Old site (rpol.net) three line break on forums. When?!

I just noticed something on the old site. I know a portion of RPoL uses it, at least some of the time (some use it all the time). So I wanted to know if the three line break is new.

As I see it, it has three threads, then a visible spacing, visually like the three threads are raised and the spacing is a depression, and then this repeats. This is uniform as there are 24 threads. The header with the Notice is the only thread on this separate "island".

How long has it been that way?! I just today noticed it.

I'm...not seeing anything like that on the old site. (I don't normally use it, but went to check this!) Not on the main page, in forums, in games, anywhere.

Are you sure it's not the product of a custom theme, somehow?

I screenshotted what I see, so I'll upload (a link to) it hen I have more time.  It's really funny that this would how I tested this out. I wasn't planning on doing so any time soon, but better now than never.

It may be my theme, or settings. Maybe it's my browser, no idea. Never noticed it prior.

Screen shot to come...

I'm on the old site and I'm not seeing anything like that in either Firefox or Edge ... and I'm not aware of any recent code updates.

Sounds like it might be a problem at your end - can you check to see if you get the same display issue using a different browser ?  :>

Not a problem, not at all. If anything it's as helpful as users here generally separating paragraphs by a blank row, rather than just an indent.

I need to locate the screenshot, and see if it shows up there. It very well may be a display "error" that's just in my favor.

Going to spend 15 minutes, because I'm curious, but may very well spend my time better if it takes longer.

Sounds like whatever it is, it's my end. That seems to be the conclusion. Or maybe I'm just more sensitive to the adjustment and exaggerated the detail.

Here is a screen shot of what I saw when I was asking.

Just if you're curious what all the buzz I made was about.

The breaks are transparent, aren't they? So what you see is the background. Change the background and everything will look the same.

In reply to V_V (msg # 10):

I -do- see what you're talking about in that screenshot. Every third "break" between the threads is a miniscule amount of space wider than the ones above and below it (or it appears that way, at least). It's really only apparent if you look at the far righthand edge. I can't notice it as readily if I look at the body of the thread titles, or the lefthand side.

But I do see it. I don't have any idea what is making it look like that, but I don't think it's the background theme. I switched mine to the dark purple, and it's definitely NOT making the breaks look like your screenshot.

Okay....well thank you for the feedback all! I have Tourettes, ASD, (and Misophonia) and part of the perks (that can come) of that is hyper sensitivity. It may have been there all along, or may vanish before I know it. I appreciate the break in lines.

Much like how I've modeled this thread, it makes it easier for me to sort what I'm looking at. Could be screen resolution, could be quite a number of factors. I'm glad at least someone else noticed what I was talking about.

*chuckles* I really am going to enjoy the new car smell of the responsive site when I fully transition, but I enjoy the site shown because I haven't discovered all that exists in this version. Part of my enjoyment (of anything) is discovering all there is to know about it. Much of this transitions to the new site. I honestly *smirk* I honestly thought I just discovered something old hat to most, and wanted to know.

I was amazed awhile ago by the underlining color seeds. This and that. So I thought this was just a feature I overlooked.

Anyway, again, I appreciate the feedback. It's a neat little quirk. I like it. ;) I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Yeah, in the screenshot, every third line looks like it's a bolded dotted line ... but that's really just because the gap is wider so you're seeing slightly more of the swirly background image which is making it appear that way.

I've rechecked in both Firefox and Edge, and the normal white background doesn't seem to widen every third line ... what browser are you using V_V ?  And if it's something other than Firefox/Edge, can you have a look at the forum in either of those browsers ... just so we can try to determine whether it's a specific browser problem or not.  :>

I believe that what you're talking about is the empty space between the top bar and the various tables that compose the main portion of the screen.   If that's what it is, then it's always been there.  It's the "separator" placed to keep things from bumping into each other.

Took slightly longer. Logged out (After closing all browsers) and took this screenshot.

To me it's easy to see the breaks.

To me it's also NOT a problem. I prefer this, it helps me sort what I'm looking at by 8 blocks of 3. In the same way it helps to write as I have, rather than this...

literally the above without breaks:

Since I have the attention of a moderator, I feel inclined to share the data so someone can investigate it, if they see this as an unintentional consequence. In my opinion it's a desirable outcome.

I will be glad to check in with more reports, in a more direct manner if it's desirable for this site and for some greater underlying problem exposed by this symptom. If not, I'm fine to chalk it up to some specs on my rig.

Yup, I can definitely see the breaks in your image file ... and yet with the same Firefox, same latest patch, and same White background, I don't get the wider gap every three rows ...

... but I have managed to duplicate the issue by playing with the Zoom setting - at 100% all gaps are equal, at 133% I get the wider gap every three exactly per your image file ! <the crowd goes wild> :>

Another variation in that mix might be the screen resolution/size - I'm running 1920x1080 (recommended) on a 24" monitor.

If you have different size monitor/resolution, your mileage may vary, but have a go at playing with the Zoom setting just to see if it does affect what you see - as you say, you're happy with the appearance with that wider gap, and assumedly happy with your current Zoom, just be interesting to confirm if Zoom (probably in conjunction with screen size/resolution) is the culprit.   ;>

I suspect it's either Firefox specific, or 133% specific, Skald.

Just went and checked on Chrome, which won't give me a 133% (just 125% and 150%) and I -cannot- replicate it, in any color scheme setting. (Although I can see it on the files, so I do know what I'm looking for!) (Edit: I'm also running the 1920x1080 resolution)

*hangs head and laughs* Yes, that's the "problem". lol. So embarrassed right now. I've been used to sitting a good 60+ cm away from my monitor in my dwelling since two dwellings ago. It's the 133% zoom, yes. That is exactly what it is.

No problemo !  :>   Someone has to be the first to spot something odd and speak up, and I have to admit I do enjoy troubleshooting such inconsistencies ... if nothing else, it's always a relief when we can determine it's not an issue with RPoL code.

And the next time someone queries it (a working life that included user support tells me it's inevitable), we'll know the answer.  <grins>

Medals all round !  ;>

Now, you know what's strange? I checked on Firefox just now, and I get two breaks for every two threads, not one break every three threads. :)

... I can duplicate that in Firefox at 240% Zoom !  :>

The appearance of wide gaps seems to be mostly related to Zoom setting, but it certainly could be affected by screen size, display resolution, browser ... basically anything that could affect video rendering.
