Please add Three Dragon Ante decks to the card roller

I like Three Dragon Ante in it's own right as a game, but now I want to use it for character generation and yet have to hack something together or use an offline physical deck.

There are two decks, the original and emporer's gambit, and though you could mix and match piecemeal according to the manual, I'd be happy with just three options of Original, Emporer's Gambit, and combined of both full decks.

Could you post all the rules, and which cards are in which decks?

Also, I don't think there's a mechanism to track which cards have already been drawn from a deck -- each draw is a completely random draw so it's possible to get a duplicate draw.

For the full card game that would be a problem, though with a gm, the gm simply draws the entire deck in one go as a secret roll and doles out the cards from that.

But for chargen or tarot-like readings, you draw all cards in one go, so the unique results option already available is sufficient.

I'll get the card lists and everything posted as I can. Not sure I can post all the rules, since it is not a free game, but I don't think there are any rules that affect drawing from the deck, as you simply draw cards like any common card game such as poker.

I will say it is somewhat like poker, and the deck is a custom deck for the game, but there is no deck-building or anything like that. You just have the existing decks.

The original deck,
The list of cards and their strength rank. The number to the right is the dice result for that card. 6 of each dragon, 7 mortals, and 3 "god" cards. (I somehow missed 9, so I moved Tiamat to minimize how much retyping was needed. In case you were wondering about the pattern break.)

Please add Three Dragon Ante decks to the card roller

Here are the Emporer's Gambit cards. Not as clean looking because I C&P (gotta love Hacker's Keyboard that lets me use keyboard commands).

Evil Dragons:
Earthquake Dragon (12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 2)
Count the number of Earthquake Dragons in all flights and in the ante. Each opponent pays you that much gold

Brown Dragon (9, 6, 5, 4, 2, 1)
Steal 1 gold from the stakes. If your flight doesn't contain any good dragons, steal and extra 2 gold from the stakes.

Purple Dragon (11, 10, 8, 5, 3, 2)
Draw a card. Then put a card from your hand into the ante.

Shadow Dragon (9, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1)
Take a random card from the hand of the opponent with the most cards in hand. Discard this card and replace it with the card you took. That card's power triggers.

Gray Dragon (10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 2)
The opponent with the strongest flight pays you 1 gold for each evil dragon in the ante.

Good Dragons:
Steel Dragon (11, 9, 7, 5, 4, 2)
The opponent to your left chooses either to give you a mortal from his or her hand or to pay you 4 gold.

Mithral Dragon (13, 11, 9, 7, 5, 3)
Each player with three or fewer cards in hand draws a card. Then draw a card.

Iron Dragon (9, 7, 5, 4, 3, 1)
Put an evil dragon from the ante into your hand.

Adamantine Dragon (12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3)
Draw a card. Each opponent pays 1 gold to the stakes.

Mercury Dragon (10, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1)
Draw a card for each color of good dragon in your flight.

Mortals:
Dragon Turtle (3)
The power of each other mortal in your flight triggers.
Ante: When this card is put into the ante or is revealed as an ante card, each player pays gold to the stakes equal to the strength of the weakest ante card.

The Adventurer (10)
Discard one card from your hand or discard your entire hand. Then draw as many cards as you discarded.
Ante: The winner of the gambit splits the stakes evenly with opponents who scored special flights during the gambit.

The Emperor (6)
The gambit will not be scored until after the fourth round. When the gambit is scored, add 4 to the strength of your flight.

The Exarch (9)
Each opponent puts a card from his or her hand into the ante.
Ante: Cards of strength 10 or higher trigger when played.

The Queen (7)
Each opponent with both good and evil dragons in the same flight pays you 5 gold, and you take a random card from that player's hand.

The Sorcerer (8)
Reveal the top three cards of the deck. Discard this card and replace it with one of the revealed cards. That card's power triggers. Pit the other two revealed cards into the ante.

The Spy (5)
Put an ante card into your hand.
Ante: Whenever a player takes the first turn of a round, that player pays each opponent 2 gold.

The Wyrmpriest (5)
For the rest of the gambit, this card counts as a dragon of any color for completing a color flight, and you can complete a color flight with three mortals.

Unaligned Dragons:
Hatchling (4)
Copy the power of a weaker card in any flight.
Ante: The player with the weakest flight wins the gambit instead of the player with the strongest flight.

