Illegal low ASCII character in the message!

What does the above mean?  I wrote a long post and got this message and got this error message, didn't understand what to do and lost the whole post.

Help! HEEEEELP!

Was the post composed elsewhere and then placed into the 'post message' window via copy/paste?

If so, it might be that a weird, unsupported character slipped into the post.

Following the copy/paste train-of-thought ... it might also be a weird font-related thing.

Or it could be some weirdness with whatever program the post was originally typed up in.  Most browsers have a 'paste without formatting' feature.  [A quick google search ought to show you which keystrokes to use]  It might help to do that when composing posts elsewhere that will be dropped into an RPoL message.

Clearly RPoL is just snooty enough it demands you use only High ASCII, Low ASCII is beneath these hallowed halls...

If you don't have a "paste without formatting", you can copy/paste into Notepad save as "ANSI", it will warn you that Unicode Characters will be lost (proceed as that's exactly what you want), then open it and copy/paste into the browser.  You might have to do a preview and make sure you don't have any "" to replace with proper characters.

Weird. Okay I'll bite the bullet and repost making the post very skeletal and generic. Hopefully it will make it through.

Thanks to all.

I second this; any time I have such issues, just pasting into Notepad and then redoing the copy-paste routine usually works unless I can see weird characters in Notepad. Works very well.

That's a response directly to copying "This Message was last edited by...".  This system won;t let you keep that line unmodified, just remove a few words, I usually drop the "by [username]" part and it's fine then.

There are a few ASCII characters that Notepad keeps, notably the long dash, but mostly they all work fine.  I have encountered a few that will copy across though, which is why I do the "save first, then reopen" step as that absolutely removes/replaces anything the forum won't like.

You might have tried this if you lose a post.  Hit the 'go back a page' arrow at the top and the post is usually there so can work with the great suggestions above.  I sometimes use it a lot and I use Firefox.  Not sure if that works on other browsers?  But sometimes you can retrieve a lost post and work with it. :)
