Mutants and Masterminds

Hey; I'm Lulu, thirty-four years old, any pronouns are fine. I have been roleplaying in some form for my entire life; as early as five years old I was using Lego minifigures and such to play and run stories both original and emulating my favorite video games. I first got into formal tabletop RPGing about fifteen years ago, and Mutants & Masterminds about four years ago. I have built maybe fifty characters but have limited actual play experience, mostly involving games that fell apart after the first few sessions or scenes.

I'm interested in games with strong ties to real socioeconomic and political themes, that use the backdrop of superhuman powers and abilities to explore the depths of the human condition. Because of this I most enjoy well-realized, verisimilar worlds with deep nuanced characters worth interacting with, caring about, and changing their lives for the better -- or worse. I play games to chase the feeling that what I do matters, to pick sides in moral and ethical dilemmas, and to fight for them against difficult but carefully-tuned-to-not-be-insurmountable odds.

I like to play weird characters that have no direct counterpart to any existing fiction and prefer to avoid the common trope of "weedy-woodly-woo, now you have superpowers, how mysterious!" so that I can effectively employ my unique characters' backstories and power origins.

I have a strong gamemastering background and am willing to help prospective GMs build their game, even run the occasional session focused on a B-plot or side antagonist.

I am looking for a campaign, not a living world.

I would prefer an original setting rather than the Marvel/DC universes, one where supers are either or both of just beginning to emerge and fairly uncommon.

How original were you thinking?

LoonyLadle:
Hopeful bump! Maybe a brief explanation of the character I hope to play will rouse some interest.

How married are you to that concept?

Orson Welles:
The enemy of art is the absence of limitations.

Which is to say I think super hero games especially, work better when players have some sort of creative prompt for generating their characters. My home group uses a random powers deck my buddy found. Weaver Dice has the other players generate the powers based on a random tragedy keeping the player's loose goals in mind. Another one I saw had you powers be basically a 3 part gig where you write one then you pass to the player to your left and to your right.

Sir Swindle:

Mostly I just don't want the overhead of fifty bazillion heroes who have been around longer and are better than me in every conceivable way. I want to be part of the first wave, and not have to live in Super Dark Phoenix Psyker Wolverine Galactus' Left Bollock Man's shadow.

So if you want to take the real world and apply superheroes, that's fine. If you want a fictional City of Adventure, or to take things into the past or future, that could be fine. If you want to make a whole new world from the ground up that would work too, though it seems a lot of effort.

Sir Swindle:
How married are you to that concept?

Not immensely, but it ties up a lot of aspects I want to explore into a single mechanically interesting character. I'm certain that some degree of translation will be necessary to make the idea work in whatever metaphysics framework you come up with. I'm not entirely opposed to adapting one of my innumerable existing characters into a superhero, but I do find a lot of traditional super origin stories incredibly trite.

Orson Welles:
The enemy of art is the absence of limitations.

A wonderful sentiment, one I generally agree with.

Re: Mutants and Masterminds

I think a re-do of Marvel's "New Universe" might be a good start to a game.  Everyone has the 'same' origin of a single event.  Or look at White Wolf's Aberrant game where the official cause is one event, but the real cause is a little more.... not sinister but not what the world thinks it is. Or was.

Re: Mutants and Masterminds

That reminds me of a time, a few years ago, of a fella, I forget his name, who was asking for an M&M game here every few days. He was quite persistent. Then, I remember seeing a game open, applying for it, getting in, and playing for a while. Eventually it folded, like many games do, but the original poster looking for the game never even knew it was around. He never applied to the game. The game ad came out, it was mobbed by seven or eight people, and then it was closed two days later once it was full. I honestly don't think that fella even knew the game ad was out at all. Oh well. It happens.

I thought it was a rather odd situation of not paying attention to the game recruitment thread.

So, the OP stipulated against Marvel/DC for the setting, preferring an original setting with powers being a new thing. That could be interesting, but could go in two directions. On one hand, a lower power game with street level crime fighting against mundane goons. On the other hand, a high power game where the PCs are the world's response to every power-based problem that arises. I'd personally prefer to be a player in the former, but am curious to hear the OP's preference since this is the OP's game request.

