Free RPG - Symbaroum Corebook free until Thursday Jan. 30

Just wanted to do my civic duty to the gaming community and pass this along to everyone.

The Symbaroum RPG Corebook is free on DriveThruRPG until Thursday, Jan. 30.

I really love the setting of this game. The rules are fine (not great, not terrible), but the setting is honestly amazing. Modiphius always puts out high quality work, and Symbaroum is no exception.

Here's the link for those who are interested:

I downloaded the book earlier today...

Is it really good? I remember thumbing through it in an online shop and I got the impression the game is... depressing?

It's very dark fantasy, so it certainly can be depressing. Probably one of the best things about it from my POV is that the setting is clearly written and designed to be easy to game in. Plot hooks abound, and they do a great job of clearly presenting different angles and opportunities for characters to insert themselves into the world even if you don't want to follow the written story adventures.

I will add that much of the setting material is gradually unveiled in later releases, which can be a bit frustrating at times. On the other hand, I've never felt like I wasted my money buying the sourcebooks and/or adventures.

I haven't played with the actual mechanics so I can't comment on them beyond saying they look reasonable from what I've read. I would be happy to run this game for newcomers to gaming in lieu of D&D, personally. I think the mechanics are more straightforward and it has a lot of setting material that is easy to understand and accessible. Admittedly, I mostly use the setting for a Blade of the Iron Throne campaign I'm running.

All that said, it was free, so there was really no reason not to download it. =)

The setting is good - the mechanics need some work.

There are far too many talents (or whatever English term they've used - I've played the Swedish language version only) that let you substitute one attribute for another when making rolls. In particular, there is pretty much no reason to not dump the Accuracy attribute and spend those points elsewhere, as there are a multitude of talents which allow you to substitute other attributes for particular subsets of weapons (and the value of attribute points in general is so high that it's always worth the trade).
