Personal notes

I would like to suggest a section where a player can keep personal notes about what is happening in a game or character details that may develop in game or even minor details that may not come up often  but would be nice to remember for continuities sake later on. Some games are fairly slow and it is easy to forget details that may only be relevent every couple of years.

So, maybe like the scratchpad that is available in the menu already?

I opened a game just for this. With the threads; 'Ghosts'; 'GM's to avoid'; and 'Good players' and a few others. Just be sure they are not in group 0.

In reply to Chernobyl (msg # 2):

the note pad is fine for short term information but it also has a storage limit. I want a place where I can store background information about the characters, private history, things that you don't  want to p l ace in the general write up for one reason or another, like maybe they have a secret life as an axe murderer when they are not working as an embalming specialist.

In that case, create a Notice thread, and place it in a Group that players don't have access to (this is actually one of the reasons that Groups exist).  You can add new posts to the thread as required (perhaps one for each character, and edit them to add and remove information).

@bigbadron that is actually the reverse of the original question. Your suggestion gives the GM an in game place for notes. Not individual players. To do that needs a group per player that only they (and the GM) can see and post to.

I’ve kept all that info on my character sheets for years. No idea what the limit is for a character sheet text though.

Ask the GM to create a NPC named "Diary". Any player can send "Diary" a private message and thereby have a thread for their notes.
Only those with GM access will be able to read someone else's "Diary", which is necessary to protect the GM (as they are responsible for the content of the game).

Why not just a PM to the GM for that purpose?

I just think it would be nice if there was the publicly visible description of the character and what you wanted to be known about them by everyone and a separate sheet that would only visible to the player and the GM that would have the complete character write up with the full details and limitations on them as well as any important notes that happen in game.

I'm pretty sure that already exists. It's the character description, and the character sheet...

I'm confused what you're looking for, if those two things aren't the answer.

In reply to SunRuanEr (msg # 11):

Yep, 3 existing places to put things according to who should see them.

1: "Description" under "Character Details" is available to all (even Lurkers) and can hold quite a bit of info beyond a mere description from what I've seen in games. You can even link pictures.

2: Scratchpad is Character's Player only. Even the GM can't access it. It may not hold a lot, I'm not sure. It's always held what I needed.

3: "Character Sheet" also under "Character Details" can hold loads, and can be seen by the Owning Player and the GM. I frequently put notes there, from fluff Background to a copy of the Description, to planned character development to shopping lists.

Personally I tend to keep plot notes, group treasure notes, etc in Scratchpad, simply because it's easier to access than scrolling to the bottom of a multi page character sheet, but that's personal preference (and laziness).

I'm not sure what more you'd need for single game notes. For multi game notes, opinions of GMs (or players if you're a GM), etc, someone above recommended starting a "game" to keep such things in. As he said: change the groups to anything but group 0 for privacy.

Maybe I am doing something wrong because that's what I thought Character Details was for but I have never been able to put anything in their aside from a the two line bio and the character pic. I can't seem to add any other info to that page.

Let me clarify, I can enter a description of the character but there are no other options i can see. there is no option for character sheet

You're referring to "Change Biography", which is the two lines that appear under your character portrait on posts. What you want is "Edit Description", which gives you a lot more space to work with and is linked for others to see on the Cast page.

So when you open up the "character details" page, you should see at the top the place where you'll see slots for the Character Name, Tag, Posts, Biography pt 1, and Biography pt 2.

Below that is a link to "change biography" which is how you edit the two lines of Bio.

Below that, directly, should be View/Edit/Create Character Description.

This takes you to the place where you can enter in information about your character, or whatever else you want.  Keep in mind this is visible to Everybody.  You, the other players, the GM, random members of RPoL who might check out the game, everybody.

Then below that you will see "Edit Character Sheet", but only if the GM of the game has chosen to give players edit permissions.  Some do not.  This is visible only to you and the GM.

The should be two boxes in Character Details. The small one at the right has your character name, or, if you have more than one character in that game (or are the GM) more than one character name, and the ability to choose one.

To the left is a large box. This has the bio lines, portrait selection button, and view/edit for the Description.

Then, below both, a line. it reaches across most of the page.

Below that Either "Create Character Sheet" if you have permission from the GM but haven't made a sheet or "Edit Character Sheet" if you have a sheet and permission to edit.
Below that, nothing if "Create" or your actual sheet if "Edit". And if you have a sheet but no permission, a sheet should still be there, but read only.

I'm not sure what it says if there is neither sheet nor permission.

If you are the GM for the game, you still get a Create/Edit option and can make a sheet or note file or whatever.

If you're still not seeing the Create option OR a sheet of some sort....I have no idea what to tell you, frankly. I'd guess you're missing something, but who knows?

One way I've see it done is for the GM to set up a thread that all players have access to, then make one post as each character in the game in that thread, before locking the thread.

Each character can then edit their own post with whatever information they want to keep track of, using private lines for information that they don't want to be public.

As with everything else in any game (except the scratchpad, which is invisible to everybody but its owner) it requires that the GM set it up.