Hi Ganurath! I generally prefer lower power games with more personal and human sorts of stories so I would definitely lean more towards the former. When I do play more powerful characters I like to pair them with a significantly weaker character who nonetheless has power over them, typically emotionally. Flipping the power dynamic like that tickles me!

As the lowly bump-rogue admires his prize days later in what he foolishly considers safety and privacy, there comes a scampering and pounding of heavy metal boots. The craven and unwashed peasant recognizes danger, for a coward always knows when to run, and dashes for the window! He scarcely has its wooden-framed panes ajar when a bright light illuminates his shameful figure from below, and at the front of his hovel the door is blown off its hinges from a single kick. Oh no... it's...

THE ROYAL BUMP-MARINES!

"Mwa hah hah hah, you medieval peasants think to claim the glory of Her Royal Bumpiness? Taste the boot of our Bumperial Power Armor!"

And so, the rogue's prize was returned to its rightful owner, and his body to its rightful grave!

Mutants and Masterminds

Suddenly the bump-rogue... bumped his head... on the table... right next to his trusty mug of ale. He looked around, and saw the familiar surroundings of his tavern, next to all the other patrons, who talked and drank the night away like they always did on a Friday night. (Not Thor's Day.)

What a nightmare it had been. Bumperial Power Armor! How funny! Like anyone would ever wear something so garish and heavy they would not be able to move in it anymore. And what ugly colors.

Glad for this sudden realization, it had been nothing but a dream after all, the dashing rogue took his pack, the bump crown safely stashed within it, and grabbing one more bottle for the road, left the tavern to find his luck in the great bump civil war. It was time to consider his next move. Where would he go? Would he join the league of extraordinary rogues and try to retake the Crown Castle? Or perhaps he would enlist with the Crown Rangers, and patrol the borders of the lands for wanna-be pretenders who might try to gather news and troop movements.

Both sounded appealing.

It was then that a pair of lasses, done for the day with their chores on the fields, walked by, their lustrous skin reflecting in the torch light. They gave the handsome rogue a welcoming smile. And as they walked on, the pretty one looked back and gave the rogue an inviting nod.

Knowing exactly that was needed did not require any skill here. And enlisting was now a "lesser priority".

Making his own luck in the world, the rogue joined the lasses for a night of merriment and more drink.

He dearly hoped they had enough coin, though, for his purse was now empty.

The Bump Crown would be safe for another day, regardless.

*Bump!*

I don't thin so. The core books core 3e are either the Basic Hero's Handbook or the Deluxe Hero's Handbook. I can share one if you want.

I have begun to think to the setting. For now I would go more for a universe where genuine superhero are a new in the world, either you would be in the first wave or we begin the play a decade after the first appearances when everyone has become accustomed to their existences and the first are already etablished. What do you think?

I could go either Superheroes: Day One or a decade or so later dependent on what you think makes for a better story; as long as we're not operating in the shadows of mightier heroes that make our own works seem insignificant in comparison.

Yes.  DCA is MnM3e, but skewed to the DC Universe.  Also, because it was printed earlier, it doesn't contain errata-fixes.  Functionally, it's the same rule-set.

In reply to LoonyLadle (msg # 1):

I really enjoy the Mutants and Masterminds system. I am currently building a world that can be run using the system, but I have gently moved away because I can never find anyone willing to play. I was actually just building it when I stumbled across this topic.

I saw your different characters that you were looking to make. The world I am creating has a mixture of advanced technology and magic so I could possibly accommodate some of those character ideas utilizing it. However, I would like to be upfront and say its not your typical superhero story. You are superhuman and capable of great feats and you can wear a costume if you want, but it's not inherently designed around superheroes but rather superhumans.

To sum up the storyline simply; you're a demon hunter. What makes this storyline more complex is what my players bring to me. As I see the different backstories and characters involved I can very quickly create a narrative that is guided by the characters rather than a preset idea. I've run about three games this way and I have found its very successful. (Just a whole lot of notes for me lol).

