Rolemaster 2nd Edition

I lost all my Rolemaster stuff, but might be persuaded to revive my Bladehex game (built for Rolemaster). No promises, and it would take a while to get it up and running, but if I do, I will let people know.

Rolemaster 2nd Edition

Well now I'm interested also.  I have most of the Rolemaster and Shadow World books and a few MERP purchased as PDF's but am not entirely convinced I won't get sued if I share them.  I've also printed them and built 3-ring binders for GM'ing in the past.  I've run a couple of games on here in the past but it is a slow-moving format.  Because of the mechanics, posts take an incredible amount of time to compose (2 - 4 hours typically).  I also have spreadsheets to track character development but I still find the occassional flaw in them...

All of that said, I'm taking the next week on vacation but would consider running a game when I get back.  It would keep me off World of Tanks...

Any preferences on setting or campaign ideas?

Rolemaster 2nd Edition

That sounds like awesome news.
I believe I still have the basic RM2 box ('red border edition') somewhere in the basement.

No preferences here either. Never delved into Shadow World. I'd be happy with High or Low Fantasy, no preferences there either. I do prefer to not jump in at higher levels as I like the developing of characters based on experience rather than a concept developed on paper ...

Yeah, it is the Red Border Edition plus Companions I, II, III, IV and V (I seem to recall there were 6 in total?).
Read them since my last post.
Thrilled even more if a game were to set off.

7 companions books.

Was it RabbitBall that mentioned he might be prepared to GM this?

I would have to reacquire all the books somehow, and then find time to flesh out my notes. I'm in a bit of a housing crunch right now, so that's taking longer than I would like. But if I get settled, I would restart Bladehex.

Rolemaster 2nd Edition

EDIT: okay I'm hooked again after pulling the box of rules and my stack of ME supplements. It was the second thing I GM'd after a few years of D&D and me starting to hate the pure-classes ;) so I have a bit of an emotional attachment to its krunchiness.

I'll GM - yes, I said it - and we can see how we go from here.
  • It'd be in Middle Earth since I prefer that background and I have a fair amount of the material
  • 1640, TA. Because most ICE material is for that date, which makes it easier to get a campaign up and running.
  • I'm thinking no Noldor or Sindar Elves. Sylvan, or Wood Elfs, should be fine.
  • Good only. Well good-ish.
  • start at level 1
  • 4-5 players only or we'll get bogged down
  • I'd prefer Low Magic... no proto-Gandalfs, which probably translates to no pure or hybrid casters. I'm also not sure about Monks or Warrior Monks, without an exotic concept/background. I think the other semi-spell classes work though.
  • Otherwise core professions, lists, weapons rules only, just to keep it manageable, at least to get started. No companions or annuals.
  • I'd like to blend in some of the MERP character generation material, if only because the cultures in RMSS were a bit generic.

If anyone is still interested, there are a couple of questions just to see where we sit right now and if we still have interest. Please respond here in the next week or so

A. what ruleset? I know the rules are pretty much the same with some minor changes over time, at least until you get to the new RMU rules.
  • My preference is for Rolemaster Standard System (RMSS) (1995-1999) just because the rules got cleaned up a little and I can find all of those.

Thoughts?

B. Preliminary thoughts on where in Middle-Earth?This isn't to say that you can't travel but just so I can start to re-stack supplements and start to think about customizing them, and what a wider campaign looks like. I'm not looking at a campaign starting beyond Umbar or Rhun simply because of the extra work to get it going. So, broadly...
  1. East of Misty Mountains - Mirkwood, Dale, Lake-Town, Lonely Mountain, Dol Guldur etc
  2. West of Misty Mountains - Eriador, Shire, Bree, Arnor, Angmar, blah, blah
  3. Gondor - Minas Tirith/Ithil, southern Gondor, might be a little bit more of a civilized/ urban campaign?

If it's still of interest to enough people I'll start the game.

Interest for sure.
Actually more than that but I lack the words since I had about given up hope and just cannot find the time to set something up myself.

A
Perfectly okay with RMSS, I like the skill system more than 2nd Ed's secondary skill approach. And I like the difference of category and actual skill.
So, yeah, actually my preferred system, too. But I'd be happy with any ruleset as long as it is Rolemaster.

I also prefer low magic, if only for the setting of choice.
And that would indicate to use Treasure Companion Section 4.3.3 for Background Options, too.
As a recommendation of sorts for the only Companion to include right from the start. Certainly not necessary, though.

B
I am not too heavy on ME lore but was in an awesome TOR ring years ago. That was much later though. I am unfamiliar with TA1640. It's after the Great Plague, right?
I like the Rule of Men, though.
So #2 or #3 would be my "vote"

I don't have that book (yet), but I'm quite open to making better Background Options since it's a one-off during generation, rather than complicating ongoing play.

Yes, post-plague, and about two hundred years after the Kin-Strife. Cardolan was just conquered by the Witch King in 1636, leaving Arthedain as the only bit of Arnor still standing so it's all looking a bit grim up north right now, which makes it more impactful. As one of the ICE books notes, the period around 1640 isn't overly interesting for playing around Gondor, at least if you're looking for "big stuff".

I don't have any of the RMSS stuff and can't speak to it.  That time period also means no Rohan yet, right?

Not in the area of Rohan. The peoples we know as the Rohirrim still live in Rhovanion, in the upper vales of the Anduin. Still cavalry-focussed, just in a different part of the world.

My preference is for RMSS, but if most people prefer and only own 2e then we can see about that. Its not like we want character generation to be more difficult!

Re: Rolemaster 2nd Edition

Got 2e in paper... or RM Classic digital.
RMSS digital, Basic in paper even
I'd say the 'complexity' really inly depends on how many skills one may want to take into account.
If 2e the huge effort will be to decide which options to use and which not.
Of course, just saying "no companions" will easily handle the matter :D

No companions... because I don't have them.

Anyway the game is at link to another game if you want to RTJ

Do not post here for questions about this game. Thread closed.
