msh483 is a frowning tanned white man in Starfleet red with dark hair and a darker red collar on his uniform.

@Morgan: So in theory, everything in the bucket...that's hopeful. Thanks!

Re: Portrait Submission

you helped alot..i search though everything, and i saw that blank, and  when you mentioned  it and described it, i started to mess with it.

Like i said, it  may be vanity, or sentiment, but i would have hated to lose that pic   after all these years!

this may be something everyone  could try if they have problems?...

thanks again!

Re: Portrait Submission

Glad it got fixed. That's actually a relief, since it sounds now like maybe it was a browser caching issue or something.

In reply to silverelf (msg # 473):

I have no idea, those were before my time, but you're right that they're identical. I'll make a note and we'll see about replacing it, thanks!

Re: Portrait Submission

Ahoy, any updates here? Been a few months, would be nice to know if there's a gallery update on the horizon or a solid 'we don't know', kind of thing.

Re: Portrait Submission

Still waiting on some backend things.  There's a gap between what we can do and then getting everything actually posted to the site since the server move, sadly, so we don't have full control over the process.

Re: Portrait Submission

Hey, does anyone know where the list of portraits that was sent in for September of 2020 and posted up is?  I was hoping to re-use the look but I haven't had any luck finding it anywhere, and I wanted to see if I could narrow it down by checking on the month I sent it in.

(Unless it just got rejected anyway, I don't know if you get notified if that happens)

Re: Portrait Submission

Hey Warrax or Morgan,

I know you guys are still waiting for things outside of your control, but do you have any idea if - whenever an update goes through - it'll include EVERYTHING from the stuff that didn't make it into the last update (September of last year) to everything that's been submitted between then and <whatever date an update finally happens>?

I had submitted a portrait several months ago, and the game that it was for has already come and gone, rendering the submission moot (although hopefully someone else will find it useful down the road), and I find myself in the situation now of really -needing- to submit a portrait for a new game (because, as we all know, the ethnic options in the gallery don't cover all that much so it's hard to find something 'good enough'), but waffling over whether or not it's worth bothering/adding yet another portrait to the queue.

It's a decision that would be much easier to make if I knew that it would DEFINITELY get uploaded with the next update (because I'll play the odds that the next update happens sometime in the next 6-12 months, which is the general minimum lifespan I expect of a game), but if the portraits waiting to be uploaded are going to be parsed out into more than one update, and many, many, many months are passing between updates, the odds of the portrait making it in while I still need it become significantly lowered. =(

Any ideas? I know there were still leftovers sitting in the metaphorical pile back in September, and now there's presumably 8 months' worth of submissions put in between then and now (although I'm not sure how often people are sending in, at the moment) in addition to that, so I imagine there's quite a few waiting to go.

Re: Portrait Submission

The plan is to address the backlog whenever we can get this ironed out, yes. We'll see how all of that plays out, but yes, the basic notion is to get everything we've got up in one block when able.

Cool. Thanks for the reassurance! =)

Re: Portrait Submission

It's been a long time since an update has been posted about the problem with adding to the Gallery.  Do we have any idea if this part of the site will ever be working as it should.  AI is an evil thing .... LOL

Re: Portrait Submission

I am still waiting for contact with jase. Until that happens, we have no ability to update portraits because we do not have access to the site's FTP the way we used to prior to the server move.

Re: Portrait Submission

Any update on this? I've been playing around with AI generated artwork so if we can get this going I'd like to propose some ideas about how can use that.

For example:

1) Beefing up underrepresented areas (minorities, ugly portraits, underserviced categories)

2) Replacing duplicates/copyrighted works with AI generated alternatives that are functionally similar yet legally and visibly distinct

3) Resolution upscaling: taking blurry/low resolution pictures and sharpening them up.

4) Streamlining portrait submissions. If we can create a group of AI art volunteers we could create a "fast lane" of submissions that would automatically do NSFW and copyright checks and by their nature are very easy to tag properly.

Re: Portrait Submission

I...don't think swapping automated art theft* for normal "badly screenshotting Google searches" etc. theft is a soloution to anything?

Seems like it'd flood gallery slots with things folk don't specifically need, and AI "artwork", unlike actual tracing, can't be copyrighted to a user and thus fair use'd, so the site would still be liable for a computer-copied celebrity or such.

Plus if the mods were taking on volunteers, surely fixing/tagging what we've got would come first, no?

*I used to believe AI was doing more than tracing, too, but - devaluation of labour and people's hard-earned skills being bad for everyone aside - even folks in the buisness say the easiest way for an AI to fulfil a task is "copy the prompt". If you Google Image Search someone from ThisPersonDoesNotExist, for instance, you'll find an original photo close enough for Google to notice with disappointing frequency. If the artists had volunteered to contribute work it'd be OK, but these machines just monch their parasitic way across the internet...best not to train them to finesse their work, I think.

praguepride:

This is probably not going to happen.  Once the technical issues have been resolved, people will be able to submit portraits in those areas, if they need them.  Remember portraits are only supposed to be submitted by people who intend to use them.

The "underserviced" categories are that way because site users have not felt the need to submit more portraits that belong in them.

Re: Portrait Submission

I find each character details is a good place to put pics that are pertinent to that character is a good place for any pics AI or other.  It simply takes having your pics on a hosting site that gives you the hmtl link(?) that is then tweaked so the link works to produce the pic.  There are already a fee threads here in Community forum that explain how or Rmail me and I will be happy to help but not flood the Community posts here.  ;)

Re: Portrait Submission

After some deliberation, we must sadly announce that portrait submissions are indefinitely suspended until further notice. If anything changes, we will make an update to that effect, but as of right now, there will be no changes or updates to the portrait gallery.

Re: Portrait Submission

Sad day. Hopefully, things will get rolling again at some point in the future.

I realize it's possibly not something you know the answer to, but should portrait submissions at some point begin again, will the portraits that have been submitted but haven't made it through the process be put through?

Not really worried about whether they do or don't go through at this point, but more wondering if I should collect and save what I have submitted (while I remember what it is!) in the case that it needs to be submitted again if portraits become a thing again - or if I can just rest patiently and know that if portraits become a thing again, they'll go through automatically without me worrying about it.
