Turn based empire / settlement builder?

I'd like to play a game, where each week represents a turn, where the players are building up their resources, performing actions, interacting with one another as well as NPCs.

I did one years ago inspired by Shadowrun, and we ended up with very different themes for each of the players.

In terms of theme I'm quite open, so homebrew or based on something established, fantasy, sci-fi, post-apocalypse, etc.

We could be rival nations/corporations/empires and building things at a macro level, such as increasing production by more mining colonies, or more a micro level and each person having a settlement, and building specific buildings in the settlement.

However I would need it to have hard rules, not just a god like where you can do pretty much anything.

Does anyone have, or be interested, in running such a game?

I would also be interested in playing such a game, although I am spread too thin to run it myself right now...

I'd be very interested in playing in this, though like shapeshade I can't run it at the moment.

Same here for interest. I've tried to run a few in the past and have always underestimated the time and effort a GM needs to run such a game.

Happy to co-GM if needed, but couldn't take sole responsibility for a game. Not at present anyway.

Question is though, what genre are you interested in?? Fantasy settlement / empire building?? Historical / age of sail Imperial colonisation (either real-world or?? Contemporary?? Post-apoc?? Sci-Fi??

I can't speak for the others, but as I put in my initial post, I'm quite open. Something not contemporary would be my main thought. Something beyond what we are, so magic, advanced technology, radioactive monsters, otherwise it would just be Company SimulatorTM, and where is the fun in that?

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

I've thought about something this on-and-off throughout the years.

I'd be especially interested to hear more about Nu_Fenix's experience playing this with Shadowrun. That is the setting I am most familiar with, and I'd be curious what worked and what didn't.

I would want to play, but could potentially co-GM as well. The sticking point is the rules, namely that I don't have any and I don't want to come up with them from scratch. Does anyone have rules that they've used before?

I can't remember much, as it was several years ago. We had a group played as, but also had a figurehead. The figurehead had a bonus to an action of our choice, which could be attacking, negotiating, spying, hacking, etc. You had so many points of different resources to spend each turn, which could be used to improve what you had by buying property, recruiting people, and so on.
As far as I could tell, it was a completely homebrewed system the GM made.

Also, replying to allow a bump, to find more potential players, but primarily a GM who would be interested in doing such a thing.

Fr this kind of game what would be the goal/endgame?  World domination? Or just surviving until 2020 when everything goes pear shaped?

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

Maybe it is a set number of turns, and after that who is the biggest/strongest/most powerful wins?

Or when it starts losing interest and it ends naturally?

Or maybe it never does, though it then makes it hard for new players to get involved without being squashed (see all mobile games that build a town/space station).

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

Kevin Crawford's games (like Stars Without Number) with their faction system might be hackable to this. At least to give some groundwork for the kinds of things your faction/corp/city could produce and what a "turn" looks like.

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

Reminds me of a War game I had played once upon a time.... Some RPG elements, but mostly Empire Managing.  We had allot of different types.  I was a Orc/Troll/Dragon Alliance, with the strongest military in the world out the gate.  However, while my tech was on par with most other players (Iron Age), my economy was in shambles.  Spent most of my early turns invading neighbors for resources and trying to find new sources of food to feed my massive army.  Ended up with a few interesting events that happened.  Another Nation was some Techocracy (ww2 Era Tech), but no magical abilities what so ever, and a much SMALLER military.  Ran decently but it just faded away cause the GM stopped posting.

If I had the Time, I might be interested in trying my hand at running one again.  But at the moment, I will just keep this in mind, and check back once in a while.
