Scion

Do you guys consider Scion a part of the World of Darkness? as in taking place in the same game world as Werewolf, Vampire, or any of the others? Or do you consider it a separate world  unto itself?

If the same how would you run Scions next to the others, wouldn't they over power the others eventually?

Re: Scion

I consider Scion to be a different universe from the World of Darkness.  They gain strength very quickly, too quickly for fair play between Scions and the WoD splats.  I do not know how you could balance this, unless all of the PCs were Scions.

Similar system, entirely different setting.

Re: Scion

With epic stats and some more skills being pretty up there a Scion can easily overpower a Garou so I wondered if there was a way to balance it out to let the different groups into the same game without favoring one or the other.

Re: Scion

That is always a pain, I've used Scions as NPCs, and made them roll with the NWoD dice system, You might want to reduce the number of epic successes, and defense bonuses though.

Re: Scion

I've always considered Scion to be a subsystem (or rather potential subsystem) of Mage. I've always considered both Mage: the Ascension and Mage: the Awakening lacking when it comes to sheer dealing damage and combat in general. Sphere system had virtually nothing to offer in terms how bad@$$ is the demon (or tiger or robot) you just summoned and Do rules are nothing short of ridiculous. On the other hand, as an action game Scion works fairly well (something which cannot be said for its predecessors such as Aberrant and Exalted), so it struck me as a logical choice.

Of course I'm aware that one cannot patch the two systems simply with a duct-tape, but if we were to add a viable combat system to match iconic prose we associate with Mage, this is where I'd start. I'm not denying obvious problems with balancing Scion with other WoD games, but that does not concern me because I've never allowed crossovers in my chronicles (or rather I've always used Mage rules to simulate powers of vampires, werewolves etc.).

On the other hand, mages are supposed to be able to do all scions can (at least at hero level), such as making themselves stronger, faster, more beautiful, fly etc. and I've always permitted my characters to do that, albeit with little consistency. At least with that (consistency) Scion is supposed to help.

Unfortunately, by the time Scion came out, most of my gaming group turned employee on me, so there was virtually no playtesting done. Still, if anyone would actually be up for experimenting with Mage and Scion, consider me very interested.

Re: Scion

I would be up for some hot Mage on Scion action if we could get a group together to test it.

Re: Scion

it's been a LONG time, but couldn't a M:tA character have Forces:5 and basically create a small black hole inside their opponents? Or better yet, swap the strong and weak nuclear forces function in a target... POOF! instant disintegration...

maybe we were doing it wrong back then ???

Re: Scion

Yeah, a forces 5 mage could do that. Level 5 in anything got rather absurd with it's effects.

Mind 5+Life 5, and you chan shapeshift someone into a crab, and make them think they are a crab.

It was all that Paradox that you had to worry about when reality slapped you around for doing that.
