I had no idea this even existed - I managed to watch it to the first commercial but the cringieness stopped me from going further.

I've watched the whole thing twice.  Once when it first aired (I was 9).  And, once on streaming last year; just to torture my own children........

I was 7 when it aired, so I didn't notice the cringeworthiness back then and had just recently seen Star Wars in the movie theater, but it certainly has earned its place in Star Wars infamy. Now it's worth a chuckle.

I love three comments in the article:
1) "like it or not, everything that happened in this appalling hot mess is canon."
2) "If I had enough time and a hammer, I would go out and destroy every single copy of it." -George Lucas
3) “I’m not convinced the special wasn’t ultimately written and directed by a sentient bag of cocaine.”

For those interested, in the new show The Santa Clauses on Disney Plus--I think it was episode 5--the Santa Claus that covered the 70s said he had the job in the worst time period because he had to cover the Star Wars Christmas Special.
