'Ello!

Ello, everyone!

I'm Callisto (It's not my real name but who's keeping track?) and at the time of this post I'm new to Rpol. I'm not new to roleplaying; I've been doing that for a while. I'm an American high school student living in Massachusetts (Eastern Time Zone).

Roleplay-wise, I'm not very picky when it comes to joining a group. My favorite genres are horror, sci-fi, drama, and contemporary set-ups. Specifically, I adore games in which the main conflict is social in nature rather than physical. Given the choice between a game about a warzone and one based around politics, I would go with the latter. Of course that doesn't mean I won't play with a game boasting a theme of violence, but I have preferences. I'm up to try anything, though! Those are just what I have found to enjoy in the past.

As for types of RPs, I lean heavily towards freeforms because I don't have the materials available for D&D and the like.

I'm still getting the hang on this site since every different medium does things their own way, so excuse me if I don't catch on to an acronym or a term I haven't heard before.

Other than that, I think I'm explained! Thanks for reading and I hope to be a part of this community!

In reply to Callisto (msg # 1):

Welcome to RPoL!

You've made a great first step by posting in Beginners.

You might also hang out and post in Community Chat for a while.  That's a more free-wheeling talk about anything kind of place (within the rules, of course).

Other places to spend your time getting acclimated should probably be the FAQs and Help.  Browsing these will help you put together the kinds of questions that will help you learn more faster.

Please, definitely, pay attention to the section in Help on Site Policies.  You'll find the place has an etiquette all its own.  These folks don't make rules willy-nilly, though.  It's been my experience that for every rule there is a history behind it.

Once you know your way around comfortably, you can find games in two places:

Wanted - Players (which is where GMs of existing games advertise for players)

Game Proposals, Input, and Advice (which is where folks looking to start new games float the proposals for them to gauge interest before doing the work that goes into fielding a game here.  It's also where folks looking for tips on how to make their games more successful can ask for (you guessed it) input or advice.  This forum is a great way to "get in on the ground floor" as a game is getting started.

If you're looking for something specific that you don't see, you can always put up an advert in Wanted - GMs and see if there's a Game Master out there who will run it for ya.

If you ever get the yen to run a game of your own, this place has a GM's toolkit like no other I've seen on the 'net.  Most features of this toolkit evolved in response to requests from players and GMs and have now acquired mature stable forms subject only to incremental changes.

As you might be able to tell, I'll go on at length.  Don't let that scare you:  dive in - the water's fine.

Welcome!

Horus is spot on with advice on where to look at.  Players wanted is good for finding different types of games and genres.  I would suggest also that you investigate the various games you might be interested in.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page and see what else the GM might be running or what they have run in the past.

Click on more info on a particular game you might think on joining but don't join right then and there.  Check it out for a couple of days and think about it over night.  If you are like me, there are many that will appeal to you but you want to take your time a bit.

Some games allow lurkers so you might check into that also.  Ask the GM if you can lurk.  That means you can see most of the posts that people will put up and see how people interact.  It will also give you an outlet to ask the GM and players questions about the game.

Either way...Welcome to RPoL.