Io (13) Unaligned Dragon God
Each player pays gold to the stakes equal to the number of players.
Dragon God - As long as you have Io and a mortal in your flight, you can't win the gambit.

Please add Three Dragon Ante decks to the card roller

Something that might be interesting to develop might be a card drawer option on the dice roller...  Perhaps each game has the ability to draw cards - initially I can imagine a standard 52 card deck, but eventually custom decks where GMs can import their own decks into their games.  The decks would have to be attached to the game record and keep track of a) the full list of cards in each deck, b) the status of each deck (in use or not) and c) if in use, then the list of cards drawn already.  Then, when using the dice roller to draw a card, you select the deck you want to draw from, roll a random number to represent the card drawn, if the card drawn is already on the list of cards previously drawn, then the dice roller keeps rolling till it selects a card that isn't drawn.

I've done a similar system on a spreadsheet that I use to manage Magic the Gathering cards...

The dice roller already has the ability to simulate standard 52 and 54 card decks.  All cards drawn in a single use of the roller are unique, but it doesn't remember previous rolls.

Truthfully, if Jase ever gets around to it, it'd be nice to have alaised dice. Basically, when setting up the dice roller, name each possible result, and make it selectable as a die the same way we can select a card deck.

Then again, there is an old roller that let you not only define the list of results, but also weight the results in a simple "[weight], Name" format.

I can guess why that might not be a feature... it would be too easy to simulate copyrighted decks/dice.  I won't belabor it further, 'cause maybe I'm wrong?  (Or just too cynical with respect to human nature?)

That's the trouble with freedom. You can't allow it without giving up massive amounts of control.

So very true, but freedom of the press has always applied only to those who own the presses.  (Guess which OS I run at home?)

We're getting kinda far afield here, and I'm sorry for my part in that.

Re: Please add Three Dragon Ante decks to the card roller

I for one would love to see a 3DA simulator here.

Some caveats, however:
  • You would need multiple versions. There's one for the vanilla 3DA, one for Emperor's Gambit. Each is technically a separate game. You'd also need one for having both sets combined, and more for all the variant combinations suggested in the Emperor's Gambit rulebook.
  • You would need to recreate the text from the cards. Just knowing that you drew, say, a Gold Dragon with a 9 Strength is okay, but you would also have to have it repeat the card's power. That's a lot of info to store in the Die Roller.
  • It belongs to Wizards of the Coast. Anyone familiar with that company probably knows how fiercely they defend their intellectual property, even if it's long out-of-print.
  • It has a limited audience. I mean, yeah, I love my 3DA. But realistically it was never very popular. Never mind that the current D&D rules actually reference 3DA in the equipment list -- that wasn't enough to motivate them to reprint the game.

Probably easier to just make a list of the cards in use, then do a single "roll all dice, unique rolls only, record all results" roll of the appropriate number (like 1d70). The die roller can handle that without breaking a sweat.

Re: Please add Three Dragon Ante decks to the card roller

Is WotC really going to care if all we put are the card names and no other information?  Not sure that's really copyright infringement.

I'm going to need a clear list if I do this, something I can copy and paste.  Currently I'd have to rewrite the whole lot!

Re: Please add Three Dragon Ante decks to the card roller

Me again! There's a precedent set for being able to copy a games mechanics, as long as you don't copy the 'flavor text' or step on intellectual property. Since the only real 'IP' elements to 3DA are in the artwork, I'd hazard a guess that you could put everything from the cards in and they wouldn't bat an eye.

You could even post the rules themselves somewhere here -- say, in Heaven -- and still be kosher.

You can find a summary of the game mechanics on its Wikipedia entry. The full text of the rules can be found on this archive.org page, but it includes the 'flavor text' you'd want to avoid.

Also note that a new version, called Three Dragon Ante: Legendary Edition came out last month and it has some changes to the rules. I don't have a copy yet so I can't report on them.

Anyway, if you want to start with the Classic Edition, here's a simple list of the cards.

Re: Please add Three Dragon Ante decks to the card roller

Need it even simpler!  Here's how I'd write up tossing a coin;

Name:  Coin toss
  1. Heads
  2. Tails

Simple as that.  No cheating on the names, I'll be copying and pasting so if you do "White Dragon 1" and then the next line is "               2" you're making me do the work (and I'm not gonna!).

Perfect, thanks.  Added to the roller.  Usual disclaimer.. responsive site only!  If you want to test it out without clogging your game dice logs then mess with it on the beta site.
