5e D&D Rules Question concerning resistance

I've played with so many systems over the years that I forget how the rules work within different ones sometimes. Can someone remind me, does 5th edition D&D elemental resistance (fire, cold, etc.) apply to magical attacks (burning hands, ray of frost, etc.)? I think it does but I can't find the specific rule anywhere.

In reply to habsin4 (msg # 1):

Yes, it does. Elemental (Fire, cold, etc.) is treated as it's own Damage Category, per pg 78 of the 5e Basic Rules pdf.

5e D&D Rules Question concerning resistance

Wait, so since Sacred Flame is radiant damage, resistance to fire wouldn't affect that, right?

In reply to habsin4 (msg # 4):

Don't let the name fool you.

quote:
Flame-like radiance descends on a creature that you can
see within range. The target must succeed on a Dexterity
saving throw or take 1d8 radiant damage. The target
gains no benefit from cover for this saving throw.

It deals Radiant Damage, it just looks like a "flame" of light.

Also, remember DM has final discretion on these matters, so if it makes sense in your game world, go for it! Rules are just guidelines for jumping off points, imho. :)
