IC for D&D 4e based on exploring and base building

I'm considering a 4e game that will not be sandbox, but very much a map with dozens or quests detailed by rumors. Magic items will not come from looting, for the most part, but from a sponsor/liege supplying the group as they explore and claim territory.

In short, you could not just create any character; they need to be motivated to explore, adventure, fight and claim new territory and unite established nations with common interests. Alignment is really just a word or two you put on your character sheet, but I'd like to avoid extremes in term of activity. I leave that to 3.5 and 5e. It's an unnecessary McGuffin, and I'd rather it serve an arbitrary purpose and just make it read "cooperative and loyal" in plain speak.

I have about 40% of the map done, but had a fiasco with a couple sore points. So I'd been working on it since the game "died" (it never started, but there was some confusion that it was at that stage because I had allowed players in).

I'm considering this and one other game, so whichever gets more attention I'll focus on.

If you're interested, let me know. I'm open to ideas within this field, but I definitely know I want to focus on the quests logs and map exploration, for a liege. Anything else, I can work with, but KISS. One of two character themes and goals at first, not tons. That was another problem I had with my "Dead" game. I need to work with a little at a time.

Interested in the exploring more than management. But can be open minded ...

I don't really do managemnt well as a GM, TBH. I certainly am open to building bases, having things like the door warden or Chandelier of Revelation, all the way down to a few stone buildings and some mercenaries; but I enjoy these more asa player than I am proficient to initiate as a GM. If a player wanted to do that, and it didn't slow the rest, I'm all for that. Mostly though, it's exploration. It's a world map as dungeon crawl type feeling. "Where do you go now?" and "You face these headhunting orc tribes" instead of "What door do you open?" and "There's an Ochre Jelly in in this room"

I'd be interested - sounds fun! Played a lot of 4e and liked it. Running through Pathfinder:Kingmaker computer game too, so exploration and kingdom-building is on my mind.

Having run this style of game for a while and tried another a little more "zoomed in", I can tell you that it becomes a bookkeeping nightmare if it runs for long.

I used "An Echo Resounding" for the rule system instead of 4e but it still should have the same eventual effect. It was fun until the paperwork became too much.

I have an idea (as does/did one of the players) on how to work around it but, his didn't get very far and I haven't been motivated to go down that rabbit hole yet again.

My suggestion is for the group to be nobles directly under a King. They control their henchmen to do the needed tasks. This would simplify things a lot.

Nah. It'll be 4e. Perhaps I'll remove the kingdom management from the title. This isn't like Kingmaker, persay. Basebuilding may be more appropriate. I've GMed this far before and it's taken four RL four years, I have full faith I'll be be able to just use the work I've done by the time the group gets to the F2F party's level.

AS a side note; this is an interest check thread, not advice. I know the forum allows both, and for good reason, but this is just an IC thread. I'll be glad to answer overlying questions, but I'm not looking for advice. This will be D&D 4e. :)

I'm sorry your game became a nightmare. :( I'm going to KISS from the beginning though.
