Die Roller — Fate

I see that the die roller supports fudge dice (which have a range of: -1, 0, +1).  Unless I'm missing something, there doesn't seem to be a way to add any modifiers, though.

Could that be added?

Just about every dice throw in a game of Fate requires four fudge dice to be thrown and then a modifier is added.

A fudge die (-1, 0, +1) is essentially 1d3-2, perhaps this range could be created as a die called: F

That way, if someone tossed 4dF+1 ... the die roller would think 4d3-8+1 and spit out the results.

Hmm... FUDGE/Fate?

From an anonymous game:

00:40, Today: XXXXXXXXXXX rolled -1 using 4 Fudge dice ((-1, 0, -1, 1)).

(Roll was made choosing 4d3 with no modifiers, then choosing Fudge as the System-Specific Type, and clicking the "record each die" box.)

Does not this meet the requirements of a "4dF" roll such as you suggest?)

It would be easy to configure the die roller for this type of roll by default in a Fate game.

I see you dilemma, unless I'm missing something.  It appears that setting up 4d3 + 2 in the selector window has absolutely no effect.  Rigging the Roll by using a +2 there would only remove the two lowest results (-4 and -3) from the outcome pool, which is not the desired effect.

Likewise, specifying 1d3-2 four times in the manual selector does not give the opportunity to add anything to the overall result, even if a modifier is specified in the box at left.

Of course, adding 2 to the result is a "by inspection" computation, but that's likely to be no consolation.

The closest one could probably get would be:  4d3-6 ?  It would take some experimentation to verify that, though.

(My reasoning:  Addition is a commutative operation.

If    R = 1d3-2 + 1d3-2 + 1d3-2 + 1d3-2
then  R = 1d3 + (-2) + 1d3 + (-2) + 1d3 + (-2) + 1d3 + (-2)
a pro forma identity in this case, adding -2 is the same as subtracting +2
and   R = 1d3 + 1d3 + 1d3 + 1d3 + 1d3 + (-2) +  (-2) +  (-2) +  (-2)
by the commutative property of addition for real numbers...
and   R = 4d3 + (-8)
          by combining similar terms...

Adding the requested +2 would yield R = 4d3 - 6.  Unless there is a problem with the parser in the die roller, this arithmetic should work.)

All correct.  For folks that are in the know: [4dF = 4d3-8] and then you adjust integers from there.

But it is a long, and not-so-easy-to-explain workaround for new folks.  Particularly if they are really new to the system.

It would be much easier — from a teaching perspective — to ask for 4dF+2 and be done with it.

Not arguing that - merely taking the opportunity to see if I could remember enough of the properties of real numbers to formulate a proof of the concept.  It appears I was close enough for government work.  Thanks.

Fate is an up and coming game system.  It wouldn't hurt to add dF to the system-specific stuff if jase has the time.

Simply modifies aren't currently possible 'cos I was never asked to allow for them!  (c;  Can add it in but will probably have to change that input field so you do write the whole thing (4dF+2) rather than the current # of die.

Instead of adding the option to the fudge system, maybe adding another system where the box is the modifier only?
The 4dF + modifier of fate is akind to the 1d20 + modifier of d&d, it is used for every thing. I've seen a few exceptions, but it was for the gm only, when preparing the game, and even those exceptions where never a number of Fudge dices + modifier.

In reply to jase (msg # 7):

Thanks for the response, Jase.  One of the greatest perks RPoL has is that the Admin / Moderators are responsive to inquiries from the peanut gallery.

I love it.  The stuff you can fix usually gets addressed, and the stuff you can't at least gets a quick 'no, but here's the reason.'

Keep up the great work!
