Private lines and player names

Hi all.

I'm just starting my first campaign, and I'm quite impressed by the functionalities this site has. I had one question that I was not sure on after reading through the help.

If a character's name is changed, would the player still able to see any private lines which had been addressed to the old character name? Or would these all become invisible?

Welcome

If you are talking about when a player request to join and you give them a character name they can still read any messages in their request PM.

Thanks for the reply.

That wasn't what I meant, I'll try to illustrate with an example.

A guy called Strider joins the party. At some point, it's revealed that Strider is in fact Aragorn, ancient king of Gondor. Once the revelation is made, the player playing Strider asks you to change the name of their character to Aragorn.

Earlier in the the adventure, you wrote this:

--------------

One man looks in your direction, immediately smiling and waving excitedly.

(Private to Strider: You've met this guy before. His name is Dave and he smells bad.)

--------------

If Aragorn reads back through the thread, will he no longer see this crucial information about Dave's odour problems since he's no longer called Strider?

Gotcha, especially since I have a middle earth game.  What I usually do is give a second character to the player with the name he wishes to be called by.  Having both there is no way he will miss the PM.  As for changing the name and expecting him to see the PM its trial and error and I don't think the player can see the old thread.  It also messes up your PMs as they will split into separate PMs if you change the name even the least bit so you get a myriad of PMs.  So its probably best to keep the old character and create a new one.  Even if you made the least bit name change it does cause them to no longer see what was said unless you address them in their request to join PM.  There they can reply as any character but otherwise the AI just doesn't get that it is the same person.  Even if you delete the character then make an identical character again the old PMs will not be seen by the player no matter where they are except in that RTJ PM.

Private lines and player names

I believe the OP was asking about Private Lines in an open thread, not PM threads.

In the Help, it says:
quote:
Insert a private line to
This drop-down box will open a dialog; any text entered in that dialog will be inserted (in proper code) at the insertion point within the message. Private Lines may be read only by GMs and the players of the characters to whom they are addressed.

As far as I'm aware, if the character name is changed, the player will no longer have access to PLs addressed with the old name.

Thanks all for the help. Just creating a private group with only one character in it seems a simple solution, then.
