally a friend of neighbor or the appliances need immediate attendance. I always come back the next time with a buffer of someone to cover me, and make sure unless it's life or death (which thankfully it never has been) I post SOMETHING.

My own vent is this though. I had a birthday in  2022 I had planned to get myself a get together and invite a few people. In that year I was evicted and became homeless, and found out so many people on RPoL were friends and not justy buddies, but unfortunatewly so, so, sooo :( so many local people weren't friends. In 2022 I spent my birthday in a car. In 2023 treating my roommate. In 2024, it looks like I have to choose my movem, and ither way a piece goes off the board, as chess reference. These two videos really sum up the words I don't have, the thoughts I can speak, and certainly can't write. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...p7O-pwOM&index=1 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ3a2gvLcvQ

Next vent is my Parkinsonism. I take HAldol, and I knew this was a risk. I take Haldol for TS (Tourettes) and it's the ONLY treatment. PArkinsonims, if you (not just you Sunruaner but anyone) doesn't know, it's the umbrella un der which (kind of weirdly) Parkinson's Disease is under but most other Parkinsonism can be "cured:" because they aren't inherent/genetic/et cetera. It's from an outside controllable source, and can, often be lessened and sometimes reverted. I have the option to let my tics, which are in their own way life threaening, one I have under the surafec is getting sick, to put it lightly, another is head banging, only against a surface. So parkinsonism is better than that. One day it might not be, but it makes writing even harder, The tics still are there, but now the parkinsonism is too. So I might have to quit RPoL and writing in general.
