IC: Tapestry of All Things

So many worlds, so much to do,

So little done, such things to be.

— Tennyson, "In Memoriam"

There are worlds beyond this world ...

Hidden places that can only be found in the pages of a rare book, or through the looking glass, or over the rainbow, or by hiding in a magnificent wardrobe.

Some of these lands are easy to find, if only someone were there to show you the way.

"Second star to the right, and straight on 'til morning."

To gain entry to some of these fantastic lands, sometimes one has only to ask ... but, of course, that does not mean that the return trip will be easy.

"Goblin King! Goblin King! Wherever you may be, take this child of mine far away from me!"

There are worlds beyond this world ... and you have been there.

Once, as a child, you undertook a grand adventure and returned home.  You survived to tell the tale, but upon your return, found that the story had already been told for you.  The threads of those heroic adventures had been woven throughout the Tapestry of All Things.  The Tapestry is the framework of creation.  The metaphysical underpinnings of reality.  Each world is but a single thread.  Your deeds have echoed, resonated and rippled across the Tapestry.

The sagas of your heroism have followed you home — and in this world they have become beloved children's tales.  Myths.  Fables.  Legends.

Only you know the truth.

Not that anyone would believe you.

There are worlds beyond this world ... and now, one by one, they are dying.

Some dark force is erasing these tales, your  tales, from existence.  Thread by thread, someone — or something — has begun unraveling the Tapestry.

Once upon a time, you Journeyed from this world and had a grand adventure.

Can you do it again?

I've always had a soft spot for portal fantasy and was thinking of getting a Fate Core game going that relied heavily on using existing stories to craft a new one.

Wikipedia does a fair job of explaining the subgenre: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...tic_in_the_narrative

Anyone game?

The seed of the idea started when I was reading through Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.  I thought it was incredibly wild that every character in the book — that is, if they received even a single  line of dialogue — was an existing character from elsewhere.  Seriously ... every character.

The idea solidified when I picked up Bill Willingham's Fables.  Great stuff.  He too only used fairy tale characters existing in the public domain to tell his tale (Snow White, Big Bad Wolf, etc).  If you are a fan of comics / graphic novels ... I cannot recommend this one enough.

The television show, Once Upon a Time, sort of hits on a lot of the same themes, but took it in a few different directions as well.

For novels (and also TV shows) Lev Grossman's The Magicians  is a huge inspiration.  Think of it as Harry Potter for grownups.  Well, that would be more accurate if this Harry Potter for grownups took a strange detour through Narnia.  And yes ... it is as cool as it sounds.

Basically ... a few of the constants that keep popping up in all of these works is that 'Stories' are somehow real.  In LoEG they exist side-by-side without reference to the works that they were part of.  But in the rest, these fables/myths/legends actually occurred elsewhere, and somehow, through some magic meta-process poorly understood by poor, non-magical us in the 'Real' world ... we somehow kept an eye on the multiverse by having these tales that occur elsewhere exist in our world as stories.

As these tales unfold, a lot of dimension-hopping is the inevitable result.  Particularly, the need to jump from land to land throughout the tale ... I love that.  Need to get to the Cloud Kingdoms?  Well, you better have a magic bean laying around.  Etc.

Re: IC: Tapestry of All Things

This sounds great! I'm not actually familiar with Fate Core, but I would be interested in learning if that's alright.
