Has anyone used Fuse or Daz? Any thoughts on whether either one is worth trying to learn for doing some character images?

I've used DAZ.  Love it!  However, I haven't used it in quite a while as my PC is old and isn't able to handle the latest version of DAZ, but yes, I highly recommend it.

Did anyone use MakeHuman?
It looks good, but very general purpose, in that customization is impressive, so it may need some tinkering to get everything right.
Extra assets include clothes and body parts (elfy ears, lizard tail, dog head and whatnot).

I like DAZ but, man, the items, morph and textures really add up moneywise.
And it seem if I just want a skin texture I have to pay an arm and a leg to buy a whole character set.

A outshoot of Makehuman is the MB Lab which is actually a free add-on to free 3D program Blender and originally made by one of the designer of Makehuman.
Blender, just released it newest update, v2.82.

Granted Blender is not nearly as friendly as Makehuman, and does not have all the possible (paid) additional clothing items that DAZ has but it and MB Lab is completely free. (and changing skin tone is pretty easy)
Another downside is while MB lab works well it is still in development.

Did I say it is free?

On a related note, does anyone have recommendations for 3D animation software (like what you'd use to create a space battle between two ships)?

I've got a short film I wrote, and shot, that's been on the shelf for years because the friend who was going to do my CGI work keeps getting caught up in other projects...and he's also stylistically drawn to big, majestic ships, not small and agile fighter craft, which is what I need.

What springs to mind immediately is some cool videos I've seen shot within the game "Elite Dangerous" (which has ships of all shapes and sizes), but that has the obvious limitations of being someone else's IP so I don't know if you'd be able to use it for your own thing...

There are, however, a great many places where you can get free (and legally so) items, morphs and textures for Daz (and other programs).

Personally I use Poser 10, having won it in a prize draw a couple of years ago.

I've tried Daz (and a few others - I'm looking at you, Blender, Bryce and Hexagon) but always come back to Poser and Cinema 4D.

For finishing off a picture, I use Paint Shop Pro and PostWorkShop.

Yeah...I need to be able to put specific ship designs into the animation, not borrow what someone else may have available in their game.  Since the sequence sets up a story that follows, there are specific details that must take place in the sequence to set it up properly.

Could always "film" something in a space game (Elite Dangerous was just an example, since I've seen some crazy-good story videos filmed there), and then edit over the ships with your own art? But I suppose that's what you're looking for, right? Something to draw your own ships in the first place...

Well, there are digital models for the ships I wanted to use (it's a Star Wars fan film, there are all kinds of digital models for Star Wars ships online).  But by the time you chase down a space-age game, stage the necessary battle, and then go back in and edit all the changes with the other ships, you're getting into territory where it would be easier to just animate your own footage from scratch in the first place.
