80's inspired Cyberpunk Super Hero Game (Fate)

I am new to Fate, but I want to workshop a Superpunk type game, and get some ideas and experience for my live group. Anyone interested?

I'm interested. I like Fate but I haven't really ever run, played or see it run or played "right," usually because while it addresses some key challenges in running a game, there are a lot of other ones that can drown out the beauty of the rules.

I am pretty new to it as well, and waiting on my Fate dice to come in. I got interested in Fate, because it is an Open Genre gaming system, and the core book is free to download. Being Free makes it easier for me to talk my offline friends to get into. Being Open Genre helps me be able to switch in between stories much easier as well

In reply to Mr7oClock (msg # 3):

Yep, those are definite strengths of the system. As with any other system and genre, it all hinges on getting everyone on the same page. Fate is for people who want their characters to have to suffer on their path, and not everyone goes into gaming for that. Some people want to solve all their character's problems and avoid the tropes they see characters in shows falling for. But Fate is about embracing tropes.

I'll look into Venture City a little more over the weekend. I have plenty of my own ideas to add to the backstory though

Re: 80's inspired Cyberpunk Super Hero Game (Fate)

As a GM, I like Fate. It is the best system around for when you want to add a little definition to characters so you're not freeforming all the time. When you come up with an awesome story idea and don't know what system will work, Fate is always ready to step up. But you should never start with "I want to run a Fate game," because Fate is not a fun system in its own right. It does the minimal amount of work possible for a game system; gives you a basic, robust, heavily customizable framework and then gets out of the way. It's not D&D and if you try to run a combat heavy game then you're going to have a bad time.

Those're my two cents. I like superhero games, but I'm going to need a compelling pitch to want to play Fate.

If you want to play Fate with Supers, you might want to check out the Fate Heroes supplement. It has some interesting tweaks to the system to make characters feel a little more super. My favorite is the stunt type that lets you pay a hero point to automatically win on a certain type of roll. Hulk smash puny shield!