If you're interested let me know. I can start shaping the game for a Mutants and Masterminds game then.

In short: The content of those shows exists in this world, but the power levels of those shows are too low. I feel the largest difference of those shows is their tone. It could go either way, it depends on you. How do you imagine Inoue hunting demons for how you understand them?

If you want to know what I think, here ya go:

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
Personally, my inspirations are derived from comics and manga since that's what I grew up on. When I think of Inoue I see her like a Lucy from fairy tail summoning various spirits with various abilities. Probably uses a staff and smacks anyone that gets close. If by chance she knows martial arts then she probably knows kung fu and uses a variation of Bo Staff techniques (which would not be a far assumption to make at all as monks learn this as a way of life). She most likely gets involved as a demon hunter per the practice of her people and is a warrior shrine maiden.

Since she is an investigator I don't see her actually patrolling the city, but rather using her powers as a medium to understand what those who have passed have seen and responding to those events. As such she is probably a very key player in the group even finding the evidence of demons. Alongside any video footage and witness testimonies.

However, since she needs to, "[know] she is getting into combat in advance she [to] be a real menace," then I also imagine that unlike Lucy she is not summoning these spirits on command. Which means that there is either a ritual or place they are tied to. I imagine this is her shrine which also means that this is not innately her magic, but rather a relic left behind from The Protectors (the gods of this world). Which also means she doesn't know the magic language and is not innately herself a spellcaster. The one spell she does know, her ability to talk to the dead, is what (in the context of my world) we call the Designation of the Soul and is a natural ability she has always had and is the reason she became a shrine maiden in the first place. This same ability is how she calls upon the spirits she needs in combination with some sort of magical artifact that binds them to her command. And since one of her weaknesses is prep time its literally just the distance it takes the spirit to travel from the Shrine to her location which is why it is beneficial for her to already be traveling with them. It's interesting and befits her because her effectiveness increases with her proximity to the shrine.

If you wanted to take it a step further then they probably use her unused source of mana to power their abilities and this is why she hasn't bothered learning the magical language because if she wasted the mana on her own spells then she wouldn't have enough to use her spirits. She doesn't need to worry about defense because the people of this world can innately use their magic to defend from attacks. So, she has focused on honing her body instead to survive. Without her spirits she is simply a Bo Staff user which doesn't leave her with zero options and with them she is a powerful sorcerer. It's fun, I think.

LoonyLadle:
Still on the market for games! I've updated my original post with some new info, including a link to my Big Character Index.

I can't find your original post. The post at the top of this thread seems to have been deleted. Can you give us a link to the updated version?

I suppose that the updated version is at:

Okay, so in fact the updated post was quite easy to find if I bothered to use the bulletin board as designed.  I think it is time for another coffee.

Re: Mutants and Masterminds

I can't believe I've been bumping this for almost three years now. Are supers games just not popular or something?

In reply to LoonyLadle (msg # 73):

So, I have ran a large Mutants and Masterminds game before, but in order to do it appropriately you need someone who is extremely well versed in the rule set as the system seems to allow for a ton of nerfing and min maxing.

I would be interested in running the game, I actually have several good ideas for it, but would need someone who was more the numbers person as an assistant.  Definitely something I would be interested in running again.

Re: Mutants and Masterminds

I can definitely be that person for you! I've been in contact with several major M&M communities for some time and they have helped me get a really solid grasp on the rules as intended as well as the merits of both high and low optimization.

would you be willing to spit out a character build for a player who is familiar with the mechanics but struggles with character generation?

It’s character generation that is my issue as well.  I just need someone to check over characters and approve them and I would run the game.

Re: Mutants and Masterminds

Housejohnson here is looking to run what sounds like a living world game with as many players as feel like applying, while I'm looking for a more conventional close-knit campaign experience. I'm willing to vet a party of four to five players, but dozens is a little beyond what I was prepared to offer.
