IC: Adventurer Society - 5E

Greetings,

I'd like to find out if some players might be interested in a game where all characters would belong to the same, globe-spanning organization to complete various available missions, contracts and quests all over the world. The players would not be required to enter the game with an already preconceived character concept, but may create characters based on the available missions and their preferences when it comes to group composition.

This could mean that some players would maybe start with a fresh character of level 1-3, choose fitting adventures of tier 1 and slowly make their way up through the following levels and higher tiers; all or at least most of the time sticking with one character. But it could also mean you create a new character at level 17 and play through a tier 4 quest first, then go back to the drawing board and try out a different concept for a level 8 character next.

For the start of the game I envision having some 3-5 available adventure plot hooks per tier (1-4) ready, with all of them being short and precise. The gathered player base can then discuss who wants to tackle which mission and-after at least three like-minded participants have been found-be grouped together for this part. Throughout the game players may hopefully mix and match with other groups and their various characters can establish some sort of a rapport with one another.

All of this would take place in a rather generic homebrew world, as the adventures will all be limited to a single location or small region at most. Maybe this aspect of the game might change over time (see the next point), but I plan to start more on the simple side than go for higher complexity right from the beginning.

To make things a bit more interesting, I plan to have missions that are either failed or haven't been attempted in the first place have some negative consequences in the longer run. This could mean that some missions evolve and become higher level with different aspects, or just have some other impact on the world. Some adventures may also be linked together to form a mini-arc that need to be completed by the same group of characters.

Just some basic ideas, let me know if there is general interest and if you have some questions and/or suggestions.

I love this idea in theory.  I have some character concepts that I never got to see through to high levels.  My one concern would be that due to the popularity of 5e, you will see a lot of interest in the game.  Are you accepting all-comers, or do you have a "weeding out" process?  How many people will you take in the game?  Also, since many characters will be "made to order," there will sometimes be a time delay before each mission can really start.  You will definitely need a "downtime" thread of some sort for general roleplay while everyone finishes their sheets.

There are entirely to many games that start, play, and end, all at low level.  Doing anything else will undoubtedly draw attention.

You may want to be a bit more specific on where you want to start however, or some confusion may happen.

Glad to hear it and this is exactly what I had in mind. I'm sure that many players are in the same boat, having too many ideas for characters that they never get to play or try out.

That's the point I wasn't quite certain about. I'm well aware of the fact that more traditional games (compared to my idea) garner a lot of interest in general, but maybe that wouldn't be the same for the game I'm presenting. Hence the IC here.

As to your question, that's not easy to answer for me right now as well. Usually I invite based on the quality of the application (writing style, deep and interesting character background and personality, etc.), but this will not really be possible for this one. Usually not that sure about a 'writing example' either, as those can be simply copy&pasted from anywhere. So, to be honest, not quite sure how to proceed if I get too many people.

DaCuseFrog:
How many people will you take in the game?

For the start I planned for some 6-10 max, creating two groups if possible and then go from there. If, over the next couple of weeks, I see that I'm able to handle another group, I'll open the game for some more players.

DaCuseFrog:

That is a great idea! Character creation in 5E takes not that long, but especially for the higher levels it will take at least a few days. Having a place other than the obvious 'OOC'-thread to talk ingame should help in keeping everyone invested and interested hopefully. Thanks!

Well, seems there is not really much interest in this kind of game. Will try a different approach then. This thread can can be closed now, thanks!
